Johanna Leinonen and Auvo Kostiainen This volume is based on a selection of papers presented at Johanna Leinonen and Auvo Kostiainen (Eds.) the conference FinnForum XI: Transnational Finnish Mobili- ties, held in Turku, Finland, in 2016. The twelve chapters dis- cuss two key issues of our time, mobility and transnational- ism, from the perspective of Finnish migration. The volume is divided into four sections. Part I, Mobile Pasts, Finland and Beyond, brings forth how Finland’s past – often imagined TRANSNATIONAL as more sedentary than today’s mobile world – was molded by various short and long-distance mobilities that occurred FINNISH MOBILITIES: both voluntarily and involuntarily. In Part II, Transnational Influences across the Atlantic, the focus is on sociocultural PROCEEDINGS OF transnationalism of Finnish migrants in the early 20th cen- tury United States. Taken together, Parts I and II show how FINNFORUM XI mobility and transnationalism are not unique features of our FINNISH MOBILITIES TRANSNATIONAL time, as scholars tend to portray them. Even before modern communication technologies and modes of transportation, migrants moved back and forth and nurtured transnational ties in various ways. Part III, Making of Contemporary Finn- ish America, examines how Finnishness is understood and maintained in North America today, focusing on the con- cepts of symbolic ethnicity and virtual villages. Part IV, Con- temporary Finnish Mobilities, centers on Finns’ present-day emigration patterns, repatriation experiences, and citizen- ship practices, illustrating how, globally speaking, Finns are privileged in their ability to be mobile and exercise transna- tionalism. Not only is the ability to move spread very uneven- ly, so is the capability to upkeep transnational connections, be they sociocultural, economic, political, or purely symbol- ic. -

E-mail: [email protected] Finnish botanists actively studied the flora of Karelia (Karelian Republic) and the Kola Peninsula (Murmansk Region) when Finland was a Grand Duchy of Russia in 1809–1918. J. Fellman’s ex- peditions in 1829 were the first notable botanical expeditions to the area. Geologically and floristi- cally the area was similar to Finland, and exploring the area was considered to be a national duty for Finnish biologists. Almost 40 Finnish scientists who travelled on the Kola Peninsula collected significant amounts of herbarium specimens from there. The specimens are mostly in H, but du- plicates were distributed widely. The collectors include M. Aschan, W. M. Axelson (Linnaniemi), V. Borg (Kivilinna), M. Brenner, V. F. Brotherus, R. Envald, J. Fellman, N. I. Fellman, C. W. Fontell, E. af Hällström, H. Hollmén, P. A. Karsten, A. Osw. Kihlman (Kairamo), F. W. Klingstedt, H. Lindberg, J. Lindén, A. J. Malmberg (Mela), J. Montell, F. Nylander, J. A. Palmén, V. Pesola, P. A. Rantaniemi, J. Sahlberg, and G. Selin. A short description is given of the biographies of the most important collectors with notes on their itineraries. Details of the collections from the Kola Peninsula are mostly taken from the vascular-plant specimens kept in the Finnish main herbaria and entered in the Floristic database Kastikka of the Finnish Museum of Natural History. -

However, much of the existing distributional data are scattered throughout a multitude of sources (including in different languages), such as taxonomic publications, checklists and natural history collections and often, bringing them together is difficult. Development of the digital storage facilities may prevent loss of important data (Ruchin et al. 2020). Project GBIF is a good example of a successful data storage facility, which allows investigators to publish biodiversity data in one safe place in one uniform format. -

The Calotte Academy 2008 Final Report by Lassi Heininen, Heather Nicol and Urban Wråkberg The Calotte Academy 2008 took place in May 22-26, 2008 in Inari, Finland, in Kirkenes Norway and in Murmansk, Russia. The main theme of the 2008 Calotte Academy was Climate Change Defining Human Security The integrated sub-themes, which were discussed in the public sessions, were: “Climate change as a new discipline for disciplining?”, “Climate change and livelihoods”, “Climate change and indigenous peoples”, “Climate change, oil drilling and transportation”, “Climate change and alternative energy” and “Climate change, sovereignty and international law”. The main goals of the 2008 Academy were as follows: First, to highlight and disseminate general scientific information and knowledge about impacts of climate change, and to open discussion on human responses to climate change. The second goal was define what might be considered as the influences of climate change on human security, to ask what is meant by human security in light of climate change; and to encourage both academic discourse and political discussion on relations between these two phenomena. The third goal was to promote the interplay between science and politics by having a policy-oriented discussion and dialogue on climate change, human security and their inter-relations,(in areas such as such as legislation, community planning, livelihoods and human health ,and between groups such as policy-makers, academics, civil activists and business leaders.) The fourth and final goal was to have the Academy serve as a platform for open discussion on relevant Northern issues in general and especially dealing with the NRF Open Assemblies. -

Several major problems are related to the military sources, albeit those of a civil origin definitely also need consideration. ARE THERE REASONS TO BE CONCERNED ? This is a theme in focus of a recent study, in which the authors to this book participated at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Laxenburg, Austria. -

Introduction In Finland, there are two rivers discharging into the Barents Sea, northern Atlantic Ocean, that support populations of Atlantic salmon, the rivers Teno (Tana in Norwegian) and Näätämöjoki (Neidenelva in Norwegian). Both of them are border rivers between Finland and Norway. Therefore, the management of the rivers and their salmon stocks is based on bilateral agreements between the governments of the two countries. Some reference is also made here to the potential salmon production in the River Tuloma system, which has its western headwaters in Finland and drains through north-western Russian Kola Peninsula into the Kola fjord, Barents Sea. 2. Aim The governments of Finland and Norway, in their common agreement (1989), aim at maintain and enhance the anadromous salmonid stocks in the Teno river system through feasible fishery regulations. The aim of the agreement and the management measures is to conserve and maintain the anadromous salmonid stocks in a way that ensures the conservation of their biodiversity and natural production. Corresponding aims are reflected in the bilateral agreement about fishery management in the River Näätämöjoki. 3. The resource The River Teno system (70ºN, 28ºE) has a catchment area of 16 386 km² one-third of it being located in Finland. The river runs into the Barents Sea through Tanafjord. The main stem of the River Teno, and one of the three main headwater rivers, the River Inarijoki, form the border between northernmost Finland and Norway (Fig.
