PFC Levski v Chelsea FC MATCH PRESS KIT Vassil Levski National Stadium, Sofia Wednesday, 27 September 2006 - 20:45CET Group A - Matchday 2

There was no concession to PFC Levski Sofia's unfamiliarity with UEFA Champions League football in a fixture schedule which gave the Bulgarian champions a debut appearance away to reigning champions FC Barcelona. A 5-0 defeat proved the most painful of introductions and it gets little easier with Chelsea FC their opponents on Matchday 2.

• Stanimir Stoilov's side were undone by two first-half goals in Spain and Barça went on to emphasise their superiority with three more after the break - all five goals coming from different scorers. Levski's supporters will be praying that lessons were quickly learned as Chelsea's superstars arrive threatening to inflict similar damage.

Bad omens • Three previous home games against English opposition in UEFA club competition all resulted in aggregate defeat for the Sofia outfit and their only positive result in six individual matches came in the second round of the 1983/84 UEFA Cup with a 1-1 draw at Watford FC. They lost 3-1 in the return, the first of three home defeats in the UEFA Cup. Liverpool FC triumphed 4-2 in 2003/04, two years after Levski lost 2-0 to Chelsea.

• John Terry scored the opener that day, while Frank Lampard was on target in the 3-0 first-leg victory. The pair are the only players still remaining at Stamford Bridge, while Eidur Gudjohnsen, now at Group A rivals Barcelona, scored the other three goals. Georgi Petkov and Stanislav Angelov played both legs for Levski.

Bremen blunted • Five years on and a fifth successive Matchday 1 victory was the perfect way for Chelsea FC to launch a new challenge for Europe's premier club prize and they will be looking to build on a 2-0 win against Werder Bremen as they return to the Bulgarian capital.

• Michael Essien broke the deadlock midway through the first half, his first UEFA Champions League goal since he scored twice against Bremen for in the last 16 in March 2005. Michael Ballack then took over penalty-taking duties from Lampard to put the issue beyond doubt in the 68th minute.

Travel woes • Last season was the first time Chelsea have failed to reach the quarter-finals in four UEFA Champions League seasons but their consistency has not been built on success away from home. On the road, they have won just one of their last eight games - 2-0 at RSC Anderlecht on Matchday 5 last season - five of which ended in defeat.

• However, they have good memories of their two previous visits to the Bulgarian capital. As well as the 2-0 win against Levski in the 2001/02 UEFA Cup first round, Chelsea triumphed 1-0 against PFC CSKA Sofia in the second round of the 1970/71 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. In those four matches they scored seven without reply.

Match facts

Group A

• Levski began their campaign with a 5-0 defeat at FC Barcelona and already lie three points adrift of Chelsea who eased to a 2-0 victory at home to Werder Bremen, in fixtures that will be reversed on Matchday 5 (22 November). While Levski and Chelsea meet in Sofia on Matchday 2, Barça travel to Bremen with the sides scheduled to do battle again in Spain on Matchday 6 (5 December), when Chelsea play host to Levski. Chelsea take on Barcelona on Matchdays 3 (18 October) and 4 (31 October) in England and Spain respectively, the same nights as Bremen meet Levski at home and then away.

Levski

• Eight players have featured in all five of Levski's matches in the competition this season: Georgi Petkov, Elin Topuzakov, Stanislav Angelov, Richard Eromoigbe, Daniel Borimov, Dimitar Telkiyski, Cédric Bardon and Emil Angelov.

• With Levski making their group-stage debut at FC Barcelona on Matchday 1, of the 14 players who were used at Camp Nou only Igor Tomašić was not making his first appearance in the competition. The defender has now played seven times in the competition proper.

• Topuzakov has featured 53 times in UEFA club competition, the only Levski player to pass the 50-match mark. Telkiyski (46 appearances) and Borimirov (45) could both reach 50 games in this season's group stage.

• Georgi Ivanov has scored the most goals in UEFA club competition in the current Levski squad having struck 15 times in 30 games. No other player has reached double figures with Borimirov the next highest scorer on seven goals.

