Rosalia Handbooks ROSALIA Handbooks ROSALIA Handbooks Practical Experiences in Invasive Alien Plant Control Invasive plant species pose major agricultural, silvicultural, human health and ecological problems worldwide, and are considered the most signifi cant threat for nature conservation. Species invading natural areas in Hungary have been described by a number of books published in the Practical Experiences in Invasive Alien Plant Control last few years. A great amount of experience has been gathered about the control of these species in some areas, which we can read about in an increasing number of articles; however, no book has been published with regards to the whole country. Invasions affecting larger areas require high energy and cost input, and the effectiveness and successfulness of control can be infl uenced by a number of factors. The development of effective, widely applicable control and eradication technologies is preceded by experiments and examinations which are based on a lot of practical experience and often loaded with negative experiences. National park directorates, forest and agricultural managers and NGOs in many parts of Hungary are combatting the spread of invasive species; however, the exchange of information and conclusion of experiences among the managing bodies is indispensable. The aim of the present volume is to facilitate this by summarizing experiences and the methods applied in practice; which, we hope, will enable us to successfully stop the further spread of invasive plant species and effectively protect our natural values. Hungary-Slovakia Cross-border Co-operation Programme 2007-2013 Duna-Ipoly National Park Directorate Financial support for this manual has been provided by “Unified protection against invasive alien plants in sand and floodplain habitats” project. The aim of this project was to control invasive alien species (IAS) in sand and floodplain areas of Hungary and Slovakia, between 2012 and 2014. Duna-Ipoly National Park Directorate (DINPD) and its partner, Regional Association for Nature Conservation and Sustainable Development (BROZ) carried out the following actions: • Know-how of former projects and management activities were compiled, area managers were trained. • Species specific treatment was applied to control the most problematic species for conservation in 3 sites in Slovakia and 5 sites in Hungary, in floodplain and sand habitats. Total managed area in the project was 645 ha. • The most important farming and managing stakeholders of IAS control were involved to change attitude and behaviour as well as to exchange professional information. Five ammonite associations are studied from the Gerecse and Pilis Mountains (Bakony Unit) and one from the Mecsek Mountains, in southern Hungary. They indicate a late Middle to early Upper Oxfordian age (Bifurcatus to lower Bimammatum Zone.) The age of lower ammonite associations from the Bakony Unit ranges from late Transversarium to lower Bifurcatus Zone on the basis of Passendorferia af birmensdorfensis (Moesch) and Gregoryceras fouquei (IOlian). An upper assemblage yielding among other forms, Euaspidoceras hypselum (Oppel), Benetticeras sp. and Passendorferia rozaki Melendez, is assigned to lower Hypselum Subzone, Bimammatum Zone. The ammonite association from the Mecsek Mountains contains common Aspidoceratids, including Euaspidoceras hypselum (Oppel) and Ataxioceratids including some representatives of Orthos-phinctes (M & m) close to the 0. tiziani (Oppel) group, suggesting an upper horizon within the Hypselum Subzone. INTRODUCTION In Hungary, ammonite bearing Jurassic rocks crop out in the territory of the Transdanubian Central Range (Bakony Unit) and in south, in the Mecsek and Villhy Mountains [l]. A detailed account, with full references on the Hungarian Jurassic was given lately [Z]. Since the early times of the Hungarian geology, a special attention was dedicated to the Jurassic biostratigraphy and ammonitology.

All over the world, the naturalistic restoration of abandoned quarry areas represents a real challenge because of the very adverse initial site conditions for plant species colonization. In order to identify the best restoration practices, the present thesis considered, as a case study, the “Botticino extractive basin” (Lombardy, Italy), that is today the second greatest Italian extractive basin and it is famous worldwide for the limestone extraction. In particular, the thesis proposes a multidisciplinary approach based on the study of the local vegetation dynamics, laboratory tests, plant selection for restoration and field experiments to test different restoration techniques. Methods. Spontaneous vegetation dynamics over the whole extractive basin was studied by an ecological approach through 108 plots, that were carried out on surfaces whose “disused time” from quarry abandonment was known; data were analysed by cluster analysis and Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) and compared to the available data on grassland and woodlands related to the study area. We identified successional phases according to the trend of the most common species whose cover significantly increases or decreases with time.

Dicranum scoparium and Porella platyphylla taxa of bryophytes were used in the present study carried out to determine the free radical scavenging activities, fatty acid, and vitamin contents. In this study, it was aimed to underline the importance of bryophytes for scientific literature and to provide a basis for further studies on this subject. The data obtained in this study indicate that the DPPH radical scavenging effect of D. scoparium taxon is significantly higher than that of P. platyphylla taxon. It is known that there is a strong relationship between the phenolic compound content of methanol extracts of the plants and the DPPH radical scavenging efficiency. When the fatty acid contents were examined, it was observed that levels of all unsaturated fatty acids were higher in the P. platyphylla taxon than the D. scoparium taxon, except for α-Linolenic acid. When the vitamin contents of species were compared, it was determined that D-3, α -tocopherol, stigmasterol, betasterol amount was higher in Dicranum taxon. Species invading natural areas in Hungary have been described by a number of books published in the Practical Experiences in Invasive Alien Plant Control last few years. A great amount of experience has been gathered about the control of these species in some areas, which we can read about in an increasing number of articles; however, no book has been published with regards to the whole country. Invasions affecting larger areas require high energy and cost input, and the effectiveness and successfulness of control can be infl uenced by a number of factors. The development of effective, widely applicable control and eradication technologies is preceded by experiments and examinations which are based on a lot of practical experience and often loaded with negative experiences. National park directorates, forest and agricultural managers and NGOs in many parts of Hungary are combatting the spread of invasive species; however, the exchange of information and conclusion of experiences among the managing bodies is indispensable. The aim of the present volume is to facilitate this by summarizing experiences and the methods applied in practice; which, we hope, will enable us to successfully stop the further spread of invasive plant species and effectively protect our natural values. In the frame of the network a series of workshops have been organised from various topics of destination management till rural tourism. In the age of budget airlines and increased mobility, the importance for metropolitan areas of positioning themselves in an increasingly competitive environment where the boundaries between international tourism and local leisure are becoming blurred, has increased. Metropolitan areas are highly preferred targets for tourists owing to their diversified and concentrated attractions particularly cultural heritages and up-to-date events as well as to their business environment. They are the focal points of tourism in a lot of regions and countries.
