Vélodrome, Marseille Wednesday, 14 December 2005 - 20:45 local time Group F - Matchday 5

With safely through to the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup but still looking for a Matchday 5 win that will enable them to win Group F, attention falls on FC Dinamo Bucuresti as they also look to progress to the Round of 32. Dinamo find themselves needing three points to be certain that either the holders PFC CSKA Moskva or do not overtake them in the group table.

•The clubs have met on one previous occasion in UEFA competition, in the 1992/93 European Champion Clubs' Cup second round. Marseille ground out a goalless draw at Dinamo in the first leg, then won 2-0 at the Stade Vélodrome with Croatian international forward Alen Bokšic scoring after 32 and 68 minutes. The victory carried a big prize, for Marseille entered the group stage of the inaugural UEFA Champions League and went on to win the final with a 1-0 defeat of AC Milan.

•While the success against Dinamo remains Marseille's sole meeting in UEFA competition with a Romanian club, Dinamo have come up against French clubs on two other occasions.

•The Romanian team were drawn against FC Girondins de Bordeaux in the 1984/85 European Cup second round, and lost 1-0 in the first leg in with Dieter Müller scoring the only goal. In the return leg at the Dinamo stadium, Marin Dragnea wiped out the first-leg deficit after just eight minutes but the game went into extra time. Bordeaux eventually prevailed thanks to an 111th-minute winner from Bernard Lacombe. •Then in the group stage of the 1996 UEFA Intertoto Cup, Dinamo went down 2-1 at EA Guingamp, a result which leaves the Romanian side searching for their first win against a French club in five attempts.

Team facts: Marseille •Marseille are making their second appearance in three seasons in UEFA club competitions.

•The French club have appeared in UEFA club competitions during 16 seasons since their first match which came in the first round of the 1969/70 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. •Marseille's last season in UEFA club competitions was eventful, starting in the UEFA Champions League, then transferring to the UEFA Cup where they advanced to the final of the competition only to lose 2-0 to Valencia CF. The French side had defeated FK Austria Wien in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League to advance to the group stage where, pitted against Real Madrid CF, eventual winners FC Porto and FK Partizan, they finished in third position.

•They switched across to the UEFA Cup and beat FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, Liverpool FC, FC Internazionale Milano and Newcastle United FC to set up a final meeting against Valencia at Gothenburg's Nya stadium. Goals in either half from Vicente Rodríguez and sent the trophy back to Spain as Marseille lost a second UEFA Cup final in five years.

•Marseille have competed in four UEFA club competition finals, winning one and losing three. Their sole success came in the 1992/93 UEFA Champions League final when a 43rd-minute goal from defeated AC Milan. •Marseille also lost the 1990/91 European Cup final on penalties to FK Crvena Zvezda, while their two UEFA Cup final defeats, in 1998/99 and 2003/04, came at the hands of Parma FC (0-3) and Valencia. •Marseille qualified for the UEFA Cup first round by being one of the three clubs to win a place in the competition through the Intertoto Cup. Marseille had finished in fifth place in French , one place below automatic qualification.

•In the Intertoto Cup, Marseille overcame BSC Young Boys (5-3 on aggregate), S.S. Lazio (4-1 on agg.) and RC Deportivo La Coruña (5-3 on agg.) to advance to the UEFA Cup. Having lost the opening leg of their tie against Deportivo 2-0, Marseille looked destined for defeat after 64 minutes of the return match as the game stood at 1-1 after Jorge Andrade's ninth-minute goal for the Spanish side had cancelled out Franck Ribery's early opener for the home side. However, four goals in the last 25 minutes saw Marseille advance with Abdoulaye Méïté (65), Andrés Mendoza (74), (88) and Wilson Oruma (90+3) all finding the net.

•In the UEFA Cup first round, Marseille finally overcame Belgian side KFC Germinal Beerschot Antwerpen on penalties after the two sides failed to score a goal in 210 minutes of football. The French side overcame the Belgians 4-1 on penalties with Christian Giménez, André Luis, Taye Ismaila Taiwo and all successful from the spot.

