Operation Golden Gate to Connect Sangin, Musa Qal'ah Tanks Disrupt
NEWS Operation Golden Gate to connect Sangin, Musa Qal'ah Story and photos by Cpl. Anthony Ward Jr. SANGIN DISTRICT, Afghanistan – Ground was broken for the start of Operation Golden Gate in the Sangin District of Helmand province, Afghanistan, Nov. 4. Marines, sailors and soldiers are working together in an effort to build a bridge more than 24 feet wide that will span more than 150 feet across the Helmand River, allowing for easy passage for the local people. “This is a joint project to build a permanent bridging solution to connect the east and west banks of the river, “said 2nd Lt. Benjamin Nelson, mission commander for Engineer Company, Combat Logistics Battalion 2, Combat Logistics Regiment 15. The current bridge site is near the northern causeway, which once housed a bridge that connected the people of Sangin and Musa Qal’ah. “The northern causeway was the site of an existing medium girder bridge,” said Lt. j.g. James A. Bruno, platoon commander with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 133. “Over time, the river expanded west, making it no longer feasible to have the bridge there.” (Read the STORY) Tanks disrupt enemy activity in known insurgent hotbed Story and photos by Cpl. Mark Garcia COMBAT OUTPOST SHIR GHAZAY, Afghanistan – During a time when insurgents typically bed down for the winter, Marines and coalition forces engaged multiple enemy forces during Operation Helmand Viper, Oct. 19 through 27. Tanks with Bravo Company, 2nd Tank Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 7, led the support mission for special operations forces. The operation’s focus was to find and destroy weapons caches, improvised explosive devices and drug producing facilities. -
The United States and Other Donor Countries Have Reportedly Invested $4 Billion in Afghan Roads
June 6, 2014 Mr. William Hammink USAID Mission Director for Afghanistan Dear Director Hammink: The United States and other donor countries have reportedly invested $4 billion in Afghan roads. As you know, the United States provided a significant proportion of those funds. USAID alone invested over a billion dollars in road projects in addition to hundreds of millions of dollars provided by the Department of Defense (DOD). Following conversations that I had during my trip to Afghanistan last fall, I’m concerned that the U.S. government may be supporting road projects in Afghanistan that will be unsustainable due to not being properly maintained. In Kabul, a senior U.S. government official expressed his misgivings to me regarding the efficacy of U.S. and Afghan road maintenance efforts and stated that he believed maintenance problems pose a major challenge to the sustainability of Afghanistan’s transportation network. A recent report in the Washington Post stated that Highway 1, a critical piece of Afghanistan’s transport infrastructure, is nearly impassible at certain points due to damage caused by insurgent activity, coupled with a lack of road maintenance by the Afghan government.1 It’s reported that this road was built by U.S. and coalition partners at a cost of approximately $3 billion. The Washington Post article stated that USAID ceased funding Afghan government road maintenance programs in 2012, when the agency determined that Afghan government’s road maintenance efforts were inadequate. I am concerned that roads built at great risk and expense by the U.S. and other donors are not and will not be properly maintained. -

FUNDING In Kandahar, fighting continued mainly in Arghandab, Zheray and Panjwayi 1.28B districts. Fifth progress report on the implementation of the common set of proposals endorsed by EU and NATO Councils on 6 December 2016 and 5 December 2017 16 June 2020 On 6 December 2016 and on 5 December 2017, EU and NATO Councils endorsed, in parallel processes, a common set of 74 proposals for the implementation of the Joint Declaration signed in Warsaw on 8 July 2016 by the President of the European Council, the President of the European Commission and the Secretary General of NATO. Responding to the taskings by the Ministers of both organizations, regular progress reports on implementation were submitted to the respective Councils in June and December 2017, in June 2018, as well as in June 2019. The present, fifth, report covers the period between June 2019 and June 2020. It elaborates on progress achieved in the implementation of the 74 common proposals by showcasing tangible deliverables in all areas of cooperation. In particular, the following elements can be highlighted: - Political dialogue has further intensified at all levels and settings, including in virtual formats, while maintaining the positive trend of mutual and reciprocal cross-briefings. It remains an essential and indispensable instrument for strengthening mutual understanding, building confidence and ensuring reciprocal transparency vis-à-vis the NATO Allies and the EU Member States, as well as their strong engagement. - The Structured Dialogue on military mobility at staff level continues to contribute to information sharing in the key areas of military requirements, transport infrastructure, transport of dangerous goods, customs and cross border movement permissions. - In the area of strategic communications, cooperation focused on strengthening mutual alerting on disinformation incidents and hostile information activities, as well as improving capacities related to detection, analysis and exposure to disinformation. -

A Country of Origin Information - Content Management System (COI-CMS) entry is a COI product drawn up in conformity with COI standards to satisfy the requirements of immigration and asylum procedures (regional directorates, initial reception centres, Federal Administrative Court) based on research of existing, credible and primarily publicly accessible information. The content of the COI-CMS provides a general view of the situation with respect to relevant facts in countries of origin or in EU Member States, independent of any given individual case. The content of the COI-CMS includes working translations of foreign-language sources. The content of the COI-CMS is intended for use by the target audience in the institutions tasked with asylum and immigration matters. Section 5, para 5, last sentence of the Act on the Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum (BFA-G) applies to them, i.e. it is as such not part of the country of origin information accessible to the general public.
