Fußball Arena München, Munich Tuesday, 22 November 2005 - 20:45 CET Group A - Matchday 5

A solitary goal after 60 minutes from José Paolo Guerrero at the Stadion on Matchday 1 allowed FC Bayern München to beat SK Rapid Wien and get their UEFA Champions League campaign off to a perfect start. The German champions will now look to home advantage in their quest for further points towards qualification for the knockout stages.

Meanwhile, their Austrian counterparts Rapid are eliminated from European football this season after four straight defeats. However, they will need no motivation as they are still searching for an elusive first UEFA Champions League victory in their eleventh match in the competition.

Previous meeting •Before this season, the clubs had met on one previous occasion in UEFA club competition, in the quarter-finals of the 1966/67 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Rapid took a 1-0 lead from their home leg thanks to a goal from August Starek, but Bayern fought back at home to level the contest. It was Gerd Müller who finally wrapped up the tie for Bayern with a goal after 106 minutes and his team went on to lift the trophy.

•Bayern, whose Matchday 1 meeting with Rapid was their first against Austrian opposition in UEFA competition, have also played two other ties against Austrian clubs. Both were against rapid's city rivals FK Wien in successive seasons in the European Champion Clubs' Cup. In the second round of the 1985/86 event, Bayern won 7-5 on aggregate, and at the same stage the following campaign Bayern won 3-1 on aggregate.

Perfect record •Bayern's overall home record against Austrian clubs is three wins in three games with eight goals scored and two conceded.

Six defeats for Rapid •Rapid, who lost their unbeaten home record against German clubs in the defeat by Bayern on 14 September, have yet to record a win in Germany. In six previous visits going back 45 years, the Austrian team have lost all six matches, scoring just two while conceding 13 goals.

First Rapid defeat •The first loss in Germany was on 23 November 1960, in the first round of the European Cup, when FC Wismut Aue levelled the tie at 3-3 with a 2-0 home win. In the days of replays, Rapid eventually triumphed 1-0 in a decisive match played in Basle.

Defeat in Munich

•Their last defeat in Germany came in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup second round, when they were beaten 2-1 by Bayern's city rivals TSV 1860 München, although Rapid did triumph in the tie. Early goals from Daniel Borimirov and Bernhard Winkler took 1860 München to within a goal of Rapid's 3-0 first-leg lead, only for Thomas Zingler's 69th- minute goal to make sure of Rapid's progress 4-2 on aggregate.

•Bayern midfielder was in the 1860 München lineup for both legs of that UEFA Cup tie against Rapid.

Champion coincidence •By a strange coincidence, both clubs have won the German championship. Bayern won their first title in 1932, while Rapid appear on the honours list as German champions in 1941.

Team facts: Bayern •Bayern are competing in their ninth successive UEFA Champions League having won the competition in the 2000/01 season. The German side have advanced to the knockout stage in the past eight seasons with the exception of their 2002/03 campaign.

•Bayern are chasing their first appearance in the European Champion Clubs’ Cup final - and their eighth overall - since their penalty shoot-out defeat of Valencia CF at the end of the 2000/01 season having recovered from the heartbreak of conceding two goals in added time against Manchester United FC in the final two years previously. The German side, together with AFC Ajax, dominated the European football landscape during the 1970s with three successive victories in the competition against Club Atlético de Madrid (1973/74), Leeds United AFC (1974/75) and AS Saint-Etienne (1975/76). They also played in the 1981/82 and 1985/86 finals, but lost out to Aston Villa FC (1-0) and FC Porto (2-1) respectively.

•Both Bayern and Juventus hold the distinct record of being the only teams to compete in the European Champion Clubs' Cup final in each of the last four decades. Bayern's record is as follows: 2000/01: FC Bayern München 1-1 Valencia CF (5-4 on penalties after extra time) 1998/99: Manchester United FC 2-1 FC Bayern München 1986/87: FC Bayern München 1-2 FC Porto 1981/82: Aston Villa FC 1-0 FC Bayern München 1975/76: FC Bayern München 1-0 AS Saint-Etienne 1974/75: FC Bayern München 2-0 Leeds United AFC 1973/74: Club Atlético de Madrid 0-4 FC Bayern München (final replay after the two sides drew 1-1 in the final). •Bayern advanced as one of the 16 clubs to qualify automatically for the competition having won last season's German by 14 points from FC Schalke 04. It was Bayern's sixth Bundesliga title in the past nine seasons and their 18th since the current league format came into being at the start of the 1963/64 campaign.