•The French side stunned the UEFA Cup holders, PFC CSKA Moskva, by winning 2-1 in the Russian capital in their opening 2005/06 group stage encounter despite a second-half recovery which almost snatched a point for the hosts. Goals from (23) and Mamadou Niang (38) gave Marseille a deserved half-time lead, but the home side rallied after the interval and missed a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit when saved Sergei Ignashevich's spot-kick. Vágner Love (80) pulled a goal back late on, but CSKA were unable to find an equaliser. •On Matchday 3, Taye Ismaila Taiwo kept his composure to convert a last-gasp penalty as Marseille earned a narrow win against SC Heerenveen, to secure a place in the knockout stages of the competition. The Nigerian defender stepped up after Brian Vandenbussche had brought down Mamadou Niang in the penalty box, and drove the ball hard and low to the goalkeeper's left to leave the Stade Vélodrome in raptures. •PFC Levski joined Marseille in the UEFA Cup knockout stages after Hristo

Yovov's second-half strike settled their Group F game against the French side on Matchday 4. The 28-year-old forward struck ten minutes into the second half to clinch a win that doubled the Bulgarian side's UEFA Cup points haul and moved them joint top of the pool, along with Marseille, who lead only by number of away goals scored.

•To date, Marseille have played 113 matches in UEFA club competitions. In that time, the French side won 57, drew 28 and lost 28 times with 182 goals scored and 115 conceded.

Team facts: Dinamo Bucuresti •The Romanian outfit are appearing in UEFA competition for the seventh successive season and their have missed out only once in the last 26 seasons. They failed to qualify for European football in 1998/99.

•Overall, Dinamo have represented in 37 seasons since their first involvement in UEFA competition, which came in the preliminary round of the 1956/57 European Champion Clubs' Cup. •Dinamo are one of three Bucharest-based clubs involved in this season's UEFA Cup group stage – the others being FC Steaua Bucuresti and AFC Rapid Bucuresti.

•Dinamo were involved in both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Cup last season, entering the former competition in the second qualifying round where they overcame MŠK Žilina 2-0 on aggregate before losing 5-1 on aggregate to Manchester United FC.

•That negative result in the third qualifying round sent Dinamo into the UEFA Cup, but they failed to make the group stage when losing 3-1 on aggregate to FK Partizan in the first round of the competition.

•Dinamo reached the last four of UEFA club competitions on two separate occasions during the 1980s. They first qualified for the 1983/84 European Cup semi-finals after defeating FC Kuusysi, now FC Lahti, Hamburg and FC Dinamo Minsk, but lost 3-1 on aggregate to eventual winners Liverpool FC. Sammy Lee got the only goal of the opening leg at , with Ian Rush scoring twice in the return match with Alexandru Nicolae scoring Dinamo's consolation. •Six years later, Dinamo were involved in the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup after defeating KS Dinamo , Panathinaikos FC and Partizan in the earlier rounds of the competition. Dinamo had no answer to RSC Anderlecht in the semi-finals, losing 2-0 on aggregate as the Belgian side recorded two 1-0 victories. •Dinamo qualified for this season's UEFA Cup after finishing second to Steaua in the 2004/05 Romanian Divizia A. •They entered the competition at the second qualifying round stage, defeating AC

Omonia from Cyprus 4-3 on aggregate to book their place in the first round proper. •Paired against English side Everton FC in the first round, Dinamo advanced 5-2 on aggregate, laying the foundations for the victory in the opening leg in the Romanian capital as goals from (76, 90+2), (27), (51) and (74) powered them to a 5-1 win. Everton won the return leg by a single goal as Dinamo held on for the overall win. •Dinamo had to settle for a point despite dominating Dutch opponents SC Heerenveen in their opening 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage encounter. The home side created the majority of the scoring opportunities but found Heerenveen goalkeeper Boy Waterman in fantastic form as the match ended goalless. •Defeat then followed away to PFC Levski Sofia on Matchday 2 as a last-minute goal from substitute Emil Angelov proved the difference between the two sides. The Romanians looked to have done enough to earn themselves a valuable away draw despite having Alexandru Baltoi sent off after 61 minutes, but Angelov made sure his team took all three points. •On Matchday 4, UEFA Cup holders PFC CSKA Moskva's title defence is in the balance after a narrow defeat at FC Dinamo Bucuresti left them on the brink of exiting the competition at the group stage. Vlad Munteanu scored the only goal of the game after 72 minutes, pouncing on the loose ball after Ianis Zicu had cannoned a shot back off the crossbar following a strong run down the right. It was just deserts for an impressive performance by the under-fire Romanian side, who needed to win to remain in contention in Group F and now go into their final fixture as masters of their own destiny.