• Veselin Minev's appearance in Barcelona marked the defender's debut in all UEFA club competition.

• Zhivko Milanov committed six fouls on Matchday 1, as did Fabio Cannavaro of Real Madrid CF and FC Steaua Bucuresti's Ciprian Marica, making the trio the most penalised players in this season's competition.

• Levski climbed to the top of the Bulgarian Premier League on Friday night with a 3-0 away win at PFC Rodopa Smolian. Defender Borislav Hristov struck his first top-flight goal early in the second period in only his fourth game since joining Levski in January, with Ivanov adding two more goals.

• Ivanov's double makes him the division's top scorer with eight goals in six league games.

• "I'm happy with our performance," said Levski coach Stanimir Stoilov. "Ivanov is gradually getting back to his best and I'm sure he will play major role in our forthcoming Champions League games."

• Stoilov decided to rest Borimirov and Tomašic for the trip to Smolian. Injured strikers Emil Angelov and Valeri Domovchiyski also missed the game while teenagers Mariyan Ognyanov and Lachezar Baltanov were included in the squad while Stanislav Angelov, Bardon and Hristo Yovov were withdrawn in the second half to save them for Wednesday's fixture.

• The victory moved Levski a point above PFC Lokomotiv Sofia, who had won their first six games of the season but slipped to a 2-1 defeat at PFC Litex Lovech on Saturday.

• The clean sheet against Smolian was Levski's sixth in succession in the league and they are yet to concede a goal on the domestic front this season having scored 23. Along with the six games they have played, the club's postponed opening day fixture against PFC Conegliano Sofia has been awarded to them 3-0.

• Levski earned a 1-0 win against arch-rivals PFC CSKA Sofia on 17 September. Bardon converted the winner from the penalty spot in the 49th minute, becoming the first Frenchman to score in the derby.

• Bardon's penalty was Levski's sixth spot-kick of the season. They have only converted half of their penalties, having missed three already.

• Striker Emil Angelov suffered a thigh injury after coming on as a late substitute against CSKA and is expected to miss the visit of Chelsea.

• Stoilov said: "The win against CSKA Sofia is very important for us as we were trailing behind them in the table. We tried to attack and scored our goal, but then we were put under pressure. We can play better, but the most important thing is the win."

• Left-back Lucio Wagner, who also missed the match against Smolian, returns to the Levski squad to face Chelsea after missing the defeat at Barcelona through suspension.

Chelsea

• Andriy Shevchenko is in line to make his 100th UEFA club competition appearance against Levski; the Ukrainian striker currently has 56 goals to his name in 99 matches.

• The Ukrainian's next goal will move above Eusébio in the all-time scorers' list in UEFA club competition. He is currently tied with the Portuguese legend on 56 goals, six behind leader Gerd Müller on 62.

The midfielder added a second from the edge of the penalty area seven minutes later.

• The win put the English champions top of the Premiership table for the first time this season.

• Mourinho said: "I'm very happy with the three points, but very, very happy with the result. We played very well in a very difficult game. Fulham are a good team and against Chelsea they raise their game. Paulo Ferreira for me was man of the match by far, as he is not a central defender and played fantastically."

Competition facts

• UEFA Champions League: Did you know?

Domestic champions: This season's competition features 16 domestic league winners from last season, but none of the eight groups comprising the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League features four champions. Only Group A features three league winners from the last campaign with England, Spain and represented by their champions, namely Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona and PFC Levski Sofia. The fourth club in the group, Werder Bremen, finished second in last season's Bundesliga, five points behind FC Bayern München. All of the remaining groups feature two domestic league winners with the exception of Group H, where Belgian side RSC Anderlecht are the only champions. Group rivals AEK Athens FC were runners-up in Greece, while LOSC Lille Métropole and AC Milan were classified in third place in Ligue 1 and Serie A respectively. Alongside 16 champions, there are nine runners-up and six third-placed finishers. Arsenal FC are the only club in the group stage to have finished in fourth place in their domestic league championship last season.

