i Published 2014 by ISCHE. ISSN 2313-1837 These abstracts are set in Baskerville Old Face, designed in 1757 by John Baskerville in Birmingham, UK. A writing master, businessman, printer and type designer, he conducted experiments to improve legibility which also included paper making and ink manufacturing. In 1758, he was appointed printer to Cambridge University Press, and despite his personal Atheism, printed a folio Bible in 1763. His typefaces were greatly admired for their simplicity and refinement by Pierre Simon Fournier, and Giambattista Bodoni. Benjamin Franklin, printer and fellow member of the Royal Society of Arts, took the designs to the US, where they were adopted for most federal Government publishing. The Articulation of a Pro-Rural and Anti-Urban Ideology in the Youth
“Pavements grey of the imprisoning city”: the articulation of a pro-rural and anti-urban ideology in the Youth Hostels Association (YHA) in the 1930s1 Michael Cunningham University of Wolverhampton, UK Abstract The YHA was a self-professed non-political organisation that promoted the provision of cheap accommodation for walkers and cyclists. Despite this non-political stance, the literature of the YHA in the 1930s reveals a consistent pro-rural and anti-urban ideology. This article examines the articulation of this ideology and locates it both within a longer tradition of such sentiments in England and also within the social and cultural concerns of the decade. Keywords Youth hostels, ideology, walking, rambling, ruralism, urbanism Introduction Since at least the Romantic period of the late eighteenth century, there has been a strong ideological strand in England of pro-ruralism and anti-urbanism, the cultural and literary manifestation of which has been detailed in Raymond Williams’ The Country and the City.2 This ideology involves a somewhat diffuse and amorphous set of ideas and sentiments linked by the belief that the countryside or rural life is in some way ‘better’ than the city: the former Corresponding Author: Michael Cunningham, Faculty of Social Sciences, Millennium Building, City Campus South, University of Wolverhampton, Wolverhampton, WV1 1LY Email: m.cunningham @wlv.ac.uk embodies or represents the ‘true’ or ‘real’ England while the latter is artificial; the rural embodies spiritual qualities while the city represents materialism or degeneracy; the countryside has an aesthetic superiority. Obviously, these are generalisations and the specific content of the ideology varies over time and with the groups or individuals articulating it. -
Ernest Thompson Seton 1860-1946
Ernest Thompson Seton 1860-1946 Ernest Thompson Seton was born in South Shields, Durham, England but emigrated to Toronto, Ontario with his family at the age of 6. His original name was Ernest Seton Thompson. He was the son of a ship builder who, having lost a significant amount of money left for Canada to try farming. Unsuccessful at that too, his father gained employment as an accountant. Macleod records that much of Ernest Thompson Seton 's imaginative life between the ages of ten and fifteen was centered in the wooded ravines at the edge of town, 'where he built a little cabin and spent long hours in nature study and Indian fantasy'. His father was overbearing and emotionally distant - and he tried to guide Seton away from his love of nature into more conventional career paths. He displayed a considerable talent for painting and illustration and gained a scholarship for the Royal Academy of Art in London. However, he was unable to complete the scholarship (in part through bad health). His daughter records that his first visit to the United States was in December 1883. Ernest Thompson Seton went to New York where met with many naturalists, ornithologists and writers. From then until the late 1880's he split his time between Carberry, Toronto and New York - becoming an established wildlife artist (Seton-Barber undated). In 1902 he wrote the first of a series of articles that began the Woodcraft movement (published in the Ladies Home Journal). The first article appeared in May, 1902. On the first day of July in 1902, he founded the Woodcraft Indians, when he invited a group of boys to camp at his estate in Connecticut and experimented with woodcraft and Indian-style camping. -

The Last Throes of the British Pro-Nazi Right, 1940-45 Richard Griffiths Abingdon: Routledge, 2017, £21.99, p/b David Sivier Richard Griffiths is an Emeritus Professor of King’s College, London and the author of two previous books on the British pro-Nazi Right: Fellow Travellers of the Right: British Enthusiasts for Nazi Germany 1933-39 and Patriotism Perverted: Captain Ramsay, the Right Club and British Anti-Semitism 1939-1940. This third volume is part of a series, Routledge Studies in Fascism and the Far Right.1 It’s an in-depth study of a period that is excluded from some histories of British Fascism, such as Martin Pugh’s Hurrah for the Blackshirts! British Fascism Between the Wars, 1919-1939, or else included as part of a general history of Fascism up to the present day, such as Richard Thurlow’s Fascism in Britain: A History, 1918-1985. It is meticulously footnoted and, in addition to the general bibliography at the back of the book, each chapter also has its own bibliography, including documentary sources. Many of the quotations cited in the text also come from official documents, such as MI5 reports and political correspondence between MPs. There is also a ‘rogue’s gallery’ of potted biographies of some of the Fascists and Nazis who are mentioned in the text. The book begins by attacking two myths. The first is another piece of self- serving deception by Oswald Mosley, who claimed that he had definitely not instructed his storm troopers to obstruct the British war effort. -

