A Time of Gifts
A Time of Gifts A Time of Gifts is the sparkling account of Patrick Leigh Fermor’s adventures as far as Hungary on his epic walk from London to Constantinople. He heads through the Lowlands to Mitteleuropa, the Teutonic and Slav heartlands, the Gothic north, the cockpit of the Roman Empire; up the Rhine, and down the Danube into the old Balkan and sub-Byzantine realms. With a ‘lifeline’ allowance of a pound a week, he planned to live ‘like a tramp, a pilgrim, or a wandering scholar’, sleeping in workhouses, monasteries and barns. But a chance introduction in Bavaria led to a counterpointing of this rough existence with leisurely sojourns in castles. In Between the Woods and the Water, the story continues as far as the Iron Gates that divide the Carpathian and Balkan moun- tains, and is concluded in The Broken Road. In December 1933, at the age of eighteen, patrick leigh fermor (1915–2011) walked across Europe, reaching Constantinople in early 1935. He travelled on into Greece, where in Athens he met Balasha Cantacuzene, with whom he lived – mostly in Rumania – until the outbreak of war. Serving in occupied Crete, he led a successful operation to kidnap a German general, for which he won the DSO. After the war he began writing, and travelled extensively round Greece with Joan Eyres Monsell whom he later married. Towards the end of his life he wrote the first two books about his early trans-European odyssey, A Time of Gifts and Between the Woods and the Water. He planned a third, unfinished at the time of his death in 2011, which has since been edited by Colin Thubron and Artemis Cooper and published as The Broken Road. -
Kriegsverbrechen Der Nazis

Bratislava As a Cultural Borderland in the Danubian Narratives of Patrick Leigh Fermor and Claudio Magris
World Literature Studies 4 . vol. 12 . 2020 (3 – 19) ŠTÚDIE / ARTIclEs Bratislava as a cultural borderland in the Danubian narratives of Patrick leigh Fermor and claudio Magris chARlEs Sabatos Although the twentieth-century history of Central Europe is one of constantly chang- ing borders, the “Iron Curtain” between the capitalist West and the communist East seemed immutably fixed by the Orwellian spring of 1984, when Milan Kundera ques- tioned the Cold War political order in his essay “A Kidnapped West” (also known as “The Tragedy of Central Europe”). Kundera’s metaphor of Central Europe as a region “kidnapped” by Soviet imperialism was influential in reasserting the West- ern cultural heritage of the region, provoking an international debate over Europe’s cultural boundaries (Sabatos 2011, 20–21). Yet in his first novel, Žert (1967; The Joke, 1969), Kundera suggests that his native Moravia is naturally linked to the East, since its rivers (unlike those of neighboring Bohemia like the Elbe, which go north into Germany) flow into the Danube. Foreshadowing his later preoccupation with the unrepeatability of history, Kundera links the passing of time to the flow of a river carrying away a garland of flowers in a Moravian folk tradition: I could just see the flowers floating and the brook passing them onto the stream, the stream to the tributary, the tributary to the Danube, and the Danube to the sea. I saw the garland go, never to return. No return. That was what brought it home to me. The basic situations in life brook no return. Any man worth his salt must come to grips with the fact of no return. -

Between 1933 and 1935 he travelled, largely on foot, from Rotterdam to Istanbul, then onwards to Mount Athos in Greece. Much later in life, he wrote two of his most celebrated books, „A Time of Gifts‟ (1977) and „Between the Woods and the Water‟ (1986), about part of this journey. A third posthumous volume, „The Broken Road‟ (2013), edited by Colin Thubron and Artemis Cooper, was based on „The Green Diary‟ (his only surviving diary from the journey) and a draft from the 1960s entitled „A Youthful Journey‟. He met the Romanian princess Balasha Cantacuzène in Athens in 1935, and the two lived together at Lemonodassos, Greece, and then at the Cantacuzène estate in Băleni, Romania, until the outbreak of war in 1939. Working as a Special Operations Executive officer behind enemy lines in Crete during World War II, he led the party that kidnapped the German General Heinrich Kreipe. The story of the abduction was later adapted into a film, „Ill Met by Moonlight‟ (1957), based on the 1950 book of the same name by Leigh Fermor‟s second in command, William Stanley Moss. -

Members of the AHI board, Ladies and Gentlemen I thank you for being here today, I thank the AHI for the invitation to be the speaker today on this topic that represents a very specific and important moment of the Hellenic History and let me also thank my friend Nick Larigakis for his kind introduction. It is an honor for me to be with you today and as I am standing at this podium, where very important people have been before me, I feel the burden on my shoulders and I will try to meet your expectations. Ladies and Gentlemen, I cannot estimate how much time someone needs in order to speak about and to cover all the aspects involved in the Battle of Crete. What I am going to do today and within the time frame we have, is to offer you selective information concerning the strategic importance of the Island, the political situation prior to the battle, a summary of the 11-day operations, the outcome of the battle and its impact on the next phase of the WW II. Matthew Staite Leigh Fermor Thesis
“A dangerous mix of recklessness and sophistication”: Themes of identity and nostalgic ideas of Europe in the travel writings of Patrick Leigh Fermor By Matthew Staite A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS In European Studies: Identity & Integration Universiteit van Amsterdam Graduate School of Humanities Supervisor: Alex Drace-Francis Secondary Reader: Joep Leerssen July 2018 1 Abstract: This thesis provides an academic study of Patrick Leigh Fermor’s travel accounts of his journey across Europe in the 1930s. Through a close analysis of these texts, it will attempt to see what these travel accounts can contribute towards ongoing debates about diversity and identity in Europe. It allows for both literary and historical approaches of study, and will refer to several travel writing theories and historiographical debates about the idea of Europe. Despite Patrick Leigh Fermor being a popular British post-war author, his works have received little scholarly attention; this thesis seeks to alert scholars to the rich potential for research that these texts provide. It will argue that both the author’s techniques of self-presentation and his conception of the history of Europe create nostalgic images of a ‘lost Europe’. While his conception of Europe doesn’t necessarily ‘Orientalise’ eastern Europe, his images of a lost Europe are heightened there. Words: 22,987 2 Preface I would like to thank my parents for supporting my decision to do this Master degree. Without their backing and support it would not have been possible. Thanks also to Alex Drace-Francis for being so helpful in supervising this thesis, and to Grzegorz Moroz for sharing his research with me. -