Consecutive participations: This season, Manchester United FC have extended their consecutive participation in the UEFA Champions League to eleven, a record in the competition. Bayern, PSV Eindhoven, Olympiacos CFP and Real Madrid CF are making their tenth consecutive appearances, one ahead of Arsenal.

Knockout streak: In qualifying for the 2005/06 knockout phase, Real Madrid CF equalled Manchester United FC's record of nine consecutive seasons in advancing past the group stage. While United's streak came to an end last season, Madrid have featured in the knockout phase every time since the 1996/97 campaign. In those nine seasons, United won the competition once while they also advanced as far as the semi-finals twice, the quarter-finals four times and the first knockout round twice in the other eight seasons. Madrid, meanwhile, have won the competition three times in the last nine years while they advanced as far as the semi-finals twice and the quarter-finals twice. However, in the last two seasons their interest in the competition has ended at the first knockout round.

European return: Of all 32 clubs competing in this season's UEFA Champions League, only FC Spartak Moskva and FC Girondins de Bordeaux did not participate in a UEFA club competition during the 2005/06 season. Indeed, the two clubs are making their first appearance in UEFA club competition since the 2003/04 season.

Past masters: Four clubs competing in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League were involved in the competition when it started during the 1992/93 season. AC Milan were beaten finalists (losing to Olympique de Marseille), while PSV Eindhoven, PFC CSKA Moskva and FC Porto all participated in the group stage. In addition, AEK Athens FC and FC Barcelona were knocked out in the second round, the last hurdle before the group stage.

Long road for debutants: Five clubs have advanced to the group stage from the European Champion Clubs' Cup second qualifying round including this season's two debutants, FC København and PFC Levski Sofia. They are joined by FC Spartak Moskva, FC Dynamo Kyiv and FC Steaua Bucuresti as clubs who had to play four matches to claim their place in the group stage of the competition. A debutant has not won the competition since Juventus in 1995/96, the Italian side becoming the third club to achieve this following Olympique de Marseille (1992/93, first UEFA Champions League final) and AFC Ajax (1994/95).

No qualifiers: Of the 32 clubs involved in the group stage, only AS Roma and FC Girondins de Bordeaux have yet to play a qualifying round match in order to reach the UEFA Champions League. Roma are making their fourth appearance in the competition, while Bordeaux are involved for the second time.

Pedigree: Four of the former winners of the competition since it included a group stage element from the 1992/93 season are not participating in this season's UEFA Champions League, namely Olympique de Marseille (1992/93), AFC Ajax (1994/95), Juventus (1995/96) and BV Borussia Dortmund (1996/97). The last ten winners of the competition, Real Madrid CF (three), Manchester United FC, FC Bayern München, AC Milan, FC Porto, Liverpool FC and FC Barcelona are involved in this season's group stage. Only three winners from the last ten UEFA Cup finals are not involved in this season's UEFA Champions League group stage, namely Parma FC (1998/99), Feyenoord (2001/02) and Sevilla FC (2005/06). Liverpool and Porto have won both competitions in the past decade, while the remaining UEFA Cup winners in that time are FC Internazionale Milano, Galatasaray SK, Valencia CF and PFC CSKA Moskva.

UEFA information

A UEFA technical report says the most successful teams in last season's UEFA Champions League were able to find the right blend of brilliance and pragmatism. "There can be no doubting that defensive blocks were impressively efficient, or that counterattacking has become a crucial weapon in the modern armoury," said the report produced by UEFA's football development division under technical director Andy Roxburgh in conjunction with a distinguished team of coaches including Rafael Benítez, Sir Alex Ferguson and Gérard Houllier. The number of goals (not including the qualifying competition) in 2005/06 totalled 285 - a drop of 46 on the previous season.

