Newsletter 1/2020 Looking back on an eventful year… Awards, boat optimisations, coastal and offshore races,ur fo transats, new partnerships and a continuous focus on sustainability: 2019 was a very exciting and successful year for Team Malizia. Time to recap what has happened and what we have achieved over the past 12 months. January The Malizia Ocean Challenge wins the Ocean Tribute Award, category ‘society’ during the blue motion night at the international boat show Boot Düsseldorf 2019. Our campaign was honoured for the dedication and action to protect the oceans and to foster innovative as well as sustainable marine conservation ideas. ©Messectillmann / Düsseldorf February Boris wins the German Offshore Award 2019 in Hamburg, following his excellent 5th place in the solo transatlantic race Route du Rhum 2018. In this context, the Imoca 60 Malizia is named “Best German Offshore Yacht 2018”. Malizia is equipped with brand-new solar panels ©Hinrich Franck and hydro generators in Lorient. ©Team Malizia March Team Malizia takes part in the annual Monaco Ocean Week. Pierre Casiraghi, Boris Herrmann and Dr. Stefan Raimund from SubCtech ocean data collection systems, speak at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco to spread the team’s message of sustainability and to raise awareness for ocean protection. It was once more such a pleasure to interact with all the kids and see them getting really involved in these topics concerning the maritime environment and its preservation on the occasion of this fantastic event. ©Cedou April Launching of Malizia in Lorient after five months of extensive refit and thousands of working hours in the boatyard. Malizia had been completely taken apart, all systems and components on board had been thoroughly checked and overhauled. During this major maintenance and refit operation, the boat was fully optimised for the IMOCA 60 racing season, for instance by modifying the layout of the ballast tanks, adjusting the keel ram and optimising the bow sprit. The generator system had been fully redesigned and Malizia had been equipped with a state-of-the-art solar installation by SOLBIAN Solar. So, Sea2see follows a philosophy of maritime environmental protection and sustainability, which fits Team Malizia’s mission perfectly. Monaco de ©Mesi/Yacht Club Malizia competes in the Grand Prix Guyader 2019. Three days of fantastic inshore coastal racing off Douarnenez/Brittany. First offshore race of the season: Malizia participates in the Bermudes 1000 Race, a solo 2000nm race from Douarnenez, to the Fastnet Rock, the Azores islands and back to Brest. Boris finishes the race in 6th position. ©Eliza Chohadzhieva June Pierre and Boris participate in the Rolex Giraglia 2019 on board Malizia in class IRC 0. The duo completed the 240nm offshore classic in the Mediterranean in just 20 hours and 40 minutes. Malizia is officially registered for The Ocean Race 2021-2022. ©Martin Messmer July Team Malizia becomes the first sailing team to join the Sports for Climate Action initiative by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) by following its five fundamental principles: Promoting greater environmental responsibility, reducing overall climate impact, educating for climate action by using eth own platform to show possible ways of climate protection, promoting sustainable and responsible consumption, ©YannickKethers and advocating for climate action through own communication channels. Malizia is equipped with a set of brand-new custom-made Quantum Fusion M VX Racing Sails including a J2, J3 and mainsail. Later in the season a Masthead Code 0 XC and Fractional Code XC Six featuring each Quantum’s innovative cableless design were added to Malizia’s new sail inventory. August / Carlin The©Brian Ocean Race Boris Herrmann and Will Harris finish the Rolex Fastnet Race 2019 on board Malizia in 8th position in the twenty-strong IMOCA 60 fleet. The 48th edition of the legendary race was very exciting and tactically highly ©YannickKethers Team Malizia sails Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg fully emission free across the Atlantic Ocean, from Plymouth to New York. The transatlantic trip takes 13 days and 18 hours and reaches millions of people. In fact, it was the biggest activation for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with 800 million people following the arrival. We strongly support Greta’s message and were honoured to take her to the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York. We are very proud and happy to have contributed to such an important cause. 