Commodore’s Comment By Bruce Wieland The close of the 2016 year was celebrated in spectacular fashion with the Christmas Party and Trophy Presentation. Social Secretary Lyn again produced a very special themed party night. Attendance at this function is growing year by year, and the imaginative costumes reflect the friendly spirit within the club. Congratulations to the trophy winners, particularly to Club Champion Chris Wren and the crew of frequentflyer. The competition was very close with runner up Hasta La Vista only 8 points adrift. The experiment of breaking the year into four series of races has received positive feedback and will continue, with some fine tuning, in 2017. Planning is underway for the B2G Race, and some exciting new features are to be announced soon. Stay tuned!! Cruising events on Moreton Bay this year seemed to be affected by weather, with several cancelled, but with the exception of the November cruise to beautiful Lucinda Bay. Those big multis which sailed north for the regattas enjoyed great sailing conditions in the north, but experienced a mixed bag of conditions for the passages. Renaissance and PurrFik did manage leisurely cruises north. There will be no organized Christmas Cruise this year as all effort is going towards a Gladstone Cruise, similar to the 50th Anniversary Cruise, built around during Easter 2017. Details will be published soon! The Management Committee is substantially unchanged following the AGM in November. We do welcome back the very timid Peter Hackett to the team. Peter has taken over the role as OMR Data Officer. Zebb Peters has stood down from that role having served for several years. I pay tribute to Zebb and on behalf of members, thank him for serving MYCQ in multiple roles. Also standing down from Management Committee is Life Member Jim Stubbings. Jim has an extraordinary passion for MYCQ, always displaying infectious enthusiasm. Thank you Jim and well done! Lyn and I are humbled to be jointly awarded the Gold Rush Trophy for outstanding service to the club. This award is voted by the Life Members of the club for recognition of service. MYCQ has no paid staff, it is a club of volunteers. As always there are many people who contribute to our success. I do wish to make special mention of Lyn. Lyn does not have a history of sailing, and in fact can’t swim, but she does have a long history of support for causes. (me included) Her organizational ability is superb, as shown by the success of events like the “Old Salts Luncheon”, the “Casino Night”, three Christmas Parties and B2G Presentations, and the B2G start 2016 in conjunction with the Bluewater Festival. Thank you to the members for the recognition awarded to Lyn Wieland.

From the Editor Welcome to the final edition of the Multinews for 2016. It has been a difficult year for me working in Sydney and not able to attend any meetings nor attend many of the club events. Even though I will still be in Sydney during most of 2017 I will be hoping that I can attend a few more events and get out on the boat a bit more. This Edition is full of Events that will be of interest to members including the Nationals, the Kings Cup, Extreme Sailing in Sydney and some international News. Also included are the AGM minutes and a slightly revised list of Office Holders. Unfortunately I don’t have a Calendar for 2017 yet but hopefully this will be included in the next edition. The next edition will be sent out just before the February Meeting so until then have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Social Report by Lyn Wieland—Social Secretary

Ho Ho Ho! and a very Merry Christmas to all, Let me tell you about the good times shared in the past month. Firstly the AGM meeting was successful and a new committee was formed. I was nominated and accepted Social Secretary for one more year, but believe change is positive and it is time for a new person in the role at the next AGM. So notice is given to the next contender to step forward in 2017.

The weather in November has been rough, windy or at the extreme, just picture perfect. It so happened the cruise for Col Graham ( Colandi) and Alan November picked the latter and Lucinda Bay Hunter (Talisker) at MYCQ Cruise to on Moreton Island was just that. Talisker, Lucinda Bay Nov 2016 Colandi and Hasta la vista for a perfect overnight in this part of the bay joined Bruce Thankyou Col and Di Graham on Colandi for and me on Shanda. Crystal clear water, hosting the troops for sundowners and lots of perfect sunset, warm water all in harmony laughs. The easterly breeze between 10 – 15 with the “hoot” of the P&O Cruiser anchored knots set our sails for a lovely trip back to overnight at Tangalooma. Manly on Sunday. Smiles all around.

