The roots of Germany‘s oldest holiday route go back to the year 1900. At that time, the ‘German Travel Route Number One‘ linked the River Main with the Alps. In January 1950, the Romantic Road was formally created and through the German National Tourist Board and the German airline Lufthansa became the tourist symbol for the newly established Federal Republic of Germany, especially in North America. The route, which lay in the American occu- pied zone, soon found many imitators inside and outside Germany and though this prototype for all other tourist trails has often been copied, it has never been surpassed.

First came the Japanese Romantic Road in 1982, then, in 2007, the partnership with the Rota Roman- tica in Brazil was signed and sealed and in July 2009 the Romantic Road of Korea was formerly opened. In Vietnam, too, the World Heritage Road was created, following the successful German pattern exactly.

All tourist trails take you through truly romantic regions and landscapes, full of enchanting atmos- phere where the breath of history infuses the indivi- dual towns and villages. There are regular exchanges between the ‘World‘s Romantic Roads‘ and a great deal of importance is attached to maintaining “the bonds of friendship, to the advantage and benefit of visiting guests”. One of the keys to the success of the Romantic Roads is the ubiquitous welcome and hospitality that is experienced all along the route and on the scheduled trips to the various regions, not only by visitors to Germany, but by those, too, in Japan, Brazil and South Korea. HISTORY Gothic Madonna (1420). Late Gothic Chapel of St. Ursula, which can be seen on a green hill to the south of Hohenfurch (east of the Romantic Road). Built in 1520 / 1521, the Late Gothic Chapel is dedicated to St. Ursula, the patron saint of raftsmen. Here, raftsmen from Hohenfurch and the surrounding villages gave their thanks to her for a safe return after taking logs down the Lech and Danube to the Black Sea. The focal point of the chapel is a late Gothic wing altar of extraordinary quality. Unfortunately, most of the precious figures have been stolen. Still to be seen, however, is a predella showing the martyr‘s death suffered by St. Ursula and her companions on the Rhine.
