BULLFIGHTING STEP BY STEP Granada is a destination which will change your life. The old Garnata of Jewish opens to the tourist like an open- air museum plenty of master pieces. The Alhambra and Generalife Gardens, known in the whole world, are just two examples of its huge touristic and cultural atractive, Granada is much more. Open your senses and feel it in all its essence. In the heart of this literary, poetic, artistic, cultural and millenial city, is located the Plaza de Toros de Granada (the Granada’s Bullring), a neomudejar jewel which has been hidden until now, offer you a complete experience for understanding the soul of Granada. A bullfight is an event in which a bullfighter on foot or on horseback challenges a numbers of bulls (one each time) in a enclosed area built for this purpose; it’s Corrida de Toros. La Corrida is performed by a TORERO (bullfighter) called bullring or arena who is on foot. All the bullfighters are TOREROS but not all the toreros are “Matador de Toros” or “Diestro”. Matador is a category acquired in a ceremony Bullfighting may be divided into three different kinds, depending on the Torero’s experience, the size of the bull and the use of horses : called “Alternativa”. From this moment onwards he can fight with the red cape and the sword. Each Matador has his own team called cuadrilla which includes 6 members: 2 lancers, 3 flagmen and 1 sword servant. Not all the bulls can fight in this kind of corrida, they must weigh at least 460 kg and be 4 years old (the bull fight regulation allows bulls between 4 and 6 years old). -

Comparative Translations of Bullfighting Terms Used by R. Ford, J. Hay, A
FACULTAD de FILOSOFÍA Y LETRAS DEPARTAMENTO de FILOLOGÍA INGLESA Grado en Estudios Ingleses TRABAJO DE FIN DE GRADO COMPARATIVE TRANSLATIONS OF BULLFIGHTING TERMS USED BY R. FORD, J. HAY, A. HUNTINGTON AND E. HEMINGWAY José Manuel Toquero Martín [Vº Bº del tutor y fecha] TUTORES: Dr. José Manuel Barrio Marco Dr. Belén López Arroyo 2015-2016 Abstract The present paper is a comparative analysis of translations of bullfighting terms from works belonging to four different authors who travelled to Spain and wrote about this spectacle as reporters. The purpose of this study is to obtain a glossary of terms belonging to the field and to see how those terms are translated nowadays. The following pages illustrate examples from which we have taken all the terms. Moreover, there is an explanation of the usage made by each author. We have taken as a reference the works of Richard Ford, John Hay, Archer Huntington, and Ernest Hemingway to see the differences among translations by quoting the context in which the words have been used. We will see that depending on the period, the translations of the words vary though they are mostly borrowings from Spanish that the authors used. -

FULL REPORT - BULLFIGHTS IN SPAIN AN INTERNATIONAL INVESTIGATION BY IN COLLABORATION WITH S.B. (Investigation Unit Coordinator – LAV) With the exclusive veterinary contributions of José Enrique Zaldívar (President – AVATMA, Association of Veterinary Abolitionists of Bullfighting and Animal Abuse) Under coordination and review of Marta Esteban Miñano (International Managing Director – Animal Guardians) BULLFIGHTING IN ALGEMESÍ (VALENCIA) Period: from 22/09/2019 to 24/09/2019 Places: Bullring of Algemesí / Butcher shop in Algemesí / Center of Algemesí / Object of the investigation: collection of videos of the process of the bullfights starting in the breeding, followed by the transport, the act in the bullring and the process of converting the body in a meat product. In the Algemesí’s images (as well as in the ones concerning Seville and Madrid) we can see the three standard thirds (tran. phases) of the bullfight: the Tercio de Varas (tran. Third of Rods), with passes with the cape and confrontation with the horse of the picador (bullfighter on horse), the Tercio de Banderillas (tran. Third of Flags) and the Tercio de Muerte (tran. Third of Death), which includes the Faena de Muleta (cape task used by the bullfighter to tease the bull with a cape), and the process by which, with the use of various weapons (estoque, descabello and puntilla, explained below), the life of these animals is ended in the bullrings. Before going out to the ring, in the pens, a divisa (coloured ribbon), which is a double harpoon measuring 9 cm, is nailed to the bull’s neck. It is adorned with coloured ribbons which identify the ranch to which the animal belongs. -

It was everything I had learned about Spain for eighteen years’” (qtd. in Josephs 238). To the reader who is unfamiliar with Spanish culture, For Whom the Bell Tolls may indeed seem to be just another epic love story during a time of war; however, as Hemingway concedes himself, the novel contains much more than romance and violence. -