2016 Nationals—Wangi By Peter Hackett

The boats are home, the crews are tending the bruises, and the organisers are hopefully still sleeping after the running of another awesome APC Logistics Australian Multihull Championship at Wangi ASC. This event has been running every 2 years for as long as I can remember, and it is not hard to see why we all keep coming back. Flat water, fresh to strong breezes, grassy beaches to drag the boats up on, and a truly eclectic village atmosphere for crews and spectators to enjoy a beer on the grass or a seafood bouillabaisse in a local eatery make for a perfect formula. Shane Russell and his wife Michelle and daughter Kimberley did the hard yards again this year, and like all great organisers they say this is their last. As long as the merry band of smiling locals keeps doing the job, the tradition should continue nicely. An invitation race and six heats were run, mainly intending to feature tactical multiple windward leeward legs, but nature shifted these a little to quite a few reaching legs in the fresh winds. Multihullers hate reaching at speeds in excess of 20 knots (in most races!!) , and the photos show that we hated Diam 24 Wilparina III (un petit that a lot. The 36 mile passage race that bateaux une douleur dans le cul)

Division 2 was a clear win for the little green F22R Sknot, Chris Culph and Craig Unthank’s latest love affair. John Dowling put together a hot crew of A class mates to get the Mark 1 Sprint Triple A Racing into second place, just ahead of my 20 year old F28R Trinity. We managed a navigational faux pas in one race to help the other guys. In Division 3 local legend John Longworth ran his masthead kite on most legs to win the gold, but on the last heat his newly blown 2 piece mast shortened that day for him. Grahame Rivett won cruising division on his F24 with a furled or unfurled screacher up all day, what a way to enjoy the view. MYCQ will be running the 2017 national series at RQYS on the more open waters of Moreton Bay, and that should encourage the big bridgedeck racers to join the fray. Rumour has it that a few boats will be flying above the water by then….. Maybe elsewhere in this newsletter???

Who’s the Boss!

By Peter Hackett

In a far-flung end of the Brisbane northern galaxy, there is a big house, some big sheds, and some very cool looking boat bits. Those of us who have been to Gary Saxby’s UK Halsey loft at Cashmere will have seen the interesting sail and foil-cutting gizmos there for years, but now he is building another Super-Boss, and I thought a few pics might get our members excited. Gary and his wunderkind son Jamie have designed and are quietly CNC cutting, laminating, infusing, and putting together a foiling catamaran that might make things a little more exciting around the bay in the next year. The new black carbon cat is taking shape where the little and big Boss were grown, in the garden out the back of the home that houses the design “smartstuff”. The hulls, hiking racks, beams, and now carbon mast moulds are out the back under a tarp curing nicely in this warm weather we are all enjoying (not). Inside an adjoining shed is the stuff that got me excited. The carbon moulds are already being filled with the skins for the mid-hull vertical centreboards that will join to wand- controlled altitude T-foils at the bottom of the boards. At the back of each hull is a balancing, tall T-rudder which has the main purpose of keeping the whole craft level during all levels of flight. The boys have The lower T-foil coming out of the thought long and hard about the mould developments around the world of J,Z,C, UpTiP, and in fact the whole alphabet of foils, and have settled on controlled T to get them around the racecourse upright and elevated. It all sounds a bit mad scientist, and I think you all will agree that any of the successful inventions in our sport have looked and sounded a little mad at first, but I am sure this one will give us something to watch for quite a while. You would be surprised to know how many conventional boats out there have appendages designed and milled in these sheds, from the big monohull Wild Thing’s bulb keel, to rudders and centreboards for other multihulls. Carbon T-porn. The aft edge will be And then I need to find a way to give this detached and joined with a flexible boat an OMR rating? Mmmmm…. hinge 29
