• Illustration Thesis Project Research is one of two required Thesis couses involving scholarly research--reading, writing and sketching toward in depth knowledge and creative expression around a topic of choice.

• Illustration Thesis Project Image making is the partner thesis course where research becomes visual and results in a substantial body of work, a bound graphic summary and a gallery exhibition.

The Thesis Project is the central spine of the Illustration curriculum, where students are expected to confront and develop their personal voice and passion in a concentrated and highly meaningful way. Their graphic summaries include their essential research, a comprehensive body of work and an artist statement that provide a springboard for moving forward as professionals.

Karla Crowell • Senior Illustration allows students to focus on their individual interests, tailored toward specific areas. Students are exposed to a range of guest speakers, high illustration competitions, and other professional opportunities.

• Senior Illustration Portfolio covers all aspects of packaging, networking, business and self- promotion aimed at specific illustration markets and creative application of unique skills. Developing a reliable professional studio practice is fostered Ellie Norton through example and advice from panel presentations.

We believe the sketchbook is where everything happens.

Open Drawing Each semester, the Illustration department provides approximately 30 hours of model drawing beyond class times, open to all members of the college community. In addition to scheduled models, students model for each other, in costumes or wearing masks during special drawing sessions.

Noodle and Doodle Sessions Kristen Uroda Students are invited to model while playing (acoustic) guitars or other instruments during evening drawing sessions. Drawing practice and good music - a great combo!

Faculty and Student Sketchbook Exhibits Whenever possible, we organize both formal and informal faculty and student sketchbook shows.

Sherwin Long Studio Space & Reviews 9th Floor Studios The hub of daily activity, the 9th floor houses our student studio spaces and studio classrooms in addition to computers, cutters, a dry mount press, printing-making press, a type lab, an open drawing area, and areas to socialize. This is where end-of- semester reviews take place and where Illustration students work late into the evenings, building a lively community with students from and Animation. All questions regarding the 9th floor studio should be sent to Luanne Witkowski- [email protected]

End of Semester Reviews Each Illustration major is reviewed each semester. Reviews are advisory in nature; they do not impact course grades. They provide an opportunity for students to see their entire semester’s effort next to their peers, and to receive written feedback from three faculty members or professional reviewers. The final review for Seniors is a professional portfolio review.
