While the paper records of American and European churches and civil bodies are now generally available on line, DNA opens a new avenue of research into the period well before the advent of written records. And it is allowing people to make connections heretofore impossible to make. Recent historical examples are nothing short of amazing. When the bodies thought to be the last Russian Czar and his family, murdered in 1918, were discovered, a 1998 test using the DNA of Prince Philip proved conclusively that the bodies were indeed the Czar and his family. That is because Prince Philip and the Czarina Alexandra shared the same maternal line, and thus the same mitochondrial DNA. Even more remarkable was the "king in the car park," a body found under a parking lot in England thought to be King Richard III, killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. -
Effects of Land Use-Induced Vegetation and Topography Changes on Soil Chemistry in the Southern Alps (Ticino, Switzerland)
Plant, Soil and Environment, 66, 2020 (2): 73–80 Original Paper https://doi.org/10.17221/633/2019-PSE Effects of land use-induced vegetation and topography changes on soil chemistry in the Southern Alps (Ticino, Switzerland) Sebastian Vogel1*, Marco Conedera2 1Department Engineering for Plant Production, Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB), Potsdam, Germany 2Insubric Ecosystems Research Group, Swiss Federal Research Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape (WSL), Cadenazzo, Switzerland *Corresponding author: [email protected] Citation: Vogel S., Conedera M. (2020): Effects of land use-induced vegetation and topography changes on soil chemistry in the Southern Alps (Ticino, Switzerland). Plant Soil Environ., 66: 73–80. Abstract: Effects of land use changes on chemical soil properties were studied in a southern alpine valley of Ticino, Switzerland by analysing three different land cover-topography units: i( ) natural forested slopes (NFS); (ii) defores- ted, cultivated terraces (DCT), and (iii) reforested, abandoned terraces (RAT). Whereas NFS represents the natural reference state with negligible anthropogenic influence, DCT corresponds to intense agricultural utilization, and RAT refers to a post-cultural natural evolution after terrace cultivation. Land use-induced changes in vegetation cover and topography (i.e., terracing) had a clear influence on chemical soil properties. The presence or absence of the European chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.), one of the main soil acidifying agents in the study area, clearly affec- ted soil acidity, soil organic matter (SOM), and nutrient status. Compared to the vegetation change, terracing has a less obvious effect on soil chemistry. A greater effective rooting depth and a flat microtopography on terraces lead to a rapidly increased SOM accumulation due to better growing conditions for trees.
