He works at Lenscrafters, making glasses, making decent money and he is comfortable. The novel opens when Jesse‟s high school friend, Ben, is visiting from Los Angeles, where he is a screenwriter. The two go to a party for another old acquaintance, Ian, who has just returned from a tour in Iraq. Their encounter with Ian sets the rest of the novel in motion. They are exposed to something big in the world (the machinery of a war that up to that point had been nothing more than words in magazines and pictures in newspapers). The two, who feel unaccomplished, decide that they want to do big things—important things. They decide to combat crime in Salinas, to become vigilantes, like Marvel Comics‟ The Punisher. They decide to do this despite the fact that neither of them can think of a time that he has seen or met a real criminal. Jesse‟s paternal grandparents are from Spain, and their story is told from a limited third-person perspective. This part of the novel is about the experiences of Jesse‟s grandparents during the Spanish Civil War, about being Nationalists behind Republican lines, and about being on the wrong side of a war. Parallels are drawn between Franco‟s war in Spain and the American war in Iraq. Ultimately, this novel is a coming-of-age story that explores themes of alienation, disenfranchisement, helplessness, and perspective. ALL MY SONS a play in three acts by Arthur Miller Characters: Joe Keller (Keller) Kate Keller (Mother) Chris Keller Ann Deever George Deever Dr. Jim Bayliss (Jim) Sue Bayliss Frank Lubey Lydia Lubey Bert Act One The back yard of the Keller home in the outskirts of an American town. August of our era. The stage is hedged on right and left by tall, closely planted poplars which lend the yard a secluded atmosphere. Upstage is filled with the back of the house and its open, unroofed porch which extends into the yard some six feet. The house is two stories high and has seven rooms. It would have cost perhaps fifteen thousand in the early twenties when it was built. Now it is nicely painted, looks tight and comfortable, and the yard is green with sod, here and there plants whose season is gone. At the right, beside the house, the entrance of the driveway can be seen, but the poplars cut off view of its continuation downstage. In the left corner, downstage, stands the four‐foot‐high stump of a slender apple tree whose upper trunk and branches lie toppled beside it, fruit still clinging to its branches. Downstage right is a small, trellised arbor, shaped like a sea shell, with a decorative bulb hanging from its forward‐curving roof. Carden chairs and a table are scattered about. A garbage pail on the ground next to the porch steps, a wire leaf‐burner near it. On the rise: It is early Sunday morning. Joe Keller is sitting in the sun reading the want ads of the Sunday paper, the other sections of which lie neatly on the ground beside him.

The Career of John Jacob Niles: a Study in the Intersection of Elite, Traditional, and Popular Musical Performance Ron Pen As a young and naive doctoral student, I approached my folklore professor with a dissertation proposal. Quivering with trepidation, I informed him that I intended to provide an initial biography and works of the composer and balladeer John Jacob Niles. The folklorist cast a bemused glance over his tortoise shell glasses and said: "He was a fraud. You realize, of course, that no folklorist would write his obituary." Years later, with the dissertation nestled securely on the library shelves, I recalled this conversation and attempted to reconcile my understanding of John Jacob Niles's career with the folklorist's accusation.

So, I’ll be candid in saying that this is my eighth attempt at writing it. I’ve started and stopped, deleted and retyped, closed my laptop and reopened it. Never in my life have I found it this difficult to write, never in my life has my body physically ached at the thought of sitting down and spending time in my own headspace. Right now, my headspace is the last place on earth I want to be. I’ve decided that this will be my last attempt at writing, and whatever comes out now will remain on the page. I am currently sitting on my couch under a pile of blankets, reclined back as far as my seat will allow me to go. My Amazon Alexa is belting music from an oldies playlist, and my dad is sitting at the kitchen table singing along to “December, 1963” by The Four Seasons as he works.

Sucker slept in my bed with me but that didn’t interfere with anything. The room was mine and I used it as I wanted to. Once I remember sawing a trap door in the floor. Last year when I was a sophomore in high school I tacked on my wall some pictures of girls from magazines and one of them was just in her underwear. My mother never bothered me because she had the younger kids to look after. And Sucker thought anything I did was always swell. Whenever I would bring any of my friends back to my room all I had to do was just glance once at Sucker and he would get up from whatever he was busy with and maybe half smile at me, and leave without saying a word.
