The author declares that he/she has observed the ethical standards required in terms of the University of Pretoria’s Code of ethics for researchers and the Policy guidelines for responsible research. 2 Summary The dissertation considers marriage ceremonial rituals within Christianity, Judaism and Islam. The phenomenological method was used for obtaining and comparing the information on these religious rituals. The dissertation did not make use of field study to obtain the research. Rituals are a part of the living narrative of the people and involves integrating all walks of life religious, civil, cultural and personal. Within each religion the pre-marriage, marriage, post-marriage rituals and important elements were discussed at length. It should be noted that there will be traditions that differ from this work as some will fall outside the scope of this dissertation. At first glance the marriage rituals will seem very different from one another, until specific elements are compared. The vast phenomena that are similar (not exactly the same) were very surprising even though they do prove the research hypothesis to be correct. Rituals are important to those who partake in them.

Rael Of all the ceremonies that take place during the typical New Mexican Spanish wedding, the entrega 1 de novios pueta 2 ( poeta ), as he is often called, begins to sing to the accompaniment of a violin and a guitar. The name entrega de novios refers both to the ceremony itself as well as to the series of coplas padrinos entrega de novios tells. 1 New Mexicans invariably use the archaic form entriega instead of the modern literary one. 2 The name pueta is usually given to one who improvises coplas as he sings. 56 The poetic form used in the entrega is the copla, which is generally a quatrain with eight-syllable lines, though now and then one also finds sixains. The quatrains have assonance in the second and fourth lines while the sixains have it in the second, fourth and sixth lines. Occasionally some of the coplas have a different rhyme scheme, but this is rare. The number of stanzas in each entrega is not definite. In the entregas which I encountered, the number of stanzas varies from fourteen to forty-five. The entrega given below is by far the most popular one. There are numerous versions of it available, but only seven of them have been included here.     CEREMONIES WITHIN YOUR CEREMONY Unity Candle Candles will always be popular and, especially because of one idea we’ll discuss with you, we think a Unity Candle is worth considering as you plan your wedding. Candles may not work well in outdoor venues but, even then, we can suggest ways of including them. The Unity Candle symbolizes lives being united in marriage. It is a large candle lit by the Bride and Groom, sometimes by the bridal couple along with their children, indicating that all are now an inseparable part of one another. It also says to in-laws and friends that they, too, have been brought into this joyous whole. Sometimes the smaller tapers used to light the larger Unity Candle are blown out afterwards, sometimes they remain lit because individuality remains even within unity. Your officiant will describe to your guests the meaning of this ceremony and sometimes pronounce a blessing upon the newly formed family. The Bride and Groom typically are not expected to say anything (though they may whisper sentiments to one another). Sometimes mothers or other loved ones are given an opportunity to speak. Sometimes a soloist will sing, or music will be played, or a reading will take place. Sometimes candle sponsors (often Godparents) will stand with the bridal couple. Sometimes spiritual or religious connotations are involved. We will tailor the Unity Candle ceremony to fit what you want to remember. Many treasured thoughts may be symbolized in the lighting of the individual tapers and the Unity Candle. Your choices will determine who lights these candles and how this may be used to honor loved ones or give pledges to your children.