Organic Society: Agriculture and Radical Politics in the Career of Gerard Wallop, Ninth Earl of Portsmouth (1898–1984)*
AGHR53_1.qxd 10/03/2005 11:09 Page 78 Organic society: agriculture and radical politics in the career of Gerard Wallop, ninth Earl Of Portsmouth (1898–1984)* by Philip Conford Abstract Through examining the ideas and activities of G. V. Wallop, ninth Earl of Portsmouth, this article demonstrates a close connection between the emerging organic movement and radical right-wing poli- tics during the 1930s and 1940s. Evidence from his papers reveals that Wallop, a noted farmer and landowner, was instrumental in drawing together leading organic pioneers, and belonged to many of the groups which promoted organic husbandry during the mid-twentieth century. Other important organi- cists were to be found actively involved in his political initiatives, which were well to the Right of the spectrum. While rejecting the view that commitment to organic husbandry necessarily implies far-Right politics, the article argues that Wallop’s espousal of both causes casts serious doubt on the claim that the early organic movement was a-political. Many members of the contemporary organic movement, and of the Soil Association in partic- ular, experience a certain discomfort when the political dimension of its early history is discussed. Over the past two decades, several historians have demonstrated that during the movement’s formative years a number of its leading personalities were associated with Fascist or radical right-wing organisations and, in so doing, have handed ammunition to its enemies.1 Two main lines of response to the problem are evident. One is to try to drive a wedge between the organic movement as it has developed since the 1960s and its earlier incarnation from the 1930s to the 1950s, downplaying any continuity between the two and attributing the modern movement primarily to the impact of a broader environmentalism given impetus by Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring. -

SPRINGHALL THE BOY SCOUTS, CLASS AND MILITARISM IN RELATION TO BRITISH YOUTH MOVEMENTS 1908-1930* In the 1960's academic attention became increasingly focused, in many cases of necessity, on the forms taken by student protest and, possibly in conjunction with this, there appeared almost simultaneously a corresponding upsurge of interest in the history of organized inter- national youth movements, many of them with their origins in the late nineteenth or early twentieth centuries.1 Such a development in historiography would seem to contradict the statement once made by an English youth leader, Leslie Paul, that "because the apologetics of youth movements are callow, their arguments crude, and their prac- tices puerile, they are dismissed or ignored by scholars."2 It is certainly refreshing to see discussion of the Boy Scout movement rise above easy humour at the expense of Baden-Powell's more ec- centric views on adolescent sex education.3 Yet despite the change in historical perspective, very little has been done until comparatively recently to place Scouting, as this article cautiously attempts to do, * I would like to thank my colleagues - past and present - at the Lanchester Polytechnic, Coventry, and the New University of Ulster who commented on and made suggestions with regards to earlier drafts of this article. Introduction The Kindred of the Kibbo Kift was a British camping and campaigning organization founded in 1920. With over a thousand participating members and a raft of high-profile cultural supporters, it lasted for just over a decade. Established in the aftermath of World War I, its founding aims for cultural reconstruction were ambitious, including the complete overhaul of industry, education, and economics. Its covenant required members to commit to the delivery of a world currency, a world language, a world council of representatives, and world peace. The methods by which these grand aims would be achieved were highly idiosyncratic, incorporating hiking and handicraft alongside campfire ceremony and occult ritual. The organization’s founder-leader, John Hargrave (1894–1982), was a former Boy Scout Commissioner and a commercial artist. His organization united outdoor living and artistic practice with mystical beliefs and practices informed by Hargrave’s interests in non-Western religion and hermetic traditions. As such, Kibbo Kift’s propositions were more radical than those of other postwar social reform organizations. In its apocalyptic language, its preparations for the expected collapse of civilization, and its expected leadership of a new age, it sought to create a ‘magico-political’ fraternity of deified beings. Origins The founding of Kibbo Kift: The Woodcraft Kindred, as it was first known, took place on 18 August 1920 in London, with the first formal covenant launched by Hargrave and six other signatories. -
The Cultural Impact of Science in the Early Twentieth Century
In the early decades of the twentieth century, engagement with science was commonly used as an emblem of modernity. This phenomenon is now attracting increasing attention in different historical specialties.
