Tuesday, September 15th – Rioja Wine Touring Your guide will meet you at your accommodations this morning as we set out for a charming day discovering the Rioja Wine Region.

We begin the day with a visit to a boutique family- owned winery called Amaren. Amaren, "the wine of the mother", was born with the of 1995 as a tribute to Ángeles, mother of winemaker Juan Luis Cañas, who currently directs the winery. AMAREN, which in Basque means "of the mother", was the first wine thought, made and marketed by Bodegas Luis Cañas to place it among the most outstanding wines of the country. In 2009, Juan Luis Cañas sees his dream come true, dedicating not only a wine but an entire to his mother. Bodegas Amaren was born.

Afterwards, by contrast, we visit strikingly modern and high-tech, Baigorri winery. Built on 7 levels into a terraced hillside to take advantage of gravity flow to move their wines. This project is the work of Iñaki Aspizu, an architect whose work is an architectonic reference. In their restaurant, we will have lunch in front of the vineyards with creative food that also represents .

Today, we will visit one of the most traditional Riojan places, where it is very well represented by some centenary wineries, who keep bottles from the time of their founders in their libraries, at the historical barrio de las Bodegas in Haro. This is also called the Barrio de la Estación, or train station quarter, and the wineries were established here at the end of the XIX century to be close to the train station to ship the wine.

Next, we will arrange a visit to Muga Winery, which is one of the most classical wineries of Rioja. The Muga family has been making their wines since 1932. They are located in the old station district on the outskirts of Haro, the historical site of the most prestigious bodegas in La Rioja. They follow the most traditional methods in the wine-making process, using through and through. They carry out all the process including the aging and fermentation in oak. Their barrels of French and American oak are renewed every ten years maximum. The excellence and high quality of their wines are rewarded by high recognition and prestige in the most demanding markets both nationally and internationally.

Afterwards, we will be welcomed through the doors of another producer, such as Roda Winery, a very modern winery in the middle of the traditional Barrio de la Estación de Haro. The contrast with their neighbors is amazing. They produce only reserves, very good, high-quality wines as well as olive oil. Here we will have an opportunity to taste both.

This afternoon, enjoy lunch in a winery or local restaurant. Typical Riojan dishes are potatoes or bean soup with chorizo (paprika sausage), roasted lamb chops where sarmientos (dry vine branches)

Friday, September 18th – Priorat Wine or Barcelona City Discovery Today, you have two options for exploring, either a day in the Priorat wine region, or a discovery tour of Barcelona.

Option A - Priorat Wine Day We will start the drive to Priorat from Barcelona (~2-hour drive) and we will visit two of the most representative wineries with . Spend the day getting to know the incredibly beautiful and rugged Priorat wine region, with it's steep hills covered from top to bottom in craggy vines. Ideally, we begin the morning with a visit at one of the first and most influential wineries of the modern Priorat renaissance in wine making, Mas Martinet. This also happens to be one for the prettiest vineyards and a fabulous visit.

Afterwards, we will head to another producer in one of the main villages of Priorat such as Celler Mas Doix. Created by the Doix & Llagostera family in 1998, it is the reinitiation of a tradition that began in 1850. The gold medal obtained in the Universal Exhibition of Barcelona in 1888 and the silver medal won in the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1878, remind us of the passion with which Juan Extrems Doix, Juan Doix's grandfather, used long ago to look after the vineyards and produce his wines. The outbreak did not mean the end of the family's vineyards. They were replanted with Garnacha and Cariñena varieties, native to the Priorat region, thereby maintaining the growth of the vineyards while the production was sent to the co-operative in Poboleda until it was produced in the winery. Nowadays, they are laboring with love and passion for the fruit grown in our hundred-year- old vineyards so they can produce great wines.

Following a break for lunch at a local restaurant or winery to enjoy traditional seasonal dishes paired with Priorat and Montsant wines, we will head to the ruins of Scala Dei, a medieval monastery. The prior of Scala Dei ruled as a feudal lord over seven villages in the area, which gave rise to the Priorat wine region and is considered to be the first Carthusian monastery on the . Here, we will visit a nearby producer for an olive oil tasting.

Option B - Barcelona City Discovery Spain is blessed with many natural wonders, but our crowning jewel must be the splendid Mediterranean coast. Starting just north of Barcelona and stretching all the way down through , the Mediterranean region has a different air than the rest of Spain. Cosmopolitan cities shine with colorful mosaic-embellished buildings and ancient cathedrals, and sleepy beach towns look like they’ve been pulled from a painting. Whether you’re a sun-worshiper looking to spend your days on the sand, or a foodie on a mission to sample every version of has to offer, in Barcelona, it’s all at your doorstep.

This morning, join your guide at your hotel and set off for a discovery walking tour of Barcelona. The enchanting capital of Spain’s region, is known for its art and architecture. Today, with your guide, you will visit the infamous Sagrada Familia, with its fantastical architecture as designed by the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. Throughout the morning, focusing on Gaudi’s influence on the city, perhaps your guide will bring you to the stunning Laribal Gardens and Antoni Gaudí’s Park Güell. We will also visit the large Boquería Market off of Las Ramblas.

After our visit of the sites, your guide will bring you to a local restaurant this afternoon to enjoy a traditional paella lunch with views over the sea. Paella is one of the best-known dishes of Spanish cuisine and takes its name from the wide, shallow traditional pan used to cook the dish on an open fire.

Farewell Dinner in Barcelona This evening, we will arrange a beautiful farewell dinner at Fonda España in the center of Barcelona. Gastronomy is one of Hotel España's major commitments, with Martín Berasategui as gastronomic manager. At Restaurante Fonda España, Martín Berasategui gets back to the old concept of the fonda (inn) by making a commitment to the most traditional style of cooking, while embracing modernity. In charge of the ovens of Fonda España is the chef, German Espinosa, with years of experience under the guidance of Martín Berasategui. The restaurant is located in the Modernist dining room originally designed and decorated by Domènech i Montaner, a rich environment of historical value in which the older features enhance and inspire the new.
