This group of genera has its highest diversity in the Irano-Turanian region and the mountains of Central Asia. We generated ITS and rpS4-trnT-trnL sequences for altogether 138 species, including 129 (of ca. 600) species of Cousinia. As found in previous analyses, Cousinia is not monophyletic. Instead, Cousinia subgg. Cynaroides and Hypacanthodes with together ca. 30 species are more closely related to Arctium, Hypacanthium and Schmalhausenia (Arc- tioid clade) than to subg. Cousinia (Cousinioid clade). The Arctioid and Cousiniod clades are also supported by pollen morphology and chromosome number as reported earlier. In the Arctioid clade, the distribution of morphological characters important for generic delimitation, mainly leaf shape and armature and morphology of involucral bracts, are highly incongruent with phylogenetic relationships as implied by the molecular data.

Vegetation dynamics and restoration trials in limestone quarries: the Botticino case study (Brescia, Italy) Federica Gilardelli UNIVERSITÀ DEGLI STUDI DI MILANO – BICOCCA Facoltà di Scienze Matematiche, Fisiche e Naturali Vegetation dynamics and restoration trials in limestone quarries: the Botticino case study (Brescia, Italy) Federica Gilardelli PhD thesis in Environmental Science XXV cycle Tutor: Cotutors: Prof. Sandra Citterio Prof. Sergio Sgorbati Dr. Rodolfo Gentili Dr. Stefano Armiraglio Collaborations: Dr. Ing. Sergio Savoldi Dr. Pierangelo Barossi February 2013 To all the quarrymen and their families. A tutti i cavatori e le loro famiglie. Background. All over the world, the naturalistic restoration of abandoned quarry areas represents a real challenge because of the very adverse initial site conditions for plant species colonization. In order to identify the best restoration practices, the present thesis considered, as a case study, the “Botticino extractive basin” (Lombardy, Italy), that is today the second greatest Italian extractive basin and it is famous worldwide for the limestone extraction. In particular, the thesis proposes a multidisciplinary approach based on the study of the local vegetation dynamics, laboratory tests, plant selection for restoration and field experiments to test different restoration techniques. Methods. Spontaneous vegetation dynamics over the whole extractive basin was studied by an ecological approach through 108 plots, that were carried out on surfaces whose “disused time” from quarry abandonment was known; data were analysed by cluster analysis and Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) and compared to the available data on grassland and woodlands related to the study area. We identified successional phases according to the trend of the most common species whose cover significantly increases or decreases with time.

Since 1982 when the last review of the genus was published by Brian Mathew many new taxa were found and work dealing with special parameters of Crocus, like the Calcium-oxalate crystals in the corm tunics, were published. Introducing molecular-systematic analyses to the genus brought a completely new understanding of Crocus that presents itself now far away from being small and easy-structured. This work was initiated by the idea that a detailed study accompanied by drawings and photographs is necessary to widen and sharpen the view for the important details of the genus. Therefore we look at the life-cycle of the plants as well as at important morphological and phenotypical characteristics of Crocus. Especially important to us is the explained determination of relevant taxonomical parameters which are necessary for a mistake-free identification of the rapidly increasing numbers of discovered species and for the creation of determination keys. Zusammenfassung: Die Gattung Crocus wird seit mehr als 30 Jahren von den Autoren sowohl in der Natur als auch in Kultur studiert.

We stopped en route at the Abbadia Di Fiastra Nature Reserve for an exploration and refreshments. After a coffee and soft drink, we undertook a walk around the perimeter of the park. Several bright green Italian Wall Lizards scuttled across the path and posed unconcernedly on the margins as we made our slow passage past. Numerous singing Blackcaps could be heard, joined by a couple of Nightingales deep within the woodland scrub. The pleasant purring sounds of a few Turtle Doves were joined by the melodious calls of a Golden Oriole, both of which eluded sighting. The temperature along the track was becoming oppressive and, joined with our slow progress, brought about the decision to retreat to the Monastery buildings and a light lunch! Whilst we ate we were able to enjoy the vibrant House Martin colony on the buildings with the Tree Sparrows and Common Redstarts on the rooftops and gutters.

Federico Selvi A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy) Abstract Selvi, F.: A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy). — Fl. Medit. 20: 47-139. 2010. — ISSN 1120-4052. The Tuscan Maremma is a historical region of central western Italy of remarkable ecological and landscape value, with a surface of about 4.420 km2 largely corresponding to the province of Grosseto. A critical inventory of the native and naturalized vascular plant species growing in this territory is here presented, based on over twenty years of author's collections and study of relevant herbarium materials and literature. The checklist includes 2.056 species and subspecies (excluding orchid hybrids), of which, however, 49 should be excluded, 67 need confirmation and 15 have most probably desappeared during the last century. Considering the 1.925 con- firmed taxa only, this area is home of about 25% of the Italian flora though representing only 1.5% of the national surface. The main phytogeographical features in terms of life-form distri- bution, chorological types, endemic species and taxa of particular conservation relevance are presented. Species not previously recorded from Tuscany are: Anthoxanthum ovatum Lag., Cardamine amporitana Sennen & Pau, Hieracium glaucinum Jord., H. maranzae (Murr & Zahn) Prain (H. neoplatyphyllum Gottschl.), H. murorum subsp. tenuiflorum (A.-T.) Schinz & R. Keller, H. vasconicum Martrin-Donos, Onobrychis arenaria (Kit.) DC., Typha domingensis (Pers.) Steud., Vicia loiseleurii (M. Bieb) Litv. and the exotic Oenothera speciosa Nutt. Key words: Flora, Phytogeography, Taxonomy, Tuscan Maremma. Introduction Inhabited by man since millennia and cradle of the Etruscan civilization, Maremma is a historical region of central-western Italy that stretches, in its broadest sense, from south- ern Tuscany to northern Latium in the provinces of Pisa, Livorno, Grosseto and Viterbo.

New Year and new gardening season comes and my new catalogue goes to you. It is a little shorter than usually - not for shortage of items includable (with pain in heart I striped out many names) but this summer I want to rebuild my bulb shed and it will limit my possibilities to harvest bulbs and to work with them. Last summer was very busy year. I rebuilt one of my greenhouses - it was very nervous process due shortage of workers (three teams were changed), I was forced to dig out all bulbs, to change soil - but now working in it is much more comfortable. I and my wife Guna organized for the first time “Open door days” and we had 18 visitors from Britain, arranged programm including lectures, visits of gardens, museum, nature, Opera etc. All visitors were very satisfied with visit. Sorry, this season we can’t to arrange OPEN DOOR DAYS due my lecture tour in North America and expedition plans. But I’m planning repeat such days in future, too. Last season Mrs. Kristl Walek from Canada (Gardens North – Seeds from the world) in her catalogue revealed the fact that I had been bearing in my mind an idea about a book on bulbs and my experience with them.
