These spaces are now mundane, although, if anything, the internet proves that mundanity is an illusion and that everything is shot through with magic, or whatever you want to call it. Online doesn’t feel new at all. It feels like the home version of a concept that used to be esoteric. Online is a layer of reality, a dimension of life. It doesn’t solve or replace any great mysteries, but it turns them under the light. If the spark of an individual is the part of you that decides, your self will outlast you online, as an artifact, or a program. Gamergate and Resistance to the Diversification of Gaming Culture
64 COMMENTARY: GamerGate and resistance to the diversification of gaming culture CHERIE TODD It is reported that there are now over one billion people worldwide who play multimedia video games, and the typical ‘gamer’ stereotype (mid 20s, single, white male) no longer applies (Reilly, 2015). Games are growing increasingly more pervasive as well as more social, and are now available any time on multiple platforms (PC, Xbox and PlayStation) and devices such as smart phones and iPads. Within less than a decade, video games have gone from being a niche area of entertainment for a few, to a mass medium that appeals to people of all ages and genders. Research continues to show an increase in the number of women who are now gaming, with the genders almost reaching parity. These statistics, however, tend to focus on gaming as a whole, and ignore gender splits within particular games and/or countries, where in many online games women are often a minority. As a result of this gender imbalance, the culture of games continues to be heavily influenced by highly masculinist discourse. There is an increasing diversification of gaming culture that is occurring due to the growing popularity of games. While many perceive this to be a positive step, there are some who are resistant to these fundamental shifts and who do not want the culture of games to change. Users of the hashtag #GamerGate have been the most vocal in their resistance to these changes. In 2014 reports of GamerGate activities started to circulate more widely, becoming a topical issue in the USA where news outlets began to describe the emergence of a ‘culture war’ over the diversification of gaming culture. -

In practice, it is characterized by viciously sexual and sexist attacks on women in and around gaming communities. #Gamergate is also a site for articulating “Gamergater” as a form of geek masculinity. #Gamergate discussions across social media platforms illustrate how Gamergaters produce and reproduce this gendered identity. Gamergaters perceive themselves as crusaders, under siege from critics they pejoratively refer to as SJWs (social justice warriors). By leveraging social media for concern-trolling about gaming as an innocuous masculine pastime, Gamergaters situate the heterosexual White male as both the typical gamer and the real victim of #Gamergate. #Gamergate is a specific and virulent online node in broader discussions of privilege, difference, and identity politics. Gamergaters are an instructive example of how social media operate as vectors for public discourses about gender, sexual identity, and equality, as well as safe spaces for aggressive and violent misogyny. ‘Acting like 13 year old boys?’ Exploring the discourse of online harassment and the diversity of harassers Lucy Fisher-Hackworth Submitted to the Department of Gender Studies, University of Utrecht In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Erasmus Mundus Master's Degree in Women's and Gender Studies Main supervisor: Dr.Domitilla Olivieri (University of Utrecht) Second reader: Dr. Jasmina Lukic (Central European University) Utrecht, the Netherlands 2016 Approved: _________________________________________ 1 ABSTRACT In this thesis, I have undertaken research into the users behind online harassment. The impetus behind this was to investigate taken for granted assumptions about who harassers are, what they do online, and how they do it. To begin, I highlight the discourse of online harassment of women in scholarship and online-news media, discussing the assumptions made about who is harassing and why. I discuss the lack of consideration of multi-layered harassment and argue for more research that takes into consideration the intersectionality of harassing content, and the experiences of all women online. I provide an overview of online methodologies and of feminism on the internet. I then undertake an investigation into harassers behind online harassment of women, and find trends in user profiles, user behaviour, and in online communication patterns more broadly. I discuss how researching this topic affected me personally, reflecting on the impact of viewing high amounts abusive content. My findings challenged many of the assumptions initially identified, so, with that in mind, I provide a discussion of why such assumptions are problematic. I argue that such assumptions contribute to a discourse that homogenizes harassment and harassers, and overlooks broader internet-specific behaviours. -

Davis IERES Occasional Papers, no. 2, May 15, 2019 Transnational History of the Far Right Series Transnational History of the Far Right Series A Collective Research Project led by Marlene Laruelle At a time when global political dynamics seem to be moving in favor of illiberal regimes around the world, this re- search project seeks to fill in some of the blank pages in the contemporary history of the far right, with a particular focus on the transnational dimensions of far-right movements in the broader Europe/Eurasia region. Of all European elections, the one scheduled for May 23-26, 2019, which will decide the composition of the 9th European Parliament, may be the most unpredictable, as well as the most important, in the history of the European Union. Far-right forces may gain unprecedented ground, with polls suggesting that they will win up to one-fifth of the 705 seats that will make up the European parliament after Brexit.1 The outcome of the election will have a profound impact not only on the political environment in Europe, but also on the trans- atlantic and Euro-Russian relationships. -

