PREFACE “Pensamiento renovador es siempre minoritario.” —Joaquín Araujo EACH TIME I am carried away with enthusiasm, thinking that I am writing a book on a significant change that is taking place in Spanish contemporary culture, I remember my conversation with Jorge Riechmann, one of the most important intellectual leaders of this change. When I asked him about the cultural significance of the transformation, he looked at me seriously and said that change is affecting less than one percent of society, though that one percent think that they are the ninety-nine percent. In his opinion, a new understanding of the world that comes together with the awareness of the need to change happens only in microworlds of new social movements narcissistically constructed around their own websites, whose links to other microworlds are not frequently used.

    BULLS AND BULLFIGHTING IN LITERATURE IN ENGLISH FROM 1920-36: O'BRIEN'S MARY LAVELLE AND HEMINGWAY'S FIESTA Carmen Rueda Ramos This work deals with the symbolism two foreign wnters, who came to Spain looking for some kind of liberation,saw in bulljighting.Both of them wereparlicularly interested in thefígure of the bu11 as a victim of a tragedy. That is what made Kate O'Brien and Ernest Hemingway portray their rnain characters in Mary Lavelle and in Fiesta as symbolic bulls in their dramas of passion. The eroticism involved in bulljighting also has its equivalent in the dramasof both novels. In trying &oget to know Spain as "la piel de toro", they made their characters take part in this peculiar and characteristic ritual. Laín Entraigo, an important contempomy essayist on bullfighting, once de- scribed it by saying that "En su esencia el toreo es un encuentro entre el hombre y el toro bajo forma de lidia, en el cual hay desafio, juego, ostentación del poderío humano y muerte real (la del toro) y muerte posible (la del torero); por tanto drama." ' Entralgo explained in a few words what bullfighting is al1 about. However, the symbolism that lies behind it -represented by courage and strength- is exactly what foreign writers, who came to Spain before the Civil War, saw in it and wrote about. In trying to understand the country, its baditions and inconsistencies, its cruelties and beauties, they wrote about something typically Spanish, "la fiesta nacional", and gave different interpretations to it in their novels in connection with drama and passion.

I argue for zero parental compromise, rejecting a rights-oriented approach, and propose a policy that an ethical vegan parent and a non-vegan co-parent should follow to determine how to raise their children.

    SOCIAL THOUGHT & COMMENTARY Torophies and Torphobes: The Politics of Bulls and Bullfights in Contemporary Spain Stanley Brandes University of California, Berkeley Abstract Although the bullfight as a public spectacle extends throughout southwestern Europe and much of Latin America, it attains greatest political, cultural, and symbolic salience in Spain. Yet within Spain today, the bullfight has come under serious attack, from at least three sources: (1) Catalan nationalists, (2) Spaniards who identify with the new Europe, and (3) increasingly vocal animal rights advocates. This article explores the current debate—cultural, political, and ethical—on bulls and bullfighting within the Spanish state, and explores the sources of recent controversy on this issue. It is in Spain alone, however, that this custom has attained notable polit- ical, cultural, and symbolic salience. For many Spaniards, the bull is a quasi-sacred creature (Pérez Álvarez 2004), the bullfight a display of exceptional artistry. Tourists consider bullfights virtually synonymous with Spain and flock to these events as a source of exotic entertainment. My impression, in fact, is that bullfighting is even more closely associated with Spanish national identity than baseball is to that of the United States. Garry Marvin puts the matter well when he writes that the cultur- al significance of the bullfight is “suggested by its general popular image as something quintessentially Spanish, by the considerable attention paid to it within Spain, and because of its status as an elaborate and spectacu- lar ritual drama which is staged as an essential part of many important celebrations” (Marvin 1988:xv).
