This project will enlarge our understanding of the participation of women in the visual program of the Counter-Reformation in the Papal State of Bologna.1 The study focuses on Bologna since the city had an unprecedented large group of active women artists as well as being a crucial site of Catholic reform. Knowledge of Bologna’s women is still incomplete; therefore this dissertation is structured as a series of interlinked case studies, some of which rescue forgotten artists, while others add a new dimension to better-known figures. This research thus takes a necessarily broad approach, combining aspects of iconography, patronage, gender studies, and reception studies; it also integrates media neglected in previous studies such as prints and embroidery. The goal is to insert these artists into the larger philosophical and theoretical context of the city’s intellectual history, first by investigating the links between religion, science, and naturalism; and second, by unpacking critical terms from the historiography of style that came to bear on their work. Lastly, the project explores the city’s concern with women’s virtue, as it is a constant thread woven into visual imagery of all media, 1 The Papal States in the sixteenth century: Rome, Bologna, Ravenna, Rimini, and Umbria. iv from the sixteenth into the seventeenth century.     ELISABETTA SIRANI’S JUDITH WITH THE HEAD OF HOLOFERNES by JESSICA COLE RUBINSKI (Under the Direction of Shelley Zuraw) ABSTRACT This thesis examines the life and artistic career of the female artist, Elisabetta Sirani. The paper focuses on her unparalleled depictions of heroines, especially her Judith with the Head of Holofernes. By tracing the iconography of Judith from masters of the Renaissance into the mid- seventeenth century, it is evident that Elisabetta’s painting from 1658 is unique as it portrays Judith in her ultimate triumph. Furthermore, an emphasis is placed on the relationship between Elisabetta’s Judith and three of Guido Reni’s Judith images in terms of their visual resemblances, as well as their symbolic similarities through the incorporation of a starry sky and crescent moon.     Elisabetta Sirani Dipinti devozionali e “quadretti da letto” di una virtuosa del pennello L’idea del percorso tra questi dipinti nasce a seguito di un importante recupero realizzato dal Nucleo Carabinieri Tutela Patrimonio Culturale di Bologna: il ritrovamento sul mercato antiquario, grazie a una segnalazione del Museo, di un piccolo dipinto raffigurante la Vergine orante attribuito alla celebre pittrice bolognese Elisabetta Sirani (Bologna 1638-1665), la cui scomparsa dalla Pinacoteca di Bologna era stata denunciata da Enrico Mauceri nel 1930. L’esposizione del dipinto ritrovato diventa occasione per presentare al pubblico altri lavori dell’artista generalmente conservati nei depositi, spazi da non considerarsi soltanto incubatori di oggetti, ma come una fonte di ricche testimonianze di un passato intangibile, spesso celato e sconosciuto al pubblico per motivi conservativi. Si ha così l’occasione di scoprire la personalità innovativa di una delle principali protagoniste della storia della pittura del Seicento. Elisabetta Sirani nasce a Bologna nel 1638 da Margherita e Giovanni Andrea Sirani, allievo e diretto collaboratore di Guido Reni. Studiò la tradizione classica del divino maestro nella bottega del padre, grazie al quale entrò in contatto con il mercato e la committenza cittadina, a cui affidò le sue opere più importanti. Elisabetta iniziò fin da subito la sua carriera da pittrice, aprendo già all’età di ventiquattro anni una bottega molto frequentata, nella quale spiccava la presenza di numerose donne. Nonostante la sua breve vita – infatti morì a soli ventisette anni – Elisabetta viene ricordata già dallo storico contemporaneo Carlo Cesare Malvasia per le sue doti pittoriche: definita “virtuosa” per la rapidità del segno e la maestria nell’arte della pittura, veniva addirittura ammirata dai passanti che si fermavano davanti la sua bottega.

    XAVIER F. SALOMON APPOINTED PETER JAY SHARP CHIEF CURATOR OF THE FRICK COLLECTION Xavier F. Salomon has been appointed to the position of Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator of The Frick Collection, taking up the post in January of 2014. Dr. Salomon―who has organized exhibitions and published most particularly in the areas of Italian and Spanish art of the sixteenth through eighteenth century―comes to The Frick Collection from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he is a curator of in the Department of European Paintings. Previously, he was the Arturo and Holly Melosi Chief Curator of Dulwich Picture Gallery, London. Salomon’s two overall fields of expertise are the painter Paolo Veronese (1528–1588) and the collecting and patronage of cardinals in Rome during the early seventeenth century. Born in Rome, and raised in Italy and the United Kingdom, Salomon received his Ph.D. from the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London. A widely published author, essayist, and reviewer, Salomon sits on the Consultative Committee of The Burlington Magazine and is a member of the International Scientific Committee of Storia dell’Arte. Until now, however, these efforts have not extended to the field of music, and so the present study representsan initial attempt to understand the use of music in Werrn Europe's responseto epidemic plague from the beginning of the Black Death to the end of the sixteenth century. This involved an initial investigation of the description of sound in the earliest plague chronicles, and an identification of features of plague epidemics which had the potential to affect music-making (such as its geographical scope, recurrence of epidemics, and physical symptoms). The musical record from 1350-1600 was then examined for pieces which were conceivably written or performed during plague epidemics. While over sixty such pieces were found, only a small minority bore indications of specific liturgical use in time of plague. Rather, the majority of pieces (largely settings of the hymn Stella coeli extirpavit and of Italian laude whose diffusion was facilitated by the Franciscan order) hinted at a use of music in the everyday life of the laity which only occasionally resulted in the production of notated musical scores.

He attended classes at the Academy of Fine Arts only infrequently but nevertheless came into contact there with a group of young Florentine painters known as the ‘Macchiaioli’1. Their influence is seen in Boldini’s landscapes which show his spontaneous response to nature, although it is for his portraits that he became best known. Moving to London, he attained considerable success as a portraitist. From 1872 he lived in Paris, where in the late 19th century he became the city’s most fashionable portrait painter, with a dashing style of painting which shows some Macchiaioli influence and a brio reminiscent of the work of younger artists. Boldini held the work of the great sculptor and architect Bernini (1598-1680) in high regard. His admiration for Bernini almost certainly sprang from a spiritual rapprochement spontaneously triggered by a gift he received from the Uffizi in 1892 at the pinnacle of his international success. The museum had requested a self-portrait from him and in exchange he was offered a cast of Bernini’s portrait bust of Leopold de’ Medici.

Among the attributes of these women, masks of similar shapes, probably made of leather and equipped with rather expressionless faces, appear regularly. Art history has not yet analysed these half-length figures as a group with related charac­ teristics, neither in terms of style and picture size nor in terms of allegori­ cal meaning. Most scholars, as a matter of fact, have limited themselves to discussing just one example, the so­called Simulazione by Lorenzo Lippi (fig. 1) in the museum of Angers which has acquired a certain prominence after having been chosen to decorate the cover of the Seicento exhibition in Paris in 1988.' In Lippi's painting, a woman with a serious expression on her face confronts the spectator with two objects in her hands, a mask and a pomegranate.
