Spirited, with a slight curl to her short brown and sil­ ver hair, she is quick-witted and full of stories. The new generation's ethos involves a constant search for breakout wines. "Every generation has to show the thinking of that generation in their work," he says. "Everything the family has created has come from work in the vineyards and the winery. In my family, this is all we know how to do." iguel Torres Maczassek is a globetrotting CEO who travels the world three months each year. As a young man, Torres Maczassek earned a master's degree in business in Barcelona, then finished with a semester at the Univer­ sity ofNorth Carolina. By the time he graduated, he says, "Wine was calling me." He sought jobs at other Spanish wineries but says no one would hire a Torres heir "because nobody thought I would stay." So instead, he went to work for the perfume division of Carolina Herrera, owned by Barcelona fashion giant Puig. Over four years working as a product and brand manager, he learned valuable mar­ keting lessons applicable to wine, including "starting with an idea and creating something based on senses and emotion." In 2001, his father offered him the job of general manager at their Penedes' winery Jean Leon, a largely independent estate the family purchased in 1994 from its ailing namesake founder. Leon (born Ceferino Carrion) was a Spanish legend who'd left his home at 19 to seek his fortune,sailing as a stowaway from France to New York and eventually making his way to Hollywood.     Conversations with Winemakers in Spain’s Penedès Region1 Prepared by Lucia and John Gilbert, June 2015 We have been studying the career paths of U.S. winemakers who are women, mostly in California, for the past three years (www.womenwinemakers.com), and are extending this research to winemakers in Spain. Our first trip, in July 2014, was to the Rioja wine region where we had conversations with several of its women winemakers.2 Our more recent trip, in April 2015, was to the Penedès, a wine region located in the autonomous community of Catalonia and a short drive west of Barcelona. A Parés Baltà Vineyard high above Sant Marti Sarroca We stayed at a small hotel in the town of Vilafranca del Penedès. This location was selected because it was an easy drive from the hotel to the wineries that we had arranged to visit well in advance. Appointments are required. Arranging the Visits and Conversations We were fortunate to be able to schedule winery visits and conversations with five highly impressive women we identified through our research. These five women craft their wines at bodegas having varying levels of production and are involved in producing Cava, still wines, or both. Laura Tragant at Codorníu, Eva Plazas Torné at Vilarnau, Maria Elena Jiménez and Marta Casas at Parés Baltà, and Mireia Torres Maczassek at Jean Leon Winery (and Torres Priorat) are the winemakers with whom we arranged visits and had our conversations. In recent years Spanish regions have been foremost in Europe in terms of change in areas turned over to wine production and distribution (Anderson, Norman and Wittwer, 2004). Some writers have gone so far as to talk about a “revolution in the vineyards and wines of Spain” in response to increasing international competition. The changes have been prolific since Spain’s entry into the European Economic Community in 1986. European agricultural policies supposed a huge readjustment in the geographical distribution of Spain’s vineyards and it had a significant effect on the regions in the country which were involved in the regulation of the wine market. This study analyses the main sequences of changes the Spanish wine industry has undergone: the evolution of consumption through the changes in consumer drinking habits; the leading role of exports in international markets; the spread of different types of marketing and business organization; the distribution in large and small sellers, and the main factors that have been involved in the chain of production and in the modernization of the wineries. 1.
