Day 1 - Thursday, July 5: San Sebastian, Pamplona, Olite Our tour group meets at 9:00 AM in San Sebastian and we go for a quick walking tour of the city. We then travel to Pamplona where we have lunch at a historic restaurant followed by a guided walking tour around town. We will get an idea of the various meeting points and activities as we walk around the main areas of the town. Our group leader will give other important information about what to expect and other aspects of safety during the stay in Pamplona. Dinner will be served at a traditional restaurant in Pamplona followed by a transfer to the Olite Parador for overnight. Watch from a close by balcony as the "Txupinazo" is launched to mark the opening ceremonies for San Fermin in Pamplona. We have reserved VIP balconies in the heart of town to view the launch of San Fermin festival. There are a lot of activities throughout the day that will keep you busy. You can choose to participate in optional activities or explore the town on your own. Lunch will be served at a traditional restaurant in Pamplona. In the evening, guests will have the option to watch a bull fight in the famous bullring of Pamplona. For the guests not interested in the bull fight, our guides will recommend many other local activities to take part in during San Fermin. Following a full day of festivities, we will transfer to the Olite Parador for a delicious group dinner and overnight. We get to watch the thrill seekers run along side Spanish bulls through the narrow streets of Pamplona from a low level balcony. We leave the city of Pamplona and travel to La Rioja region. Here we will have lunch and a vineyard tour with wine tasting. Later in the afternoon we will travel to Bilbao where we get a welcome on board the El Transcantabrico Gran Lujo - the most luxurious modern train in Europe as we continue our luxury journey for Santiago de Compostela. Dinner is on board the train. Train trip to Villasana de Mena while enjoying our first dinner onboard. Overnight in Villasana de Mena. Depart the train for a city tour of the old quarter and a visit to the famous Guggenheim Museum, a modern architectural marvel designed by Frank Gehry. Return to the train to continue our journey to Santander while having lunch onboard. City sightseeing tour of the elegant capital of Cantabria and free time. Those who wish may visit El Gran Casino after dinner (entrance included). Overnight in Santander. Guggenhiem Museum, Bilbao Tour the lovely Bilbao Welcome to the gorgeous Santander Day 5 - Monday, July 9: Unquera, Potes, Comillas, Cabezon de la Sal Train trip to Unquera station from where we will travel by coach through the gorge of La Hermida and reach the town of Potes. After visiting this charming village, enjoy a spa circuit at La Hermida Spa. Return to the train after lunch and trip to Cabezón de la Sal. In the afternoon there will be free time and you may choose to visit the mansion of El Capricho in the town of Comillas, the impressive and colourful 19th century house designed by Antonio Gaudí. Next we will be taken on a tour of Altamira Neocave, the finest realistic example of Upper Palaeolithic cave art. After lunch we will return to the train and travel into Asturian territory, visiting the village of Ribadesella and its charming promenade and stunning historic mansions. Dinner and overnight in Arriondas. First enroute is Lake Enol, then visit the sacred place of Shrine of Covadonga to hear its legends. Back onboard for lunch and trip to the region’s capital, Oviedo, the highlight of Asturian Romanesque art, featuring gems such as the basilica of San Julian de los Prados. City tour and free time. After visiting both towns, return to the El Transcantábrico to continue our coastal journey to Luarca, visiting this charming seaside town embedded in a stunning landscape. Dinner and overnight in Luarca. Rain doesn't get in the way of Start the day off with exploration sightseeing of Avilés Day 9 - Friday, July 13: Ribadeo, Viveiro Train trip to the historic town of Ribadeo, in Galician lands, bordering Asturias. Our coach will take us to the Las Catedrales Beach, one of the most spectacular beaches in the world. City sightseeing in Ribadeo and free time. Back on the train for lunch and trip to Viveiro, with city tour and free time. MONTE CORONA FOREST The Monte Corona is a big mountain area located in the west coast of Cantabria, not far from the beaches of Comillas and Oyambre. Monte Corona is made up of several public forests (n=10) with a long tradition of forest planning in Cantabria. Brief history The Monte Corona forests were extensively deforested until the 18 th century due to the demand for wood for shipbuilding. Since then, the southern blue gum ( Eucalyptus globulus ) and the Monterrey pine ( Pinus radiata ) have changed the monte’s history. In 1859, this group of forests was one of the first to be declared of public interest in Cantabria. Planning of its forest resources, due to its productive capacity, was authorised by forest engineer Luis Calderón Punte in 1892. Natural status These forests are located on the Cantabrian seaboard, with few slopes and altitude of 0- 450 masl. The climate is humid Atlantic, with mild temperatures (14 ºC annual average) and moderate rainfall (1400 mm/year). Monte Corona is located at the medium coline belt, with no summer draughts and no likelihood of frost. The soil is mainly rendzina, lithosol and cambisol, with less presence of regosol and luvisol. Socio-economics Monte Corona forests cover part of five municipal districts (Cabezón de la Sal, Comillas, Ruiloba, Udías and Valdáliga), with a population of around 12,000 inhabitants.
