BULLS AND BULLFIGHTING IN LITERATURE IN ENGLISH FROM 1920-36: O'BRIEN'S MARY LAVELLE AND HEMINGWAY'S FIESTA Carmen Rueda Ramos This work deals with the symbolism two foreign wnters, who came to Spain looking for some kind of liberation,saw in bulljighting.Both of them wereparlicularly interested in thefígure of the bu11 as a victim of a tragedy. That is what made Kate O'Brien and Ernest Hemingway portray their rnain characters in Mary Lavelle and in Fiesta as symbolic bulls in their dramas of passion. The eroticism involved in bulljighting also has its equivalent in the dramasof both novels. In trying &oget to know Spain as "la piel de toro", they made their characters take part in this peculiar and characteristic ritual. Laín Entraigo, an important contempomy essayist on bullfighting, once de- scribed it by saying that "En su esencia el toreo es un encuentro entre el hombre y el toro bajo forma de lidia, en el cual hay desafio, juego, ostentación del poderío humano y muerte real (la del toro) y muerte posible (la del torero); por tanto drama." ' Entralgo explained in a few words what bullfighting is al1 about. However, the symbolism that lies behind it -represented by courage and strength- is exactly what foreign writers, who came to Spain before the Civil War, saw in it and wrote about. In trying to understand the country, its baditions and inconsistencies, its cruelties and beauties, they wrote about something typically Spanish, "la fiesta nacional", and gave different interpretations to it in their novels in connection with drama and passion. -

Jesse R. Ramirez, 26, of 5031 Reading Ave., is in Lake County Jail without bond. He was charged with two counts of murder in the shooting deaths of Jose "Joey" Escobedo Jr., 28, and Quinton Griffith, 20, outside the former Brothers Two tavern early Sept. 6, 2002. Charges were filed Jan. 11, but the affidavits were sealed to avoid alerting Ramirez, who has lived in several parts of the country since the shootings of the Hammond men near the corner of Kennedy Avenue and 165th Street in Hammond. "It was a real regional effort," said Detective Sgt. Wendy Jo Gardner. "The suspect has family in several states and Mexico." Police in Louisiana -- where Ramirez was recently working -- and Texas, Tennessee, Chicago and the U.S. Border Patrol were all looking for him, said Sgt. A. Llanes, Gardner's partner. With Capt. Michael Solan, the pair has worked on the case since February 2004. -

Frank and Shelley Lowenberg Department of Spanish and Portuguese University of Iowa In the first paper of this three-part presentation entitled "Research on the Role of Women in French Basque Culture," we shall limit ourselves to describing the role of the Basque woman as it was portrayed by the law codes of the three Basque provinces of Labourd, Basse-Navarre and Soule.1 Although we shall be utilizing the French text of these codes in this presentation, in all cases where the original Bearnaise texts were available, the French translations were checked for accuracy against the originals. -

México Interdisciplinario/Interdisciplinary Mexico I, 2, verano/summer 2012 La Misma Luna: Comments on the Mexican-US American Migration Debate Dr. Petra Vogler (Intercultural Education and Management, Germany) Patricia Riggen, the producer and director of La Misma Luna (2009) draws our attention to a human tragedy that is often ignored: Women are now crossing the border. It used to be men. Now, there are 4 million women in this country who have left a child behind. When people ask me if this is a true story, I tell them that it is based on 4 million true stories. These women have no other options and make the most difficult sacrifice of all because no mother would leave her child unless she was desperate. That was something I wanted to explore. Rosario has a huge dilemma having made this decision in order to provide for her child because she loves him, while at the same time feeling like she's sacrificing that love. It's not just a statistic to me. These are human beings and that's what I wanted to show. (in: Women and Hollywood 2008) Riggen’s drama explores the migration of nine year old “Carlitos” (Adrián Alonso) and his mother Rosario (Kate del Castillo) to the United States. The mother-son-relationship exempli- fies the potential tragedy of many young Mexican women who have already migrated to the US in search for a better life while leaving their children back home. In this case, single mother Rosario has worked as a housekeeper and babysitter in Los Angeles for more than four years and her dream is to obtain American citizenship, which would allow her to bring Carlitos to the U.S.
