We believe it is both valuable and necessary that these transformation projects, which involve individuals who take part in the academic process and who are concerned with studio education, should also be dealt with in the architectural education process. Formed out of this idea, the “architectural design studio” was conceived with the aim of enabling students to “re-think” the above concepts and, by creating various projects in this context, of increasing their “internalisation” and “awareness” of the subject. This is the case not only for the Historical Peninsula of Istanbul but also Galata, which is the former capital's an- other ancient district opposite the Golden Horn. Accordingly, Arap Mosque is perhaps the most renowned example to this issue that it shares the same location with two former churches from the Byzantine and Genoese periods. While similar origins of other monuments in Galata like Yeni Mosque have also been discussed by scholars, those cases lacked elaboration from a more comprehensive urban perspective. Following a historical research methodology for specific ur- ban aims, it was seen that spatial connections between the shrines of Galata from its Byzantine, Genoese and Ottoman periods are even stronger on the same plots, which better display a spatial continuity within a historical urban layout for centuries. Moreover, it can be seen that even if a sacred place had a new function, some certain traces still reveal its origins, which stress the multilayered ancient settlement. Dr. Mehmet Fat h YAVUZ 1 Abstract Commanding the Bosporos, Byzantion was located in one of the most strategic locations in the ancient Mediterranean world. We do not know exactly where its territories extended in the west. But in the north, Byzantine khora extended as far as the Pontic mouth of the Bosporos. Furthermore the Byzantines at times clashed with the Bithynians and halkedonians to control the Asian side of the Bosporos. The Byzantines thus built several sanctuaries along the shores of the Bosporos to declare their sovereignty visually to all. Also, Byzantion and the waters around it were quite rich fish grounds (esp. Bosporos and eras), and strategic maritime highways (Propontis, Bosporos) and harbors ( eras). Fishermen and sailors must have built sanctuaries to offer sacrifices to deities in order to ward off dangers and offer thanks. The Western Roman Emperor was deposed and the position left vacant. The governing of Italy fell on Germanic warlords, both subordinate to and independent of the Emperor in Constantinople whose attentions were focused on political intrigue and wars, both civil and foreign. A schism in the Church further reduced his influence. This left a void of leadership for the people of Rome. The remaining Emperor was now far away, and the secular leadership of Italy in the hands of foreigners and not members of the Catholic Church. The bishops of Rome began to fill that void, though not without controversy and resistance. He was able to use his moral authority, and his important political position to form the beginnings of independent political authority. The temporal reality of this independence would vanish with the end of the Acacian Schism and the conquest of Rome by Emperor Justinian in 536AD. This part of modern Beyoğlu especially came to the forefront with its prosperous Genoese period, which lasted between 1267-1453. Although Galata had a significant urban and architectural development during that period, there are solid evidence and recent discoveries regarding the phenomenon of spatial continuity. In this regard, it was seen that the Genoese did not found Galata as a colonial settlement from scratch but in fact possessed a well urbanized Byzantine district. In order to display the urban layout of its previous centuries, Galata was formerly subjected to some mapping attempts but few of them were able to accurately detect spatial continuities as well as discontinuities between different historical periods of this neighborhood. Hence, those efforts remained rather inconclusive from an urban point of view. Main reasons behind this failure can be given as the lack of an interdisciplin- ary approach and proper knowledge of urban morphology. Therefore, this article aims to improve the aforementioned research within the context of discovering the ancient road and water system; and to set a wider spatial connection between the late antiquity and medieval periods of Galata in comparison with modern times.

Günümüze aktarılan bu kentler özellikle Roma ve Bizans devirlerinde limanların Akdeniz ticaret rotalarını oluşturduğu kıtalar arası bir karşılıklı bağlantıya ulaşmıştır. Makalede konu alınan coğrafyacı, tarihçi / tarih yazarı, seyyah, hidrolog, gibi çeşitli alanlardaki bilim insanlarının ve yazarların notları irdelendiğinde Roma ve Bizans limanlarıyla ilgili olarak bu limanların kullanıldıkları dönemde taşıdıkları özellikler ve yapısal bakımdan kanıtları belirlenmektedir. Bunların yanı sıra imparatorların liman yapılarına verdikleri değer, inşa edilen limanlar ve yapılan restorasyonlar ile ilgili kayıtlar da sunulmaktadır. Yüzyıllar içinde belirli alanlarda (liman konusundan yola çıkılarak) ortak terimler ve tanımlamalar kullanılmıştır. Bu eğilim tarih yazımı alanında çağlar arasında aktarımı sağlanmış bir dile örnek oluşturmaktadır. Anahtar Kelimeler: Liman, Bizans, Roma, tarih yazarı. The discovery of the Roman and Byzantine sites has importance for the identification, the location and structural status of these cities or settlements during their written period. These cities, which are transferred to the present day, have created a mutual connection which has been reached through the Mediterranean ports, especially in the Roman and Byzantine eras.
