ALL MY SONS a play in three acts by Arthur Miller Characters: Joe Keller (Keller) Kate Keller (Mother) Chris Keller Ann Deever George Deever Dr. Jim Bayliss (Jim) Sue Bayliss Frank Lubey Lydia Lubey Bert Act One The back yard of the Keller home in the outskirts of an American town. August of our era. The stage is hedged on right and left by tall, closely planted poplars which lend the yard a secluded atmosphere. Upstage is filled with the back of the house and its open, unroofed porch which extends into the yard some six feet. The house is two stories high and has seven rooms. It would have cost perhaps fifteen thousand in the early twenties when it was built. Now it is nicely painted, looks tight and comfortable, and the yard is green with sod, here and there plants whose season is gone. At the right, beside the house, the entrance of the driveway can be seen, but the poplars cut off view of its continuation downstage. In the left corner, downstage, stands the four‐foot‐high stump of a slender apple tree whose upper trunk and branches lie toppled beside it, fruit still clinging to its branches. Downstage right is a small, trellised arbor, shaped like a sea shell, with a decorative bulb hanging from its forward‐curving roof. Carden chairs and a table are scattered about. A garbage pail on the ground next to the porch steps, a wire leaf‐burner near it. On the rise: It is early Sunday morning. Joe Keller is sitting in the sun reading the want ads of the Sunday paper, the other sections of which lie neatly on the ground beside him. -

So, I’ll be candid in saying that this is my eighth attempt at writing it. I’ve started and stopped, deleted and retyped, closed my laptop and reopened it. Never in my life have I found it this difficult to write, never in my life has my body physically ached at the thought of sitting down and spending time in my own headspace. Right now, my headspace is the last place on earth I want to be. I’ve decided that this will be my last attempt at writing, and whatever comes out now will remain on the page. I am currently sitting on my couch under a pile of blankets, reclined back as far as my seat will allow me to go. My Amazon Alexa is belting music from an oldies playlist, and my dad is sitting at the kitchen table singing along to “December, 1963” by The Four Seasons as he works. -

My historical charting of queering femininities begins with different key historical and discursive moments in twentieth- century British Culture that shape how we now think about femininity. Femininity becomes a key area of contestation in early twentieth-century Britain, as Britain attempts to redefine femininity with the emergence of categories of lesbian sexuality. Because of this cultural shift in how femininity and sexuality are conceptualized, I analyze how different modernists and contemporary British literatures represent a historical trajectory of femme femininities and how this literature offers us a space to queer femininity. My dissertation project theorizes the resistant and transformative possibilities of the pleasures of femme femininities. My goals for this project are to question damaging and destructive assumptions about femininity, -

FICTION And N. E. Houston The association of man and woman In daunsinge, signifying matrimonie— A dignified and commodious sacrament. Two by two, necessarye coniunction, —T. S. Eliot Amos enjoyed her company, but he felt lost. Despite the many times they had walked across campus together, he still felt lost. The fog had set in heavy over by the Carillon Tower, screaming like someone falling off the overpass into the canal and drowning, someone who'd been walking atop the overpass wall and had slipped in the fog. He wanted to go down into the water and grab the man out, but what if he couldn't get back up the bank and perished too? The first thing was to get across the parking lot, and to do that he had to cross the road. No cars hit him, but he almost collapsed in the parking lot, the fog pressed so heavily on him. It lay darkly on his eyes, willing him to sleep—but he kept moving forward till he came to the stairs by the fountain in front of the administration building and grasped firmly the handrailing. Greenish white light flashed in the distance, probably copy machines in the library, great and spacious—the fog was lifting. He saw people N.E. HOUSTON is a freelance writer.
