Over the last few decades, a growing concern about linguistic diversity in the world has led to an increasing awareness of minority languages, which are endangered by loss. The concept of language revitalisation calls for work which will affect the vitality of these languages. The nature of these revitalisation efforts is inscribed into place-related processes and the interpretations of the relationships between language speakers and the place they live in. Sound recordings can afford language revitalisation with the restoration of sounds of languages. This thesis argues that the heart of language revitalisation lies in the re-sounding of place attachment and sense of place. The selection of the two language cases studies, which allow for the multi-faceted use of sound recordings to be revealed and understood, constitutes an important part in the search for an understanding of these interconnections. Based on these two language case studies, which contrast in degrees of language endangerment, this research analyses how and why sound recordings engage in the processes of language revitalisation. Qualitative methods of research, encompassing forty one semi-structured and episodic interviews conducted in Japan and the Netherlands along with observations and secondary data analysis, were used in this study. The comparative approach revealed similarities and differences in the revitalisation of the Ainu and West Frisian languages and the practices of using sound recordings. Importantly, this thesis demonstrates that the significance of sound recordings arise from their capability of creating aural experience of the language, which empowers both processes of language revitalisation with the restoration of place attachment and sense of place. This finding represents a key contribution to the research of linguistic and geographical knowledge about the revitalisation of endangered languages, the role of technology in language revitalisation and to the debate on saving linguistic and cultural diversity in the world. ii Contents List of Tables Dan Jurafsky iii iv Abstract This thesis is a study of nominal possessive constructions in modern Low Saxon, a West Germanic language which is closely related to Dutch, Frisian, and German. After identifying the possessive constructions in current use in modern Low Saxon, I give a formal syntactic analysis of the four most common possessive constructions within the framework of Lexical Functional Grammar in the ¯rst part of this thesis. The four constructions that I will analyze in detail include a pronominal possessive construction with a possessive pronoun used as a determiner of the head noun, another prenominal construction that resembles the English s-possessive, a linker construction in which a possessive pronoun occurs as a possessive marker in between a prenominal possessor phrase and the head noun, and a postnominal construction that involves the preposition van/von/vun and is largely parallel to the English of -possessive.

    The Fight for Self-Representation: Ainu Imaginary, Ethnicity and Assimilation Marcos P. Centeno Martín Abstract: Film representation of the Ainu people is as old as cinema but it has not remained stable over time. From the origins of cinema, Ainu people were an object of interest for Japanese and foreign explorers who portrayed them as an Other, savage and isolated from the modern world. The notion of “otherness” was slightly modified during wartime, as the Ainu were represented as Japanese subjects within the “imperial family”, and at the end of the fifties when entertainment cinema presented the Ainu according to the codes of the Hollywood Western on the one hand; and Mikio Naruse proposed a new portrayal focusing on the Ainu as a long-discriminated social collective rather than as an ethnic group, on the other. However, Tadayoshi Himeda’s series of seven documentaries following the Ainu leader Shigeru Kayano’s activities marked a significant shift in Ainu iconography. Himeda challenged both the postwar institutional discourse on the inexistence of minorities in Japan, and the touristic and ahistorical image that concealed the Ainu’s cultural assimilation to Japanese culture. The proposed films do not try to show an exotic people but a conventional people struggling to recover their collective past. Shifts in Ainu Film Representations The relationship between film and the Ainu people is as old as cinema. They are featured in The Ainu in Yeso (Les Aïnous à Yéso, 1897), which are two of the first thirty-three cinematographic sequences shot in Japan as part of the actualités filmed by the French operator François-Constant Girel for a Lumière brothers catalogue.

Vriends University of Stellenbosch 1 Introduction In his Morphosyntax of verb movement: a minimalist approach to the syntax of Dutch (1997) zwart argues for an alternative analysis to the traditional analysis2 of the word order variation that exists in West Gennanic subject initial main clauses and embedded clauses. This alternative analysis is a heavily revised version of the one Zwart presented in his 1993 dissertation. The revised version focuses on a smaller section of Dutch syntax than the preceding work and revolves crucially around a proposal of feature movement and the interaction between syntax and morphology. It also deviates from the traditional analysis in the assumption that the underlying word order for Dutch is SVO and that all functional projections are head initial. Zwart (1997) furthermore claims that the analysis presented for Dutch can be carried over to the other West Germanic languages. At least one of these languages, Afrikaans, is not discussed by Zwart and my main interest in this article is to see whether Zwart's proposed analysis holds when applied to this language. 2 A minimalist analysis of verb movement We will now familiarise ourselves with the relevant parts of Zwart's (1997) analysis of verb movement asymmetry in Germanic languages. First we will look at the assumptions Zwart makes for the underlying word order and the position of the heads in Dutch. Then we will look at the phenomenon of double (complementiser) agreement, which provides the empirical argument for Zwart to assume the existence of AgrS-to-C movement.