•The German giants edged towards their 50th victory in the UEFA Champions League with 1-0 victories away to SK Rapid Wien and at home against Club Brugge KV on the opening two matchdays. José Paulo Guerrero's goal on the hour was enough to gain a win in while Martin Demichelis (32) was on target against the Belgian champions.

•Victory number 49 came on Matchday 3 as first-half goals from Sebastian Deisler (32) and Martin Demichelis (39) helped Bayern exorcise the ghosts of last season's twin defeats by Juventus with an impressive 2-1 win on home soil. Although unnerved by Zlatan Ibrahimovic's last-minute close-range tap-in, 's side deserved this prestigious victory and the precious three points it brought, after a courageous attacking display which ruffled the Italian champions throughout.

•But Juventus were to avenge their Matchday 3 defeat with a 2-1 success at the Stadio Delle Alpi in the return fixture. Two goals from David Trezeguet (62, 85) provided the Turin club with the win after Sebastian Deisler (66) had restored parity for the Bavarian club. •Having entered the season with 100 matches under their belt in the competition, Bayern are ranked third in the list of the 32 clubs competing in this season’s competition. Of this season’s participating teams, only Manchester United FC (113) and Real Madrid CF (111) had played more than the Bavaria-based club at the start of the group phase.

•Bayern have played 202 matches overall in the European Champion Clubs’ Cup and the UEFA Champions League combined. In that time, Bayern won 110, drew 50 and lost 42 times with 377 goals scored and 198 conceded.

•Their match against Juventus on Matchday 5 will be their 301st match overall in all UEFA club competition. From their 300 matches to date, Bayern have won 163, drawn 71 and lost 66 times with 567 goals scored against 308 conceded.

Team facts: Rapid •Rapid are making their second appearance in the UEFA Champions League group stage having been involved in the 1996/97 season, when they drew two and lost the remaining four of their six matches. Their points both came in Vienna thanks to 1-1 draws against Fenerbahçe SK and Juventus. However, the Austrian side failed to score in their three away defeats, against Manchester United FC (2-0), Juventus (5-0) and Fenerbahçe (1-0). •Rapid featured in a UEFA club competition final as recently as the 1995/96 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup when they lost 1-0 to a Bruno N’Gotty goal after 28 minutes for Paris Saint-Germain FC in Brussels. •From the final of the Cup Winners' Cup to this season, their best performance in UEFA club competition came in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup when they reached the third round of the competition before bowing out 3-0 on aggregate to eventual beaten finalists, S.S.

Lazio. •Rapid entered the UEFA Champions League in the second qualifying round after winning last season's Austrian Bundesliga by a point from Grazer AK. It was their 31st championship, but their first since 1995/96 – which was also the last time they advanced to the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. •The Austrian champions overcame F91 Dudelange from Luxembourg in the second qualifying round, running out 9-3 aggregate winners after all but ending the tie with a 6- 1 away win in the first leg. Strike partners Muhammet Akagündüz and Axel Lawaree both helped themselves to two goals apiece. Rapid allowed Dudelange to take a two- goal interval lead in the return leg in Vienna, but two goals from Lawaree (47, 81) and another from Matthias Dollinger (86) eased Austrian nerves. •Rapid were held at home in their third qualifying round first leg by Russian champions FC Lokomotiv Moskva, for whom Aleksandr Samedov opened the scoring after nine minutes. Rapid levelled 15 minutes from time through Josef Valachovič and the Slovakian defender was on target in the return leg in Moscow, scoring the only goal of the game six minutes from time to secure Rapid's passage to the group stage for the second time in their history.

• But Matchdays 1 and 2 yielded no goals for and four against in two defeats. FC Bayern München won at the Ernst Happel stadium thanks to José Paulo Guerrero's goal on the hour while 13 days later David Trezeguet (27), Adrian Mutu (82) and Zlatan Ibrahimović (85) were on target for Juventus in a 30 win.

• More of the same followed on Matchday 3 as Rapid slumped to their third successive defeat in the competition, on this occasion at home to Club Brugge KV for whom Boško Balaban scored the only goal of the game 15 minutes from time. The defeat was Rapid's sixth consecutive loss in the competition.

