WW II GROUPS D058 Four: Dr, Author, Major, Professor Alan LENNOX-SHORT SA Intelligence VF+ 600 Corps Italy Star; Defence Medal; British War Medal 1939-45; Africa Service Medal – all officially impressed 323081 A. Lennox-Short We quote the article written about Professor Short on his retirement, from UCT Staff News, No 40 Dec 1978. He was seconded to the British Government 31/12/1942 to 31/7/1944 and 31/1/1945 to 31/5/1945. Group comes with S.A.D.F. Documentation Service full record of service in World War II including his attachment to the SA Permanent Force. Copies of his service record show that this is his full medal entitlement. “ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR A. LENNOX-SHORT English When,in 1962, Professor Alan Lennox-Short was appointed a lecturer in English at the University of Cape Town, he was, in a sense, returning home. It was here that, before going to Christ Church, Oxford, he took his M.A. in English language, helped to found the Literary Society, represented UCT in inter-university debates, became president of the Dramatic Society, and as Hippolytus in the Little Theatre’s second production, Hippolytus, began a long association with the Little Theatre as an actor and a producer. (While at Oxford he took part in the first BBC presentation of an OUDS production … Richard II, in chish Sir John Gielgud was the producer. It was Gielgud who taught Professor Lennox-Short to bow without sticking out his behind.) The main interruption in Professor Lennox-Short’s academic career was the Second Word War, during which he became Chief Information Officer at Waterkoof, then an RAF/SAAF base. Subsequently, as a captain, he

6

was appointed South African representative with the British Ministry of Information, his work taking him to both North Africa and Italy. In the United Kingdom he spoke to audiences raging from the Royal Institute of International Affairs to mass munitions-worker meetings numbering several thousands. He likes to remember a contact at Coventry who, after that city had been blitzed, asked him solicitously whether he had been able to get his “smalls” washed. Academically, his most interesting diversion was an appointment at what was then the University College of the West Indies. At that time the territory of the University College stretched from British Honduras to what was then British Guiana. Professor Lennox-Short was sent to British Guiana to represent the University and one of his projects was a ‘University of the Air’ intended to overcome the geographical obstacles of the colony. Asked by the British Council to go on a lecture tour, he, green innocent that he was, decided that his theme would be “The Eighteenth Century Novel”, and, at New Amsterdam, found himself in a ‘hotel’, in the dining- room of which was a notice: Second-hand Coffins for sale. The ‘hotel- keeper was also the local undertaker. At the University of Cape Town, Professor Lennox-Short was asked, in 1965, to introduce the English Language Tutorial Scheme, as a result of which English language B.A. tutorials increased from 35 to 103 weekly in 1966, and the failure-rate for English I Language (Morning) dropped from 46.3% in 1965 to 12,3% in 1967 and, from 59.4% in 1965 to 16,6% in 1967. Professor Lennox-Short became an associate professor in 1975. He has published 25 books, among them being Language, Literature and Life, Effective Expression, The Art of English, Brief Candle and English and South Africa. Recently he, with Professor David Welsh, has been asked to edit UCT 150, a volume to be published by David Philip to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the University of Cape Town. Professor Lennox-Short died in 1989 aged 75. 13 pages of copied research included.