2 ©Jen Edney ©Jen Edney ©Jen Edney ©Jen Edney September Stuart Mclachlan, Shane Diviney, Sharron Ferris-Choat, Arno Böhnert and The Ocean Race onboard reporter Brian Carlin sail Malizia from New York back to Europe. The team stops at Saint-Pierre island located south of Newfoundland to check Malizia’s hull and appendices for damage following a collision with an unidentified object on the high seas and to wait for hurricane Dorian to pass, and eventually arrives in Lorient on the 23rd of September. ©Brian Carlin / Carlin The©Brian Ocean Race ©Brian Carlin / Carlin The©Brian Ocean Race ©Brian Carlin / Carlin The©Brian Ocean Race Team Malizia joins the Sports4Future initiative aimed at using the unifying power of sport to tackle the challenges of the climate crisis together. Boris Herrmann and Team Malizia are ambassadors of the Hamburg Climate Week 2019. Throughout the event, the team speaks about the ocean and climate change. Highlight of the week is the children’s conference, where we welcomed more than 250 children from Hamburg schools. ©SvenJürgensen October Skippers Boris and Will set off from Le Havre to cross the Atlantic to Salvador, Brazil, along with other 28 IMOCA 60s in the 4350nm long Transat Jacques Vabre race. During the 10 days prior to the start, the team welcomes over 1500 children at the race village and educates them on the marine environment and climate change. Team Malizia officially announces the new partnership with theglobal logistics company Kuehne + Nagel. November 8 days into the Transat Jacques Vabre race, Boris and Will release mid-Atlantic a state-of-the -art scientific surface drifter buoy at position 13°07’N 27° 52’W that will collect ocean data for the EU Copernicus TRUSTED project as well as the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO. Malizia ©Team After 14 days and 22 hours at sea and more than 5000nm sailed in mixed wind and weather conditions, the duo crosses the finish line off Salvador in 12th position. Team Malizia’s education kit and teaching materials are now also available in Portuguese. ©Team Malizia Simultaneously, skipper Boris Herrmann gives a speech about ocean health in Paris on the occasion of a high-level side event to the 40th General Conference of UNESCO about sustainability and the impact climate change has on the world’s ©Team Malizia oceans. Stuart, Mike and Ludo sail Malizia back to the base in Lorient with Brazilian coffee on board taken emission free to Europe. 3 ©Team Malizia December Malizia is taken out of the water and into the shed in Lorient for another extensive winter refit and optimisation programme. ©Team Malizia Team Malizia wins the In Memory of Guo Chuan category of the Peace and Sports Awards 2019 in Monaco. As a team, we strongly believe in using the sailing sport to promote peace and address the most important topics challenging our world and the people these days. ©Team Malizia Over the past 18 months, more than 10.000 children have been engaged in the Malizia Ocean Challenge project and have been working with our own Education Kit. ©YannickKethers ©Team Malizia Lindlahr©Andreas Boris Herrmann completes the IMOCA 60 racing season 2019 on the podium! He occupies the 3rd position in the IMOCA Globe Series World Championship Ranking. 4 Coming up in 2020… The Transat CIC: 3.400 nautical miles long single-handed race across the Atlantic from Brest/France to Charlestown/USA. Start on the 10th of May 2020 at 15:00. Transat New York – Vendée-Les Sables d’Olonne : Second solo transat in the IMOCA Globe Series race calendar 2018. A 3.100 nautical miles long ‘sprint’ back to Europe against some 30 IMOCA skippers as a final offshore racing preparation inew vi of the Vendée Globe. Start on the 16th of June 2020 at 13:00. Défi Azimut: 5 days of IMOCA 60 racing action off the coast of Lorient and around the island Île de Groix, including a number of “speed runs”, a 48h double-handed offshore challenge as well as the “Tour de l’Île de Groix” with crew on board. 9th to 13th of September 2020. Vendée Globe: The ‘Everest of the Seas’, the absolute highlight of the year and the entire campaign: The solo, nonstop race around the world, without outside assistance. Start on Sunday, 8th of November 2020 at 13:02 from Les Sables d’Olonne. The Race Village opens on the 27th of October! Throughout the year and in preparation of the Vendée Globe, we will also participate in all IMOCA 60 practical training sessions organised by the worldwide renowned Pôle Finstère Course au Large in Port-la-Forêt/France. Come and meet Team Malizia at the Race Villages of the various races we will be taking part in during the year - Brest, Charlestown, New York, Lorient, Les Sables d’Olonne.