Minority-Language Related Broadcasting and Legislation in the OSCE Abstract There are a large number of language-related regulations (both prescriptive and proscriptive) that affect the shape of the broadcasting media and therefore have an impact on the life of persons belonging to minorities. Of course, language has been and remains an important instrument in State-building and maintenance. In this context, requirements have also been put in place to accommodate national minorities. In some settings, there is legislation to assure availability of programming in minority languages.1 Language rules have also been manipulated for restrictive, sometimes punitive ends. A language can become or be made a focus of loyalty for a minority community that thinks itself suppressed, persecuted, or subjected to discrimination. Regulations relating to broadcasting may make language a target for attack or suppression if the authorities associate it with what they consider a disaffected or secessionist group or even just a culturally inferior one.

The corpus contains original recordings from 1982-1984 and a replication study recorded 35 years later. The data collection spans speech of four generations, and combines panel and trend data. This paper describes the Boarnsterhim Corpus halfway the project which started in 2016 and describes the way it was collected, the annotations, potential use, and the envisaged tools and end-user web application. When asked what these new media might be ca lied in Frisian, the answers internet and e-mail are hardly surprising. We can see that both Fryslän and the Frisian language are also tak­ ing part in the digitalisation of the world. New concepts, new words in tech­ nology retain their original Anglo-American names in most European lan­ guages. This paper will deal with the process of developing and renewing the Frisian lexicon. But first I am going to give a brief introduction to Fryslän itself. Fryslän is one ofthe twelve provinces ofthe kingdom ofthe Netherlands and is situated in the northem part ofthe country. Fryslän is a flat province, much of its territory being below sea level. It is protected trom the sea by dikes. The capitalof Fryslän is Ljouwert, or Leeuwarden, as it is known in Dutch. In the past, Fryslän was an agricultural pro vin ce with more cattle living there than people. Nowadays farming still plays an important role in Fryslän's economy, but both the service industries and industry itself have also become important. Fryslän has a population of about 600,000 and approximately 55% of them consider Frisian to be their first language. While about 74% of the population claim that they can speak Frisian, 94% say that they can understand it when it is spoken, 65% claim that they can read Frisian, but only 17% say that they can write it (Gorter & Jonkman 1995:9-11).

In the past, Westerlauwers Friesland was already inhabited by a multilingual population, including speakers of local Frisian and non- Frisian vernaculars, the Dutch standard language and etnolects of foreign origin like those of German harvesters and Jewish merchants. Frisian literature reflects this multilingual situation to some extent. The details of it have yet to be studied in a systematic way, however. This case-study exemplifies how Jews were characterized in Frisian literature, especially drama. It turns out that the stereotypical Jewish char- acter is presented as speaking a variety of artificial and real languages. This study sheds some light on the question of how literature relates to reality, prejudice and language. Atlases 9. References 1. Introduction The beginnings and growth of dialectology in the Netherlands and Flanders can only be discussed against the background of the situation in neighboring countries. In reaction to the Enlightenment, the Romantic period brought with it an interest in and apprecia- tion of prescientific culture and nostalgia for the past. More attention came to be paid to art, myths, fairy tales and the language of ordinary people past and present, as op- posed to the Enlightenment period interest in cultured standard language. The new focus was imported from the France of Rousseau and the Germany of Schiller. But later devel- opments in the Netherlands and Flanders did not take place in isolation either. Thus, the German linguist Georg Wenker and his French colleague Jules Gillie´ron were the unmistakable precursors of Dutch linguistic atlas projects, while the work of Jean Se´guy and of Hans Goebl served as models for dialectometry in our region. In section 2 of this chapter, we take a brief look at prescientific linguistic maps and dialect collections. In section 3, dialect surveys that have not been developed into linguis- tic atlases are discussed.
