58 The Medicalisation of Menopause in Early Modern English Medical and Popular Literature Anna Graham (Queen's University Belfast) The medicalisation of menopause is a practice that regulates the natural processes of the female body and treats any deviation from the expected normative function as a deficiency to be cured. The medicalisation of menopause is usually spoken about in reference to the practice of treating menopause with hormone replacement therapy (HRT). While hormone replacement therapy has been widely prescribed for menopause since the 1940s, the medicalisation of menopause became a major concern for feminist critics in the eighties and nineties when it was discovered that HRT had numerous negative side effects, yet was still being prescribed for something natural.1 While the medicalisation of menopause can therefore be seen as a relatively contemporary concern in feminist medical discourse, various scholars of the nineteenth century have engaged with how the evidence of our current modes of the medicalisation of menopause have developed through history.2 These scholars contend that our current modes of medicalising menopause draw on the sexist rhetoric of the Victorian period which framed women’s bodies as inherently dysfunctional. I argue that this narrative can be drawn back even further by considering how menopause was spoken about in the early modern period. 1 Madeleine Josephine Murtagh. ‘“Before Midnight she had Miscarried”: Women, Men and Miscarriage in Early Modern England’. Abstract Reproduction and Childbirth in the early modern era have sometimes been represented as a uniquely feminine experience. Similarly, studies of domestic medicine have in the past overlooked the role that men played in domestic health care practices. This article builds on recent work that resituates men within both of these discourses by considering the ways in which men understood, discussed and responded to the threat and occurrence of miscarriage in the women they knew. It considers a range of medical literature, spiritual diaries and letters to illuminate that men were a central feature of many women’s experiences of miscarriage. Introduction Miscarriage was an acknowledged danger for pregnant women in early modern England. It threatened not only the life of the developing foetus, but the woman’s future reproductive health and in some cases her life. Miscarriage was a common event which appears regularly in all genres of literature from life-writing to medical treatises. Miscarriages, or spontaneous abortions, were a familiar experience for many. As Raymond A. Anselment has noted, the threat of the loss of a foetus was far greater than that of maternal death in pregnancy.1 That it happened frequently did not lessen the fear and anxiety women experienced when faced with the prospect of losing their child, as is seen in a letter from Anna, Lady Meautys to her cousin Jane, Lady Cornwallis Bacon from March 1641: Now concerning myself, since the departure of my daughter I have been very dangerously ill. -

Cambridge University Press 0521581966 - Dowland: Lachrimae (1604) Peter Holman Excerpt More information 1 The document English music publishing Music publishing came late to England.1 While substantial trades devel- oped in Venice, Paris, Nuremberg and Antwerp in the first half of the sixteenth century, virtually no music was published in London until the 1570s, apart from liturgical books with plainsong and collections of met- rical psalms.It is not entirely clear why England lagged so far behind the Continent, though Queen Elizabeth tried to improve matters by grant- ing two monopolies, one in 1559 to John Day for psalm books, and the other in 1575 for twenty-one years to Thomas Tallis and William Byrd for polyphonic music.The latter covered ‘set songe or songes in partes, either in English, Latin, Frenche, Italian, or other tongues that may serve for musicke either in Church or chamber, or otherwise to be either plaid or soonge’, as well as ‘any paper to serve for printing or pricking any songe or songes’ and ‘any printed bokes or papers of any songe or songes, or any bookes or quieres of such ruled paper imprinted’.2 Tallis and Byrd used their monopoly to produce Cantiones quae ab argumento sacrae vocantur (1575), printed by Thomas Vautrollier, though it did not sell well and they appealed to Elizabeth in June 1577 for support, claiming they were out of pocket to the tune of at least 200 marks.Only two sets of part-books were issued before 1588, when Byrd, now sole holder, assigned it to the printer Thomas East.It was East who began -

Matrimony and Monarchy: The Failure of Bourbon-Habsburg Matrimonial Alliance Dr Samra Sarfraz Khan* Irum Iqbal Hussain** Abstract The research paper titled “Matrimony and Monarchy: The Failure of Bourbon-Habsburg Matrimonial Alliance,” is an in depth study of the matrimonial alliance between the Bourbon and Habsburg dynasties through the marriage of Louis XIV; the King of France, with the Spanish hieress Maria Theresa. This matrimonial alliance, which was arranged to start a new era of Franco-Spanish relations in the seventeenth century, was one of the many similar examples that had been followed in state craft from the earliest times. The paper serves a two-fold purpose: to bring to light the unsuccessful nature of this marriage, and to probe the various reasons for which the alliance was a failure in the very quintessence of a marriage. The paper highlights the factors that contributed in not only keeping the matrimonial alliance into a contentious relationship between Maria Theresa and Louis XIV but also in causing a decline in the political ties between the French and Spanish kingdoms. The research paper, thus, caters to an aspect in the study of matrimonial alliances that remains largely unexplored. RAMAZZINI - 300 YEARS OF OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE Arh Hig Rada Toksikol 2002;53:31-36 31 Review BERNARDINO RAMAZZINI’S DE MORBIS ARTIFICUM DIATRIBA OR THREE HUNDRED YEARS FROM THE BEGINNING OF MODERN OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE Ante ©KROBONJA and Ivica KONTO©I∆ Faculty of Medicine, University of Rijeka, Rijeka, Croatia Received December 2001 This review opens with the most important examples from the history of medicine until the end of the 17th century, which anticipated the affirmation of occupational medicine as separate medical discipline. The article remembers the famous Italian physician Bernardino Ramazzini (1633-1714) and his book De morbis artificum diatriba (Diseases of Workers) published in Modena in 1700 in which he described the effects of work on health for some fifty professions. By doing that, Ramazzini had laid scientific foundation to modern industrial hygiene, that is, today’s occupational medicine. The authors conclude that even 300 years after the first publication of Diatriba, Ramazzini is still relevant, and that it deserves much greater attention than it is given on occasions such as this year’s anniversary.
