• PFC Levski Sofia V Chelsea FC MATCH PRESS KIT Vassil Levski National Stadium, Sofia Wednesday, 27 September 2006 - 20:45CET Group a - Matchday 2
PFC Levski Sofia v Chelsea FC MATCH PRESS KIT Vassil Levski National Stadium, Sofia Wednesday, 27 September 2006 - 20:45CET Group A - Matchday 2 There was no concession to PFC Levski Sofia's unfamiliarity with UEFA Champions League football in a fixture schedule which gave the Bulgarian champions a debut appearance away to reigning champions FC Barcelona. A 5-0 defeat proved the most painful of introductions and it gets little easier with Chelsea FC their opponents on Matchday 2. • Stanimir Stoilov's side were undone by two first-half goals in Spain and Barça went on to emphasise their superiority with three more after the break - all five goals coming from different scorers. Levski's supporters will be praying that lessons were quickly learned as Chelsea's superstars arrive threatening to inflict similar damage. Bad omens • Three previous home games against English opposition in UEFA club competition all resulted in aggregate defeat for the Sofia outfit and their only positive result in six individual matches came in the second round of the 1983/84 UEFA Cup with a 1-1 draw at Watford FC. They lost 3-1 in the return, the first of three home defeats in the UEFA Cup. Liverpool FC triumphed 4-2 in 2003/04, two years after Levski lost 2-0 to Chelsea. • John Terry scored the opener that day, while Frank Lampard was on target in the 3-0 first-leg victory. The pair are the only players still remaining at Stamford Bridge, while Eidur Gudjohnsen, now at Group A rivals Barcelona, scored the other three goals.

Olympique de Marseille v FC Dinamo Bucuresti PRESS KIT Vélodrome, Marseille Wednesday, 14 December 2005 - 20:45 local time Group F - Matchday 5 With Olympique de Marseille safely through to the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup but still looking for a Matchday 5 win that will enable them to win Group F, attention falls on FC Dinamo Bucuresti as they also look to progress to the Round of 32. Dinamo find themselves needing three points to be certain that either the holders PFC CSKA Moskva or SC Heerenveen do not overtake them in the group table. •The clubs have met on one previous occasion in UEFA competition, in the 1992/93 European Champion Clubs' Cup second round. Marseille ground out a goalless draw at Dinamo in the first leg, then won 2-0 at the Stade Vélodrome with Croatian international forward Alen Bokšic scoring after 32 and 68 minutes. The victory carried a big prize, for Marseille entered the group stage of the inaugural UEFA Champions League and went on to win the final with a 1-0 defeat of AC Milan. •While the success against Dinamo remains Marseille's sole meeting in UEFA competition with a Romanian club, Dinamo have come up against French clubs on two other occasions. •The Romanian team were drawn against FC Girondins de Bordeaux in the 1984/85 European Cup second round, and lost 1-0 in the first leg in France with Dieter Müller scoring the only goal. In the return leg at the Dinamo stadium, Marin Dragnea wiped out the first-leg deficit after just eight minutes but the game went into extra time.

  • FC Barcelona V PFC Levski Sofia MATCH PRESS KIT Camp Nou, Barcelona Tuesday, 12 September 2006 - 20:45CET Group a - Matchday 1
FC Barcelona v PFC Levski Sofia MATCH PRESS KIT Camp Nou, Barcelona Tuesday, 12 September 2006 - 20:45CET Group A - Matchday 1 Seventeen weeks after lifting the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the second time, FC Barcelona begin their title defence with a home game against the first Bulgarian side to qualify for the group stage. It is just about the most difficult first hurdle that the draw could have thrown up for PFC Levski Sofia and their confidence will not be helped by the fact that the reigning champions traditionally make a flying start on Europe's biggest club stage. • Barcelona have won their opening group game in each of their last five campaigns, scoring 12 goals in the process. That impressive goalscoring record on Matchday 1 is mirrored by the Spanish side's home record against visitors from Bulgaria in European competition; in four home ties they have come out on top each time and totalled 18 goals. High-scoring affair • Their only previous meeting with Levski came in the quarter-finals of the 1975/76 UEFA Cup, a high-scoring affair in which the Catalan club eventually emerged as 8-5 victors. Barça won the home game 4-0 before going down 5-4 in the Bulgarian capital despite two goals from Johan Neeskens - now the assistant coach at Camp Nou. • Barcelona have always emerged victorious in the two-legged ties against Bulgarian opposition, including the 1959/60 preliminary round in the European Champion Clubs' Cup - the only previous time they have faced opposition from that country in this competition.