UEFA officials met their counterparts from the European federations of basketball (FIBA Europe), handball (EHF), ice hockey (IIHF) and volleyball (CEV) in Brussels on 20 September to discuss the future of sport on the continent. The federations underlined the need to recognise the specificity of sport as an activity with a social, educational and cultural role – and said it was essential to maintain their autonomy as decision-making bodies. They expressed their support of the Independent European Sport Review as a means of implementing the content of the Nice Declaration on the Specific Characteristics of sport. They also welcomed the White Paper project launched by the European Commission and said that the Independent European Sport Review should be incorporated into it.

Italy's FIFA World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro gave his backing to World Heart Day on Sunday, for which the World Health Federation and UEFA united to promote physical activity and sport as an important element in tackling the rising levels of obesity, particularly among children. "I know my heart is the strongest, most important muscle in my body and a winning performance depends on its vitality," said the Real Madrid CF defender. UEFA's role in backing World Heart Day - with events taking place in more than 100 countries - was the promotion of physical exercise through playing football, not only as a source of enjoyment but also to maintain physical fitness.

The deployment by a coach of one sole striker in a tactical system does not necessarily imply negative thinking - and football's lawmaking authorities are being asked to examine the offside rule and its interpretation. These were two key elements that emerged from a three-day FIFA/UEFA gathering in Berlin a fortnight ago, in which national-team coaches, technical directors and experts from Europe and beyond examined the technical and tactical trends that were evident in both the FIFA World Cup in Germany and last season's UEFA Champions League. uefa.com users will be able to watch video on-demand this season including extensive UEFA Champions League action. Head coach profiles

Stanimir Stoilov Date of birth: 13 February 1967 Nationality: Bulgarian Playing career: FC Haskovo, PFC Levski Sofia (three times), Fenerbahçe SK, PFC CSKA Sofia, SC Campomaiorense, PFC Slavia Sofia Coaching career: PFC Levski Sofia

A relative novice in the world of football coaching, former Bulgarian international Stanimir Stoilov has an in-depth knowledge of the game having excelled in midfield, defence and attack during his playing days. Since replacing Georgi Vassilev as coach of PFC Levski Sofia, he has swept the board in domestic competition and is now looking for success on the European stage having guided the side to the UEFA Cup quarter-finals in 2005/06.

Stoilov's playing career was similarly gilded. After starting out at hometown club FC Haskovo, he rose to prominence after a switch to Levski in 1990, winning the Bulgarian cup in 1991 and 1992 before joining Turkish side Fenerbahçe SK. A serious knee injury put the brakes on the young forward's progress and following a short spell at PFC CSKA Sofia he returned to Levski in summer 1994. Twelve months later, with a Bulgarian league winners' medal added to his collection, he moved on to Portuguese outfit SC Campomaiorense. Again it proved a fleeting association and he returned for a third spell with Levski in July 1998 after a stint with city rivals PFC Slavia Sofia.

By now a composed central defender, Stoilov was handed the captain's armband and led the team through a halcyon period in which the Sofia side dominated Bulgarian football, winning three league titles to add to their trio of cup triumphs. In 2003 he hung up his boots and, having acted as assistant coach since 2000, he took over from Vassilev in 2004. He won the cup and Super Cup in his first year and the league in his second before helping Levski become the first Bulgarian club to reach the UEFA Champions league group stages at the start of 2006/07.

José Mourinho Date of birth: 26 January 1963 Nationality: Portuguese Coaching career: SL Benfica, UD Leiria, FC Porto, Chelsea FC

Tactically astute and a superb motivator, José Mourinho has carved a reputation as the best and most scientific young coach in Europe. In 2005 he was declared a high officer of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique by Portuguese president Jorge Sampaio. The Order is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon a Portuguese citizen, recognising his achievements as manager of FC Porto and Chelsea FC.

Mourinho started working life as a teacher before being lured into football by Sir Bobby Robson as part of his staff at Sporting Clube de Portugal, Porto and FC Barcelona. After a brief nine-game spell at SL Benfica and a highly successful tenure at UD Leiria he became Porto coach in January 2002. In his first full season, 2002/03, he won the UEFA Cup and a domestic double. The next year Porto retained their league title and claimed the UEFA Champions League with a 3-0 defeat of AS Monaco FC in Gelsenkirchen.

