It is situated in a rural location about 4.5 miles (7.2 km) away from the nearest town, Denbigh. Nantglyn is located on a small river, the Lliwen. This river and its parent, the Afon Ystrad, provided the water to power several corn and fulling mills in the parish. According to tradition, a monastery was founded here by Mordeyrn, grandson of Cunedda Wledig. The community includes the hamlet of Soar. Amenities: The parish church is dedicated to St James. It was extensively renovated in 1777 and again in Victorian times. A notable feature of its churchyard is the "pulpit in a tree" built into an ancient yew, which traditionally was once used by John Wesley. A memorial to the fallen of the two World Wars sits at the centre of the village. Recent History: There are now no shops remaining in Nantglyn. But previously there was a blacksmith's forge, a post office, a pub and a leather-craft shop that also sold candles (located in the old smithy). There was also a local infant / junior school, but a decline in the number of pupils led to its closure in the 1990s. There were also several Nonconformist chapels in the village, including Capel-y-Waen (Waen Nantglyn is a secondary settlement about a mile north- west of the main village), Capel Soar and Capel Salem. One of the corn mills, Segrwyd Mill, served the neighbourhood farmers until 1960. Nantglyn has had several notable residents over the centuries, including David Samwell (1751–98), the ship's surgeon aboard the Discovery during Captain Location: Cook's final voyage of exploration. Samwell kept a journal that provides a detailed record of the voyage, and he witnessed Cook's death at the hands of hos- tile natives in Hawaii in 1779. Dr. William Owen Pughe (1759–1835), a well-known literary figure who compiled a Welsh-English dictionary and a Welsh glosses.majoring.inversion grammar, among other works, lived in the village for the last 10 years of his life, although he was not born there.

  • Town and Area Plan: Denbigh
DENBIGH TOWN & AREA PLAN “LOOKING FORWARD TOGETHER” 2013 – 2020 March 2014 DENBIGH TOWN PLAN “LOOKING FORWARD TOGETHER” 2012 – 2020 Revised August 2013 2 Introduction Denbighshire County Council has adopted a strategic aim of being “a high performing council close to the community”. To help achieve this aim, the County Council is inviting the town and community councils and the businesses, community and voluntary sectors in each of its main towns and the smaller outlying communities which relate to them to join together to develop “town plans”. These will be living documents which will be subject to regular reviews and will set out the current situation in the towns the key challenges and opportunities which they will face over the next decade a vision for each town which will provide it with a sustainable future, and realistic and achievable actions which will deliver that vision. Denbigh, the third largest town in the county is a medieval market town, steeped in history and dominated by the castle built during the reign of Edward I. The original town walls are still in place apart from a 100 yard stretch. Denbigh was given its borough charter in the 13th century and it remained a borough until 1974. The town, which prospered during Tudor times, (one of the most prosperous in Wales) today boasts over 200 listed buildings. The older parts of the town have close knit narrow streets, some grand medieval merchants' houses and many terraced houses, which retain the sense of the medieval town plan. Much of the town is now designated a Conservation Area.

M . C. 19501 IONAL REGISTER OF ARCHIVES Clwyd Record Office HANDLIST OF THE DENBIGH BOROUGH RECORDS Ref: BD/A INTRODUCTION On 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act, 1972, the ancient borough of Denbigh was merged with a number of other authorities to form the Glyndwr District Council. In the months prior to reorganisation, the Record Offices in both Denbighshire and Flintshire were active in approach ing clerks of the authorities which were to be superseded, seeking permission to survey and list local government records which would not be required by the new councils taking office on 1 April, but which would be of considerable historic interest in years to come. The records of Denbigh Borough Council were surveyed, and in response to an invitation from the County Archivist, one of the last acts of the council in March 1974 was generously to agree to the deposit on loan of all its non-current records in the Record Office at Ruthin, where the archives of the authorities in the former county of Denbigh are preserved. Under the terms of the Local Government Act, the borough charters became the property of the new Denbigh Town Council, and they remain in its custody. However the town council has kindly allowed photographic copies to be made by the Record Office, and details of the charters are included in this handlist as an appendix.
