Authors such as Palladius anonymous editors Geoponika was those who transmitted the ideas and solutions that tarantinos gave in their articles. His ideas are expressed in the texts of these authors are quoted integrally, or are recounted original solutions. In this way they extend the life of Tarantinos texts, which are now lost in the original. In Palladius work is three texts that relate to improving the taste and quality of olive oil. In Geoponika of fourteen heads, which are thought to have been taken from Tarantinos work. Theme head is varied. Texts relating to agriculture, viticulture and winemaking, cultivation of olive trees, the grafting and planting of fruit and flowers, and on fisheries. Studying Tarantinos these texts were published by the Palladius in his work “On agriculture” in the original “Opus Agriculturae” but in Geoponika we can conclude the following. If you werePalladius and anonymous editor Geoponika only known authors who have used the original Tarantinos work. Since we cannot have access to the original Tarantinoso work we cannot determine whether his work is directly quoted. Also we cannot determine the authenticity of some heads was the organizer Geoponika attributed tarantinos. Yet despite all that remained preserved some thoughts and ideas that tarantinos made in his lost work, primarily thanks to the Palladius and anonymous editors Geoponika. Introduction The influence of Tarantinos texts on ekonomic thought in the agriculture of the Roman Empire and later the Byzantine Empire was definitely there. Authors for whom we can safely say that they used Tarantinos work on agriculture were Palladius who worked in the fifth century and the anonymous editor of Byzantine encyclopedias on agriculture, which made the compilation of this part of the X century. These two authors have passed some ideas and solutions that Tarantinos wrote in his book that he wrote to us in its original form other losses. Agroeconomic thoughts that are expressed in Tarantinos work of these authors are quoted integrally, or are recounted his decision. Tarantinos work together with the work of other agroeconomic writers that created since the time of ancient Greece and the Roman Empire downloaded and added by the text editor Byzantine agricultural encyclopedias Geoponika. Van Dam Associate Professor Diane Owen Hughes © Alexander Borislavov Angelov 2011 To my mother Irina with all my love and gratitude ii Acknowledgements To put in words deepest feelings of gratitude to so many people and for so many things is to reflect on various encounters and influences. In a sense, it is to sketch out a singular narrative but of many personal “conversions.” So now, being here, I am looking back, and it all seems so clear and obvious. But, it is the historian in me that realizes best the numerous situations, emotions, and dilemmas that brought me where I am. I feel so profoundly thankful for a journey that even I, obsessed with planning, could not have fully anticipated. In a final analysis, as my dissertation grew so did I, but neither could have become better without the presence of the people or the institutions that I feel so fortunate to be able to acknowledge here. At the University of Michigan, I first thank my mentor John Fine for his tremendous academic support over the years, for his friendship always present when most needed, and for best illustrating to me how true knowledge does in fact produce better humanity.

  • The Cambridge Companion to Age of Constantine.Pdf
The Cambridge Companion to THE AGE OF CONSTANTINE S The Cambridge Companion to the Age of Constantine offers students a com- prehensive one-volume introduction to this pivotal emperor and his times. Richly illustrated and designed as a readable survey accessible to all audiences, it also achieves a level of scholarly sophistication and a freshness of interpretation that will be welcomed by the experts. The volume is divided into five sections that examine political history, reli- gion, social and economic history, art, and foreign relations during the reign of Constantine, a ruler who gains in importance because he steered the Roman Empire on a course parallel with his own personal develop- ment. Each chapter examines the intimate interplay between emperor and empire and between a powerful personality and his world. Collec- tively, the chapters show how both were mutually affected in ways that shaped the world of late antiquity and even affect our own world today. Noel Lenski is Associate Professor of Classics at the University of Colorado, Boulder. A specialist in the history of late antiquity, he is the author of numerous articles on military, political, cultural, and social history and the monograph Failure of Empire: Valens and the Roman State in the Fourth Century ad. • Calendar of Roman Events
Introduction Steve Worboys and I began this calendar in 1980 or 1981 when we discovered that the exact dates of many events survive from Roman antiquity, the most famous being the ides of March murder of Caesar. Flipping through a few books on Roman history revealed a handful of dates, and we believed that to fill every day of the year would certainly be impossible. From 1981 until 1989 I kept the calendar, adding dates as I ran across them. In 1989 I typed the list into the computer and we began again to plunder books and journals for dates, this time recording sources. Since then I have worked and reworked the Calendar, revising old entries and adding many, many more. The Roman Calendar The calendar was reformed twice, once by Caesar in 46 BC and later by Augustus in 8 BC. Each of these reforms is described in A. K. Michels’ book The Calendar of the Roman Republic. In an ordinary pre-Julian year, the number of days in each month was as follows: 29 January 31 May 29 September 28 February 29 June 31 October 31 March 31 Quintilis (July) 29 November 29 April 29 Sextilis (August) 29 December. The Romans did not number the days of the months consecutively. They reckoned backwards from three fixed points: The kalends, the nones, and the ides. The kalends is the first day of the month. For months with 31 days the nones fall on the 7th and the ides the 15th. For other months the nones fall on the 5th and the ides on the 13th.