• The Austrian side opened the scoring in their Matchday 4 engagement away to Club Brugge thanks to Marek Kincl’s diving header after only 33 seconds at the Jan Breydelstadion. But the home side hit back to claim backtoback wins through Javier Portillo (9), Boško Balaban (25) and veteran Gert Verheyen (63). Steffen Hoffmann’s 81stminute header ensured a nervous finale, but the Belgian side held on. • Rapid scored two goals in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 20 appearances in the competition against Club Brugge on Matchday 4. The two goals also doubled their alltime tally as well as providing their first goals outside of Vienna in the competition. Their other goals in the UEFA Champions League came in their other appearance in the group stage during the 1996/97 season when goals from Christian Stumpf and Andrzej Lesiak secured two 11 draws at home to Fenerbahçe SK and Juventus as Rapid amassed two points from their six engagements in the competition. • To date, Rapid have played 183 matches in UEFA club competitions, but they are still waiting for their first victory in the UEFA Champions League having drawn two and lost eight of their engagements to date scoring four goals and conceding 20 times.

Head coach profiles Felix Magath Once an elegant creative midfielder for West Germany and Hamburger SV, Felix Magath has added steel and discipline to his methods to become the country's foremost coach. He has proved himself equal to the task of replacing Ottmar Hitzfeld at FC Bayern München, helping the Bavarians achieve domestic dominance. Magath enjoyed a glittering international career, his 43 caps encompassing victory in the 1980 UEFA European Championship in Italy and the 1982 and 1986 FIFA World Cups, both of which saw the midfielder collect runners-up medals. A one-club man, Magath scored 46 times in 306 Bundesliga matches during a ten-year playing career at , writing himself into folklore by scoring the only goal of the 1983 European Champion Clubs' Cup final against Juventus, Hamburg's only continental title.

Magath has been rather more nomadic as a coach. He started at Hamburg, moving on to 1. FC Nürnberg, Werder Bremen, and VfB Stuttgart, where he enjoyed four fruitful seasons. In 2002/03, Magath was voted coach of the year in Germany after guiding his young team to second place in the Bundesliga - feats which attracted Bayern's attention. He switched to Munich in May 2004, and promptly won the title at the first attempt having set a Bundesliga record of 15 successive league wins.

Josef Hickersberger Josef Hickersberger has enjoyed a distinguished career in Austria which has encompassed FIFA World Cup appearances as a player (1978) and coach (1990). He started out in football in 1966 at Amstetten prior to a move to FK Austria Wien where he would win back-to-back titles in 1969 and 1970, together with Austrian Cups in 1967 and 1971. Hickersberger then tried his luck across the border, turning out for Offenbacher Kickers and Fortuna Düsseldorf before returning to his homeland after Argentina '78 to play for SW Innsbruck. He ended his career with SK Rapid Wien following their 1982 title triumph.

'Hicke' scored five goals in 39 appearances for Austria, ending his international career following the famous 3-2 victory over West Germany in Argentina. After coaching lower- league teams, he took charge of the Austrian Under-21s and then the senior side, guiding them to the 1990 World Cup two years after his appointment. He lost his job after the shock defeat by the Faroe Islands in a EURO qualifier in 1990, but bounced back quickly, moving to Düsseldorf and Austria Wien - where he won the and Super Cup - before spells in Bahrain, Egypt and Qatar. In 2002 he returned to Rapid Wien, taking over a squad in crisis and moulding a low- budget side with few stars. His reward was to lead the side to their first title since 1996 - and their 31st in total - and subsequently the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. Hickersberger will leave Rapid on 1 January to become coach of Austria, with SV Pasching's taking over.

Domestic news Juventus leave Roma in ruins (Saturday, 19 November 2005) The UEFA Champions League Group A sides completed a clean sweep of domestic victories on Saturday. Italian champions Juventus were impressive winners away against AS Roma and FC Bayern München earned a hard-fought victory at DSC Arminia Bielefeld, while SK Rapid Wien and Club Brugge KV claimed comprehensive home wins.

