Afterwards he was in partnership with another gentleman and the firm was near where C. E. Ryan had his jewelry store in 1895. He eventually met with financial failure and lost his property. In 1857, H. A. Peck & R. A. Orvis kept a Drug Store at approximately this address, probably moving from 133 Third Avenue. In 1861 Peck increased the depth of the building to 70 feet. It is believed that Peck was still here in 1864. In May of 1864, George H. Hall & H. T. Savage opened a clothing store formerly occupied by Peck & Orvis. In September of 1864, Mrs. J. Kennedy announced to the ladies of Baraboo and the vicinity that she had opened a Ladies Furnishing Store just north of Ryan’s Jewelry Store. In May of 1866, Doane & Barstow were busy remodeling the Oak Street circa 1903 building north of Ryan’s Jewelry Store. When completed they planned on stocking the store with dry goods and groceries. -

Youth work in the UK has sometimes been recognised as having a significant contribution to make to education, whilst at other times being valued more for its supposed contribution to social order and the avoidance of riot. Most recently it was recognised as a part of education provision in the Nuffield Review (Pring,2009). This paper presents a case for youth work as a potential contributor to networks of learning which are radical democratic and prefigurative of an education practiced otherwise than primarily through individualism, credentialisation and competition (Fielding and Moss, 2011). It argues for the significance of feminist insights to radical democratic practice, in order to redress the systematic marginalisation of girls and the attribution of a social pathology to working-class boys and other entrenched divisions which occur in much social education as well as to open up the whole terrain of difference as a source of transformation. As the purpose here is to contribute to a theoretical debate, empirical examples of youth work 1 practice are briefly indicated and referenced rather than discussed in depth. However the paper begins by contextualising the theoretical debate in the history of policy as it has framed and constrained youth work. Youth work has been variously understood as a process of social and political education ( Smith,1980; Ord, 2007), community education(Coburn and Wallace, 2011) and as informal learning (Batsleer,2008). -
Praying with Young People
Praying with young people Young people can often find the act of praying a challenge. Their world can be so full and loud with the variety of activities they take on outside of their formal education. Therefore, enabling young people to find time and space to pray, and helping them to see the value of stillness and prayer is an important aspect of their formation as young Christians. As Cardinal Basil Hume says in his book, ‘To be a Pilgrim’, “One of the best definitions of prayer is the one in the catechism: “Prayer is the raising of the mind and the heart to God”. Better perhaps to say: Prayer is trying to raise our hearts and minds to God.” To be aware of themselves, of God and to connect in their own way by making the considered decision to try and pray are key to establishing a prayer life. The desire for their own sacred space: Young people can often desire their own space in which to pray. Some maybe self-conscious in large group situations where they feel forced to contribute or pray a certain way. Encouraging young people to find their own ‘sacred space’ is key to enabling them to be still, be aware and connect with God. The desire for security and regularity: Young people can often feel more secure in a regular group setting such as a parish youth group. Being with their peers with a common cause or aim can help them feel part of that community and connected to God through the cause or prayer. -

They work in ordinary places, rather than formal classrooms, and use informal methods of teaching and learning such as conversation and shared activities. Climate Action Call
Scientists say that we face a climate emergency. We need decisive action in the next 10 years to put us on a transformative pathway in line with the targets of the Paris Agreement, including efforts to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C. We must act immediately to get on track for a healthy, fair and liveable future. This will not only reduce devastating impacts of climate change but also bring major economic and social benefits, attract new investments, create new quality jobs and limit health damages. The European Parliament elections and subsequent changes in the leadership of the European Commission will shape the politics of the European Union for the next five years, a crucial period for climate action where emissions need to decline fast, targets need to be strengthened and ambitious action needs to be implemented. The new Parliament and the new Commission must address growing concerns about climate change and make climate action a top priority for Europe. Therefore, we call upon the new European Parliament, the new European Commission and all EU Member State governments to: 1. Commit to accelerate actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and reach net zero emissions as soon as possible. The world is not on track to keep temperature rise to 1.5°C. We support the call from United Nations Secretary General António Guterres, upon all leaders to come to his special UN Climate Summit in September with additional commitments that will lead to halving global emissions by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050. By the Summit, EU leaders should agree to reach climate neutrality in line with the EU’s fair share of the effort to achieve net zero global emissions by 2050. -

Ernest Thompson Seton 1860-1946
Ernest Thompson Seton 1860-1946 Ernest Thompson Seton was born in South Shields, Durham, England but emigrated to Toronto, Ontario with his family at the age of 6. His original name was Ernest Seton Thompson. He was the son of a ship builder who, having lost a significant amount of money left for Canada to try farming. Unsuccessful at that too, his father gained employment as an accountant. Macleod records that much of Ernest Thompson Seton 's imaginative life between the ages of ten and fifteen was centered in the wooded ravines at the edge of town, 'where he built a little cabin and spent long hours in nature study and Indian fantasy'. His father was overbearing and emotionally distant - and he tried to guide Seton away from his love of nature into more conventional career paths. He displayed a considerable talent for painting and illustration and gained a scholarship for the Royal Academy of Art in London. However, he was unable to complete the scholarship (in part through bad health). His daughter records that his first visit to the United States was in December 1883. Ernest Thompson Seton went to New York where met with many naturalists, ornithologists and writers. From then until the late 1880's he split his time between Carberry, Toronto and New York - becoming an established wildlife artist (Seton-Barber undated). In 1902 he wrote the first of a series of articles that began the Woodcraft movement (published in the Ladies Home Journal). The first article appeared in May, 1902. On the first day of July in 1902, he founded the Woodcraft Indians, when he invited a group of boys to camp at his estate in Connecticut and experimented with woodcraft and Indian-style camping.
