  • Artistic Fabrics, Unique Portraits (I)
33 OPEN SOURCE LANGUAGE VERSION > CATALÀ Artistic fabrics, unique portraits (I) by Sílvia Carbonell Basté Textil Museum and Documentation Centre PH.D. student Art History, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Photographs: ©CDMT, Quico Ortega Conserved in museums and private homes across Catalonia are a series of artistic fabrics – or woven artworks – that share many similarities with engravings and photographs but reflect a unique production technique popularised in a specific period in the history of the textile industry. These limited edition decorative fabrics generally feature portraits of illustrious figures (monarchs, politicians, military leaders, captains of industry), historical, religious or commemorative scenes, or reproductions of famous paintings, created in black and white silk on a Jacquard loom. In Catalonia, the majority of these fabrics were produced over the period between 1862 and 1974. These Jacquard pieces, originally referred to as artistic, or “singular”, fabrics, came to the museums from private owners who recognised their value in marking a crucial period in the transformation of the textile industry. The private collectors who donated the pieces all had a direct link of some sort to textile production, whether as teachers, theorists, merchants or artists. The fact that many of the fabrics bore the company name, the artist’s signature, the production date, or the name of the director and even the school at which they were plotted and weaved makes them, if nothing else, unique pieces, distinct from any other textile produced until that time and freely available on the market. These singular pieces also serve to illustrate the successful marriage of technology with the skill of the artist.

Diplomatic and Government Research Palacio: edificio monumental destinado a ser sede de actos públicos, como congresos, exposiciones y actos gubernamentales. Palace: official residence of a sovereign, archbishop, bishop, or other exalted person, stately or official home. HOTEL PALACIO PROVINCIAL § According to the NRHP*, the Old San Juan Historic District is the oldest European settlement in Puerto Rico and the United States and the second one continuously inhabited in the American continent. It is historically documented that the Viejo San Juan had the first municipal government in the America continent after the city of Santo Domingo in neighboring Hispaniola. § The Old San Juan Historic District’s distribution and organization of the urban core by means of an HOTEL PALACIO orthogonal grid was inspired by European Renaissance ideas, particularly Italian of Classical PROVINCIAL extraction. § The Old San Juan Historic District has the oldest house, Christian temple, executive mansion, convent and military defenses in the United States. All of these structures can be found within this unique core that includes the Diputación Provincial building. *National Register of Historic Places To this day, the square bordering the Plaza de Armas is considered the heart of Old San Juan. In addition to this symbolic role as center of the urban core, the space continues to anchor the seats of both the island-wide and municipal governments, something it has done since the 17th century. By the 19th century and although the Spanish monarchy was not organized into independent branches (i e executive, legislative, and judicial), all the buildings relevant to the administration of the city and the island – Casa Alcaldiá , Real Intendencia and Diputacioń Provincial – were located around this neuralgic square.

  • Press Kit Lille 2016
www.lilletourism.com PRESS KIT LILLE 2016 ALL YOU NEED IS LILLE Press Release Just 80 minutes away from London, 1 hour from Paris and 35 minutes from Brussels, Lille could quite easily have melted into the shadows of its illustrious neighbours, but instead it is more than happy to cultivate and show off all that makes it stand out from the crowd! Flemish, Burgundian and then Spanish before it became French, Lille boasts a spectacular heritage. A trading town since the Middle Ages, a stronghold under Louis XIV, a hive of industry in the 19th century and an ambitious hub in the 20th century, Lille is now imbued with the memories of the past, interweaved with its visions for the future. While the Euralille area is a focal point of bold architecture by Rem Koolhaas, Jean Nouvel or Christian de Portzamparc, the Lille-Sud area is becoming a Mecca for fashionistas. Since 2007, some young fashion designers (sponsored by Agnès b.) have set up workshops and boutiques in this new “fashion district” in the making. With lille3000, it’s the whole city that has started to look towards the future, enjoying a dramatic makeover for this new recurrent event, geared towards contemporary art and innovation. The European Capital of Culture in 2004, Lille is now a leading light in this field, with the arts ma- king themselves quite at home here. From great museums to new alternative art centres, from the Opera to the theatres through the National Or- chestra, culture is a living and breathing part of everyday life here.

XXXIII JULY, 1958 NO.3 ADRIAN WOLL: FRENCHMAN IN THE MEXICAN MILITARY SERVICE By JOSEPH MILTON NANCE* HIS is a biographical sketch of a rather prominent and T influential "soldier of fortune" whose integrity, honesty, attention to duty, and gentlemanly conduct most Texans of the days of the Republic respected, even if they disliked the government he so often represented. Adrian Won was born a Frenchman on December 2, 1795, in St. Germain-en-Laye, near Paris, and educated for the military profession. He served under the First Empire as a lieutenant of a regiment of lancers of the imperial guard.1 Since his regiment was composed largely of Poles, won has sometimes mistakenly been represented as being of Polish nationality. In 1815 he was captain adjutant major in the 10th Legion of the National Guard of the Seine.2 Upon the restoration of the Bourbons in France, won went to New York, thence to Baltimore, Maryland, with letters of intro duction to General Winfield Scott who befriended him and, no doubt, pointed out to him the wonderful opportunities offered by the revolutionary disturbances in Mexico to a young man of energy, skilled in the arts of a soldier.

And this makes it of the first importance that the facts from which that usage and practice are to be deduced should be correctly appre- ciated, and in particular that the great treaties which have regulated the status and territorial rights of nations should be studied from the point of view of history and international law. It is the object of this book to present materials for that study in an accessible form. The scope of the book is limited, and wisely limited, to treaties between the nations of Europe, and to treaties between those nations from 1815 onwards. To include all treaties affecting all nations would require volumes nor is it for the many ; necessary, purpose of obtaining a sufficient insight into the history and usage of European States on such matters as those to which these treaties relate, to go further back than the settlement which resulted from the Napoleonic wars.