•To date, Dinamo Bucuresti have played 141 matches in UEFA competition. Overall, the Romanian side have won 55, drawn 22 and lost the remaining 64 matches with 215 goals scored and 197 conceded. Their scoreless draw at home to Heerenveen on the opening matchday of the 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage was their seventh in UEFA club competition, of which six have been at home.

Domestic news Marseille triumph as rivals falter (Monday, 12 December 2005) Olympique de Marseille were the only side involved in UEFA Cup Group F to record a domestic win at the weekend, earning a big victory to move up the Ligue 1 table. The French team were one of only three clubs in the section in action with FC Dinamo Bucuresti and PFC CSKA Moskva both beginning their midwinter breaks in Romania and Russia respectively. Of the two other sides that did play, PFC Levski Sofia slipped to defeat while SC Heerenveen mounted a remarkable comeback to rescue a point.

Olympique de Marseille 1-0 AJ Auxerre Marseille ended second-placed Auxerre's four-game unbeaten run, with a narrow win courtesy of Mamadou Niang. The Senegalese forward was on hand to connect with Lorik Cana's header from Samir Nasri's corner after two minutes to propel Marseille up four places to sixth in the Ligue 1 table. Spanish forward Sergio Koke was forced off during the game with a shoulder injury that will rule him out of Thursday's final Group F game against Dinamo.

"For a team who were bottom of the table after five games of the league season and had to deal with playing in two different European competitions [the UEFA Intertoto Cup and UEFA Cup], I think we have recovered pretty well," said Marseille coach Jean Fernandez observed. "The second half of the season is upon us shortly, and we will need to be strong to make a final push for European football."

FC Dinamo Bucuresti Dinamo had a week off having finished the first half of the Romanian First Division season in first place and already been knocked out of the Romanian Cup. The club made the most of the additional time by travelling to Marseille on Sunday in a bid to adapt to the conditions in the south of France. One player who will miss the UEFA Cup game is Mihaita Plesan, who has undergone surgery on damaged knee cartilage.

Dinamo go into the match knowing that only victory will guarantee a place in the last 32 and club president Ioan Becali said: "I am optimistic; I think we can win in Marseille and qualify whatever the result between Heerenveen and Levski. If we do not achieve that, will stay as coach at least until the end of the season. But I think we can win and we shall prepare for the match accordingly." SC Heerenveen 3-3 Willem II Heerenveen had to battle back from three goals down to salvage a point from their Dutch Eredivisie meeting with Willem II on Saturday. Top scorer Klaas Jan Huntelaar came off the bench after recovering from a tweaked knee ligament to score twice in the second half and lead the Heerenveen recovery. After Tom Caluwé and an Anouar Hadouir double had given Willem II a seemingly unassailable lead, Huntelaar struck twice after Arnold Bruggink had set Heerenveen on their way back.

Afterwards, Norwegian striker Bruggink said: "From the bench I thought we started well until they scored, and then they scored from every chance they got. But we know we always can come back and the goals came at the right moments for us. The 3-3 final score is still not good enough however." Heerenveen are likely to be without goalkeeper Boy Waterman (ankle) and midfielder Abdelkarim Kissi (ankle) for the visit of Levski.

PFC Litex Lovech 1-0 PFC Levski Sofia Levski played their last game before the winter break last Friday, losing 1-0 at PFC Litex Lovech in the Bulgarian Premier League. Ten-man Litex won thanks to a Milivoje Novakovič goal just seven minutes from time, a result that left them in second place, seven points adrift of leaders PFC CSKA Sofia. Already through the UEFA Cup Round of 32, Levski coach Stanimir Stoilov took the decision to release French striker Cedric Bardon and Croatian defender Igor Tomašić early for their winter break. Neither will travel to Holland for the game against Heerenveen after complaining of tiredness following the game against Litex. Levski will be also without veteran midfielder Daniel Borimirov through suspension for the match. PFC CSKA Moskva

Holders CSKA Moskva will be anxiously waiting for the outcome of the remaining group F fixtures, hoping that Marseille defeat Dinamo Bucuresti by at least two goals while at the same time Heerenveen drop points against Levski. Only if these criteria are met will CSKA stay in the competition and enter the draw for the Round of 32 on Friday.

Regardless of the result the players have already begun their holidays, with the Russian season having finished four weeks ago. However, should they remain in contention they will be able to call on Croatian striker Ivica Olić in the next stage after he recovers from a knee ligament injury. Vágner Love will also be available after deciding to stay at the club, while another Brazilian striker, Jo, is expected to join the Army Men during the winter break.