Book XI. Title LXX. (LXIX.) Concerning the different urban and rural estates of the temples and cities and concerning the municipal income. (De diversis praediis urbanis et rusticis templorum et civitatum et omni reditu civili.) 11.70.1. Emperor Julian to Atarbinus. For the buildings which persons have erected on public ground, they shall be compelled to pay an agreed rental. Note. Municipalities rented out public places for shops, etc., and derived considerable revenue therefrom. C. 8.11.19 and note. 11.70.2. The same Emperor to Secundus, Praetorian Prefect. The cities of Pomphylia and all other cities may firmly hold whatever property they acquire for themselves. 11.70.3. Emperors Arcadius and Honorius to Hadrianus, Count of the Imperial Exchequer. It is certain that a third of the rental (canon) which is annually paid for the places and lands of the city should suffice for the restoration of the public walls. Given August 6 (395). C. Th. 5.13.35. Note. A provision similar to the instant law is found in C. 8.11.11 where 'canon,' however, is called 'reditus,' showing that 'canon' in the instant law meant rental. That law related to the Western portion of the empire. Lands belonging to cities had gradually been appropriated by the emperors, and finally they received only a third of the income from the lands that were left. It seems that among these lands, those formerly belonging to the heathen temples were counted. See His, Domanen 37-41. 11.70.4. The same Emperors to Caesarius, Praetorian Prefect. We order that persons who have or shall become possessors of patrimonial estates or (former) estates of the (heathen) temples on first bid shall hold the property in firm ownership, so that no such person's possession may thereafter be uncertain, but hold as his own the property which has been or shall be confirmed in him upon the payment of the price.

  • Byzantine Names for SCA Personae
1 A Short (and rough) Guide to Byzantine Names for SCA personae This is a listing of names that may be useful for constructing Byzantine persona. Having said that, please note that the term „Byzantine‟ is one that was not used in the time of the Empire. They referred to themselves as Romans. Please also note that this is compiled by a non-historian and non-linguist. When errors are detected, please let me know so that I can correct them. Additional material is always welcomed. It is a work in progress and will be added to as I have time to research more books. This is the second major revision and the number of errors picked up is legion. If you have an earlier copy throw it away now. Some names of barbarians who became citizens are included. Names from „client states‟ such as Serbia and Bosnia, as well as adversaries, can be found in my other article called Names for other Eastern Cultures. In itself it is not sufficient documentation for heraldic submission, but it will give you ideas and tell you where to start looking. The use of (?) means that either I have nothing that gives me an idea, or that I am not sure of what I have. If there are alternatives given of „c‟, „x‟ and „k‟ modern scholarship prefers the „k‟. „K‟ is closer to the original in both spelling and pronunciation. WEST AS A MARK OF REGARD PREFACE This work deals with the life and legend of Zoroaster, the Prophet of Ancient Iran, the representative and type of the laws of the Medes and Persians, the Master whose teaching the Parsis to-day still faithfully follow. It is a biographical study based on tradition ; tradition is a phase of history, and it is the purpose of the volume to present the picture of Zoroaster as far as possible in its historic light. The suggestion which first inspired me to deal with this special theme came from my friend and teacher. Professor Geldner of Berlin, at the time when I was a student under him, ten years ago, at the University of Halle in Germany, and when he was lecturing for the term upon the life and teachings of Zoroaster.

THE FOLKLORE OF THE GEOPONICA. THERE has come down to us from the tenth century A.D. a curious and interesting collection of precepts on farming and other country pursuits, including stock-breeding and fishing, collectively known as the Geoponica. As it stands it is the work of some Byzantine, who dedicated it to a certain "most righteous emperor Konstantinos," apparently that mild and amiable, if not very able monarch Constantine VII, Porphyrogennetos. The dedication was therefore written somewhere in the neighbourhood of 950. But the editor's work was little more than a moderate use of the Byzantine equivalent of scissors and paste, and even in that he had been preceded by one Cassianus Bassus, who in the sixth century compiled what he called up yepyCas' EKXOyaL,or extracts on agriculture, which he dedicated to his son.
