Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, March 5, 2017 Sweden is safe Since President Donald Trump called attention to violence in Sweden, we have had American journalists show up here. One, Tim Pool — funded in part by right-wing editor Paul Joseph Watson who tweeted “Any journalist claiming Sweden is safe; I will pay for travel costs & accommodation for you to stay in crime ridden migrant suburbs of Malmo” — visited Rosengård, Malmö’s toughest immigrant area. He was followed by Swedish reporters and found what was no surprise to me, an American living in Sweden: “If this is the worst Malmö can offer never come to Chicago.” Pool claimed Chicago had about 750 murders last year. All of Sweden, which has three times the population of Chicago, had 112 murders in 2015 (the last year for which statistics are available). Malmö, with a population of 330,000, had 12 murders in 2016. Madison, with a population of 243,000 had nine. So per capita, you are about as safe in Malmö as in Madison. Pool also said after a few hours in Rosengård: “For anyone worried about violence in Malmö and worried that he will be robbed or attacked in Rosengård is ‘löliga’ (ridiculous).” On TV news, he was shown walking in the community and reported it was boring and the only danger he felt was from the ice on the sidewalks. Sweden, I admit, is not a perfect society: It does have problems keeping ice off the sidewalks, and thousands are injured in falls every year. In this respect, this thesis mainly descriptively analyses three VICE documentaries covering marijuana in the setting of recreation, medicine and industry. VICE is a United States based media outlet which uses hybrid form of journalism combining conventional form of media operations and new media techniques. Normalization is a sociological concept for describing the the scale of social acceptance as a norm which was disseminated from the iii margins of the society towards mainstream scale. To implement descriptive analysis on vice.com documentaries, normalization and drug representation in the United States media has been evaluated in the socio-historical setting, and examined. As a major finding, even though vice.com documentaries represent marijuana as normal, the normative references of normalization of marijuana is not clear. In this respect, in the conclusion, the determiners and normative background of normalization of marijuana are tried to be discussed. Most history courses stop short of the present, and historians are frequently wary of applying historical analysis to our own times, before we have access to private sources and before we have the critical distance that helps us see what matters and what is ephemeral. But recent years have given many people the sense of living through historic times, and clamoring for historical context that will help them to understand the momentous changes in politics, society and culture that they observe around them. This experimental course seeks to explore the last twenty years or so from a historical point of view, using the historian’s craft to gain perspective on the present. The course will consider major developments—primarily but not exclusively in U.S. history—of the last twenty years, including 9/11 and the War on Terror, the financial crisis of 2008 and its aftermath, social movements from the Tea Party to the Movement for Black Lives, and political, cultural, and the technological changes that have been created by and shaped by these events. This course is designed to be an introduction to historical reasoning, analysis, writing, and research. -

Unlikely Identities: In May of 1911 an Ottoman deputy from Thessaloniki, Dimitar Vlahov, interjected Abu Ibrahim and the himself in a parliamentary debate about Zionism in Palestine with a question: “Are Politics of Possibility in 2 Arab peasants opposed to the Jews?” 1 Late Ottoman Palestine Answering himself, he declared that there was no enmity between Arab and Samuel Dolbee & Shay Hazkani Jewish peasants since, in his estimation, “They are brothers [onlar kardeştir], and like brothers they are trying to live.” Noting that in the past few weeks “anti- Semitism” had appeared on the pages of newspapers, he reiterated his message of familial bonds: “Whatever happens, the truth is in the open. Among Jewish, Arab, and Turkish peasants, there is nothing that will cause conflict. They are brothers.” Vlahov Efendi’s somewhat simplistic message of coexistence was not popular, appearing as it did in the midst of a charged debate about Zionist land acquisitions in Palestine.3 Other deputies in parliament pressed him about the source of his information on these apparent familial ties between peasants. He had mentioned “Arab newspapers,” but ʿAbd al-Mehdi Bey of Karbala wanted to know which ones he had consulted to support his claims. “In Jaffa there is a newspaper that appears named ‘Palestine,’” Vlahov replied. Commotion in the hall interrupted his speech at this point, but Vlahov continued, explaining how the paper suggested Hadera [Khdeira], south of Haifa, had been “nothing but wild animals” thirty years before but had recently become economically prosperous through Zionist settlement. Rishon LeZion, one of the first Zionist colonies, was another engine of development, as its tax revenue had increased a hundred- fold in the previous three decades, he claimed. -
The Armenian Genocide
The Armenian Genocide During World War I, the Ottoman Empire carried out what most international experts and historians have concluded was one of the largest genocides in the world's history, slaughtering huge portions of its minority Armenian population. In all, over 1 million Armenians were put to death. To this day, Turkey denies the genocidal intent of these mass murders. My sense is that Armenians are suffering from what I would call incomplete mourning, and they can't complete that mourning process until their tragedy, their wounds are recognized by the descendants of the people who perpetrated it. People want to know what really happened. We are fed up with all these stories-- denial stories, and propaganda, and so on. Really the new generation want to know what happened 1915. How is it possible for a massacre of such epic proportions to take place? Why did it happen? And why has it remained one of the greatest untold stories of the 20th century? There are between six and seven million alive today, and less than half live in the Republic of Armenia, a small country south of Georgia and north of Iran. The rest live around the world in countries such as the US, Russia, France, Lebanon, and Syria. They're an ancient people who originally came from Anatolia some 2,500 years ago. -

Developing suitable empirical approaches to render them accountable and to study their social power has become a prominent scholarly concern. This article proposes an approach to examine what an algorithm does, not only to move closer to understanding how it works, but also to investigate broader forms of agency involved. To do this, we examine YouTube’s search results ranking over time in the context of seven sociocultural issues. Through a combination of rank visualizations, computational change metrics and qualitative analysis, we study search ranking as the distributed accomplishment of ‘ranking cultures’. First, we identify three forms of ordering over time – stable, ‘newsy’ and mixed rank morphologies. Second, we observe that rankings cannot be easily linked back to popularity metrics, which highlights the role of platform features such as channel subscriptions in processes of visibility distribution. Third, we find that the contents appearing in the top 20 results are heavily influenced by both issue and platform vernaculars. YouTube-native content, which often thrives on controversy and dissent, systematically beats out mainstream actors in terms of exposure. -

Abstract: This study is a contribution to the limited knowledge of how different types of media content (about Muslims and extremism) posted and shared on Facebook might influence corresponding user comments. Through analyzing the discourse of user comments this study aims to identify how comments might reflect certain characteristics of Islamophobia, and to which themes in Facebook posts commentators relate to the most. The linguistic analysis is guided by the use of critical discourse analysis. For the purpose of this study, three different types of articles/video and the corresponding comments are analyzed. Two of the articles/video that I will analyze are from unreliable media sources, and one of the articles is from a credible media source. The linguistic analysis showed that the majority of commentators expressed that they believe the claims made in the articles/video about Muslims and extremism are true.
