NASSO MCAS CHERRY POINT Gays and lesbians may openly serve in the military, due to the recent repeal of Title 10 of the U.S. Code, Section 654, more commonly known as the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law. The DADT law, established in 1993, allowed gays to serve as long as they kept their sexual orientation private. The repeal, enacted through a congressional bill in December, went into effect Tuesday, after the DOD certifi ed that current military members have been trained to adjust to the new policy. President Barack Obama certifi ed to Congress on July 22 that the U.S. Armed Forces have “prepared the necessary policies and regulations” to effectuate repeal and that implementation of these policies and regulations is consistent with the standards of military readiness, military effectiveness, unit cohesion, and recruiting and retention of the Armed Forces. This is what America is made of,” said Toolan, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., during his remarks. “It’s not people who are going to cower because they are afraid. America is made up of millions of raw boned, fi re-breathing freedom fi ghters. “As President Bush, on the evening of the attack, said: ‘Today our fellow citizens, our way of life, our freedom came under attack. Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they can’t touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they can’t dent the steel of American resolve.