Replacing Claudio Ranieri, Mourinho moved to Stamford Bridge on 2 June 2004 and went on to mastermind the club's first domestic title in 50 years with a record points total and just one loss, adding the League Cup. The Portuguese agreed a new five-year contract in May 2005. Twelve months later, he was celebrating a second successive Premiership title although, after seeing Chelsea again fall short in the UEFA Champions League, it is Europe which will take much of his focus in 2006/07.

Laurent Duhamel has forced his way into the leading European refereeing ranks with some excellent performances in recent seasons.

Born in Rouen, France, on 10 October 1968, Duhamel gained his FIFA badge in 1999 and in January of that year refereed his first international - a 7-0 victory for Israel against Estonia. In 2001 he officiated at the UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup in Bari, while also furthering his experience in the years to come with appearances across the continent in other youth tournaments, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Champions League qualifying and play-offs for three UEFA European Under-21 Championship finals.

His star was on the rise in 2005 when he took charge of the second leg of the UEFA Intertoto Cup final between Valencia CF and Hamburger SV, and that December he broke his group-stage duck by presiding over the 1-1 Matchday 6 fixture between Club Brugge KV and FC Bayern München. A respected official in his homeland, Duhamel followed his appointment for the 2001 French Cup final by taking charge of the 2006 showpiece in which Paris Saint-Germain FC defeated Olympique de Marseille 2-1. His brother Stéphane was one of his assistants at the Stade de France that day, capping a fine day and memorable season.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list will be reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubs from simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given a greater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as a consequence.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated budgeted income for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League is €750m – higher than the 2005/06 campaign revenue which amounted to CHF943m (approx. €610m).

Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the total revenue received from television and commercial contracts concluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will go to the 32 clubs taking part in the group stage of Europe's premier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent is earmarked for European football and remains with UEFA to cover organisational and administrative costs, as well as for solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.

It is also stipulated that participating clubs will receive 82 per cent of any revenue received from the same stream in excess of € 530m, with the remaining 18 per cent allocated to UEFA for European football. In addition, 50 per cent of the revenue received from new media contracts concluded by UEFA will also be available for distribution to the clubs, and the remaining 50 per cent will be allocated to the above-mentioned European football portion/quota.

The gross income for 2006/07 is estimated at €750m, and according to projections, will be made up of € 743.3m from TV and commercial contracts and €6.7m from new media contracts.

The fixed amount to the clubs is €276.6m. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive a starting bonus of €2m. In addition, they will receive a match bonus of €400,000 per match. Performance bonuses will amount to €600,000 for a win and €300,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €2.2m, the eight quarter-finalists €2.5m each and the four semi-finalists €3m each. The UEFA Champions League winners will receive €7m, and the runners-up €4m.

This means that a total minimum amount of €4.4m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €22.7m, not counting the market pool share and gate receipts.

The remaining €270.4m will be distributed according to the proportional value of each TV market represented by the clubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League, and to be split among the number of teams – four, three, two or one – participating from a given association.

• Format: The UEFA Champions League group stage draw in Monaco on 24 August saw the 32 teams divided into eight groups of four. Clubs from the same association could not be drawn into the same group. Each club plays one home and one away match against each other club in its group. Three points are awarded for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a defeat. If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings. a) higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question; b) superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question; c) higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question; d) superior goal difference from all group matches played; e) higher number of goals scored; f) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question as well as its association, over the previous five seasons.

The eight group-winners and eight runners-up of the group stage qualify for the first knockout round, to be played over two legs on 20 February and 7 March 2007. The clubs that finish this stage in third position in their group move into the round of 32 of the UEFA Cup. The clubs that finish this stage in fourth position in their group are eliminated from UEFA club competition for the season.