AS Roma 1-4 Juventus

Goals from Pavel Nedvěd, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Trezeguet (2) helped Juventus to a superb 41 win away at Roma on Saturday. The Serie A leaders broke the deadlock in firsthalf addedtime through Czech Republic midfield player Nedvěd, who beat goalkeeper Maragnon with a precise header. Ibrahimovic made it two just before the hour mark with a fine run on the counterattack, and Trezeguet quickly added the third and fourth goals, with a header and rightfooted shot respectively.

French international defender Lilian Thuram was sent off for a foul on Vincenzo Montella a minute later, and Francesco Totti reduced the arrears from the penalty spot, but Roma never came close to reeling in tenman Juve. Gianluigi Buffon (shoulder), Alessandro Birindelli (knee), Jonathan Zebina and Ruben Olivera (both thigh) all missed out through injury.

Bianconeri coach Fabio Capello said: "Roma played the first half at extremely high tempo. They had to slow down a bit in the second half and we started to play very well, scoring three goals in quick succession. Overall I am really satisfied with the performance of my team. I especially liked their mental approach because it is never easy to play at the Stadio Olimpico." Club Brugge KV 40 RAA Louviéroise

Club Brugge bounced back from defeat against SV ZulteWaregem two weeks ago with a resounding victory on Saturday. After a goalless first half, the Belgian champions cut loose as La Louvière folded under intense pressure. Javier Portillo had hit the post and had a goal disallowed in the opening period but took just two secondhalf minutes to get on the scoresheet, prodding the ball in after Philippe Clement connected with an Ivan Leko corner. Leko volleyed a sensational second eight minutes later, and substitute Rune Lange headed a third midway through the half. Grégory Dufer completed the scoring ten minutes from time, assisted by Portillo. Michael Klukowski came on as a substitute after returning from a knee injury while Manasseh Ishiaku, Jason Vandelannoite and Dieter Van Tornhout are nearly back after playing with the reserves on Friday. Joos Valgaeren (knee), Glenn Verbauwhede (shoulder), Olivier De Cock (achilles) and Jonathan Blondel are still out. Coach Jan Ceulemans said: "Club Brugge are obliged to win at home against La

Louvière. It was deserved, we should have scored two goals before the break. Hopefully it shows that our defeat at ZulteWaregem was an aberration. Now we have most players back from injury, so we have more options. But we will need them all with our busy schedule."

DSC Arminia Bielefeld 12 FC Bayern München Bayern came from a goal behind at Arminia on Saturday to claim all three points courtesy of two late goals from Claudio Pizarro. Isaac Boakye gave the home side the lead on the hour but Bayern recovered in the final eight minutes when Pizarro equalised, before hitting an addedtime winner to keep the Bundesliga champions five points clear at the summit. Bayern went into the match without midfielder Michael Ballack, who was rested ahead of Tuesday's game against Rapid after picking up a thigh injury on international duty for Germany last week. He had been expected to be replaced by Ali Karimi, but the Iranian midfielder was forced to withdraw after picking up a minor thigh problem in the warmup. Hasan Salihamidzic (abdominal), Andreas Görlitz and Roque Santa Cruz (both cruciate ligaments) were also absent, but Bixente Lizarazu returned following a calf injury while Philipp Lahm earned a place on the bench after six months out.

"We were slightly lucky today and we didn't really deserve to win," said coach Felix Magath. "Bielefeld put on an excellent display and they would have deserved to take something from the match."

SK Rapid Wien 31 SK Sturm Graz

Rapid got straight back into their stride after the international break with a classy win at the Ernst Happel stadium on Saturday. The goals came from Muhammet Akagündüz, Sebastian Martinez and Marek Kincl, who is the league's top scorer with nine. Steffen Hoffman could have added a fourth but missed from the penalty spot.

Defender Markus Katzer made his return after spending six months out with a ruptured cruciate knee ligament, while goalkeeper Helge Payer returned after recovering from an achilles injury. György Korsos (hip), Axel Lawaree (ankle) and Marcin Adamski (calf) all missed out injured. The latter two will definitely not play against Bayern. Coach Josef Hickersberger withdrew midfielder Andreas Ivanschitz after an hour and brought on Peter Hlinka. "Once we took the lead it became easier for us," said Hickersberger. "We had some good chances and deserved this win. I hope we can take this form for the match against Bayern. We will try to play our natural game in Munich and score some goals."
