Dirtbags My Journey from a Casual Fan, to Supporter, to Devotee, to Pariah in Vaush.5’s Community Hello. My name is Pumpactionmusket, and up until two nights ago as of this recording, I was a moderator for Pigpuncher’s fan Discord server. Before I get started properly, I just thought I would tell you a bit about myself. I am a 28-year old man working part time at a library and currently focusing on studying to become a medical coder. In terms of my political beliefs, that is very much up in the air. I’m hovering around Democratic Socialist for the time being but I’m not all that big into labels, I am a Sanders supporter, though. I have been quite a fan of Breadtube WAY before they even adopted that name, but prior to that I was subscribed to atheist-centric channels whose purpose was to shit on crazy Christain evangelicals and fundamentalists and disprove Christianity, as well as indulge in the occasional political toe tipping. Pre-Gamergate, the political scene on YouTube was OVERWHELMINGLY left-wing as the right were struggling to gain even the slightest foothold there. As the anti-feminist, Anita/Zoe Quinn hysteria took hold, however, I was swept up in the current. Fortunately, I never had the slightest interest in joining message boards like 4Chan, NeoGaf or any of those ‘anti-PC’ cesspits. There was an instance on Gamespot, quite a few years back when I got irrationally angry at a review of a walking simulator game called, Gone Home.

  • The Conquest of Youtube
The Conquest of YouTube COUNTER-IDEOLOGICAL STRATEGIES IN A NEW DIGITAL LEFT NOAH SAARELA GNVM03 VT20 Genusvetenskapliga Institutionen, Lunds Universitet Handledare: Ov Cristian Norocel Abstract Over the last few years, the user-generated video-sharing online platform YouTube has been recognized by the academia as well as mainstream media as an arena for predominately right- wing political content, and radicalizing far-right extremism in particular. This thesis introduces and explores the construction of a new digital left in the left-wing phenomenon LeftTube on YouTube. Through using critical feminist discourse analysis, it examines counter-ideological strategies to alt-right beliefs on gender and sexuality in 21 videos by the four popular content creators within the community. It analyses counter-speech tactics and alternatives to far-right constructions of masculinity as well as the possibilities of left-wing politics in the online community, concluding that LeftTube can be understood as a left-wing critical knowledge project adapted to an online audience to promote leftist feminist perspectives with emancipatory goals. • Toward a New Climate Rhetoric: Appropriating Authority, Mobilising Anger and Radical Politics to Activate the Alarmed Youth
Toward a new climate rhetoric: Appropriating authority, mobilising anger and radical politics to activate the alarmed youth An exegesis submitted to Auckland University of Technology in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Communication Studies Dominic Pink 2020 ii Abstract The climate and ecological crises are the most urgent existential threats facing humanity. Creative communication approaches on this topic are required to counter the ideological constraints of mainstream news media and reticence of climate communicators. This exploratory research project aimed to develop a radical new rhetoric, imagining a youth- fronted web show–called ‘House on Fire’–targeted to young people alarmed by the crises. The aim was realised by merging popular ecological and leftist literature, appropriating the authority and legitimacy of the television news studio, and harnessing the emotional power of anger. Research-led practice was chosen to subjectively pursue this creative work, with a production phase incorporating screen-writing exercises, a pilot production to test different emotional frames, and a longer production which synthesised these frames. These productions took place in the AUT studio, utilising student volunteers as presenters and crew. Heuristic inquiry provided the framework to reflect upon the research and draw out core themes. Key findings which emerged from this, shared as stories from the production, included: the rhetorical force of anger as an emotional frame; no neutral exists in the studio space, and its conventions are inherently formal; it is possible to appropriate the studio for activist communication, however, technical constraints arise and diligent adaptations are necessary; the studio can be a space for conducting creative research.

  • Violence and Radicalization in the Internet Manosphere
We live in a society: Violence and radicalization in the Internet Manosphere Emily Price Spring 2020 Dr. Alex Otieno, Professor of Sociology Dr. Favian Martin, Professor of Criminal Justice Arcadia University, Department of Sociology, Anthropology, & Criminal Justice Bachelor of Arts in Cultural Anthropology Price 1 On March 10, 2018, a confused Reddit user posted to the forum r/OutOfTheLoop seeking answers about a meme called “We live in a society” that had been taking comedy pages and forums by storm. User ButchyBanana responded, “its (sic) an ironic meme which is an edit of an actual meme. the meme is a photo of joker from the batman series, and in impact font above him you can see ‘we live in a society where…’ and then a long rant/observation […] some guy edited the picture and left just the ‘we live in a society’ part, giving an ironic take on the ‘woke’ message, and the original meme in general.”1 Often incorporating the Joker and making tongue-in-cheek commentary about the state of the aforementioned “society,” this meme critiques the shallowness found in many internet analyses of social problems, wrapped in the aesthetics of the Joker as a character and his association with angry young men on the internet. Inevitably its reference in an academic setting will mean its downfall, but thus far it has remained a parody of baseline, lukewarm takes on societal ills, particularly those coming from teenage boys who found a sense of community in anti-feminist movements like GamerGate and, alternatively, been used both by and against men’s rights activists (MRAs) online.

tripleC 18(1): 204-218, 2020 http://www.triple-c.at YouTube as Praxis? On BreadTube and the Digital Propagation of Socialist Thought Dmitry Kuznetsov* and Milan Ismangil** Chinese University of Hong Kong, Sha Tin, Hong Kong *[email protected] **[email protected] Abstract: In this paper we discuss the rise of BreadTube and what it means for the spread and normalization of socialist ideas online. We aim to focus on four major YouTube content creators – Contrapoints, Philosophy Tube, Shaun, and Hbomberguy – to outline how they con- struct their videos to entertain, inform, as well as debunk both alt-right and (economically) lib- eral talking points, helping to prevent potential radicalization of a mostly young audience who stand at a crossroads in their ideological development. Aside from examining the content of produces by the creators, we also hope to investigate the unique configuration of their platform use, emphasizing such elements as distributions, financing, and audience interaction. Keywords: digital, BreadTube, Reddit, digital socialism, affective media, Patreon, YouTube 1. Introduction: Enter BreadTube In January 2019, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dropped by an event hosted by Harry Brewis (‘Hbomberguy’), who raised money for a transgender charity by live-streaming the videogame Donkey Kong 64 for around 50 hours. In a show of international soli- darity, Cortez’s act was the first big intersection of BreadTube with “real-world” political figures, the first major instance of it being propelled outside the confines of its digital origins. BreadTube (or ‘YouTube but good’ as referred to by its adherents) is a loose asso- ciation of independent online videographers and their surrounding communities that makes up a leftist response to alt-right use of digital media.