I found some criteria for early- warning signs of antisemitic, bigoted and genocidal activities. I included a summary of neo-Nazi and white supremacy groups in modern American and then moved to a more specific focus on contemporary and prominent groups like Atomwaffen Division, the Proud Boys, the Vinlanders Social Club, the Base, Rise Against Movement, the Hammerskins, and other prominent antisemitic and hate-driven groups. Trends of hate-speech, acts of vandalism and acts of violence within the past fifty years were examined. Also, how law enforcement and the legal system has responded to these activities has been included as well. The different methods these groups use for indoctrination of younger generations has been an important aspect of my research: the consistent use of hate-rock and how hate-groups have co-opted punk and hardcore music to further their ideology. Live-music concerts and festivals surrounding these types of bands and how hate-groups have used music as a means to fund their more violent activities have been crucial components of my research as well. The use of other forms of music and the reactions of non-hate-based artists are also included. The use of the internet, social media and other digital means has also be a primary point of discussion. -
How to Solve a Crime: Report It to the Police
HOW TO SOLVE A CRIME: REPORT IT TO THE POLICE I apparently wasn’t clear enough about the alleged assault on Steven Crowder on Tuesday to be understood by the people sent over by the right wing noise machine. So let me try to say it very simply. If Crowder was assaulted, by all means let’s prosecute the assailant. My post was intended as a warning that naive local journalists should not rely exclusively on videos from people who have a history of creating firestorms around heavily edited videos launched through Drudge to Fox. There is a long history of James O’Keefe associates just doing that. If the right wants to report events with any credibility, they’d be well served to avoid that route. A number of people–including the NYT–have exposed why Crowder’s original video was problematic. Unfortunately for Mr. Crowder, a look at the video broadcast on the Sean Hannity show appears to show quite clearly that he left out an important section of the footage when he put together his edit. A section of the Fox News broadcast preserved by the Web site Mediaite shows that Mr. Hannity’s producers at Fox News started the clip five seconds earlier than Mr. Crowder did. What the extra footage reveals is the man who punched Mr. Crowder being knocked to the ground seconds before and then getting up and taking a swing at the comedian. But aside from the obvious editing in the Crowder video–possibly hiding that the punch was not the first event in the altercation–I pointed out that Crowder didn’t report the event to any of the 350 cops who were brought in to make sure something like this didn’t happen. -
Technological Seduction and Self-Radicalization

Technological Seduction and Self-Radicalization ABSTRACT: Many scholars agree that the Internet plays a pivotal role in self- radicalization, which can lead to behaviors ranging from lone-wolf terrorism to participation in white nationalist rallies to mundane bigotry and voting for extremist candidates. However, the mechanisms by which the Internet facilitates self-radicalization are disputed; some fault the individuals who end up self- radicalized, while others lay the blame on the technology itself. In this paper, we explore the role played by technological design decisions in online self- radicalization in its myriad guises, encompassing extreme as well as more mundane forms. We begin by characterizing the phenomenon of technological seduction. Next, we distinguish between top-down seduction and bottom-up seduction. We then situate both forms of technological seduction within the theoretical model of dynamical systems theory. We conclude by articulating strategies for combating online self-radicalization. Self-Radicalization The Charleston church mass shooting, which left nine people dead, was planned and executed by white supremacist Dylann Roof. According to prosecutors, Roof did not adopt his convictions ‘through his personal associations or experiences with white supremacist groups or individuals or others’ (Berman : ). Instead, they developed through his own efforts and engagement online. The same is true of Jose Pimentel, who in began reading online Al Qaeda websites, after which he built homemade pipe bombs in an effort to target veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan (Weimann ). -

To each and every one of you, thank you. Abstract Nowadays one way of subjective evaluation of games is through game reviews. These are critical analysis, aiming to give information about the quality of the games. While the experience of playing a game is inherently personal and different for each player, current approaches to the evaluation of this experience do not take into account the individual characteristics of each player. We firmly believe game review scores should take into account the personality of the player. To verify this, we created a game review system, using multiple machine learning algorithms, to give multiple reviews for different personalities which allow us to give a more holistic perspective of a review score, based on multiple and distinct players' profiles.
