The geographical range of the typically host-specific species of chewing lice (Phthiraptera) is often assumed to be similar to that of their hosts. We tested this assumption by reviewing the published records of twelve species of chewing lice parasitizing wild and domestic chicken, one of few bird species that occurs globally. We found that of the twelve species reviewed, eight appear to occur throughout the range of the host. This includes all the species considered to be native to wild chicken, except Oxylipeurus dentatus (Sugimoto, 1934). This species has only been reported from the native range of wild chicken in Southeast Asia and from parts of Central America and the Caribbean, where the host is introduced. -

Sixty-five animals were inspected and the lice were manually collected, preserved in 70% alcohol and taken to the Animal Parasitology Laboratory, School of Veterinary Medicine, Federal University of Pará, Brazil, for identification. The adult lice were identified Haematopinusas quadripertusus, and all the cattle examined were infested by at least one development stage of this ectoparasite. The specimens collected were located only on the tail in 80% (52/65) of the cattle, while they were around the eyes as well as on the ears and tail in 20% (13/65). -

Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

Thus, a particular species of chewing lice is often restricted either to a single host species or to a phylogenetically related species. About 560 species of these insects parasitize mammals exclusively. Cebidicola semiarmatus is one of these species, known to parasitize several primate species of the genus Aloautta. This paper presents the first record of C. semiarmatus parasitizing A. guariba clamintans. Key words: Ectoparasites, wildlife, insects, mammals. Resumen: Los piojos son parásitos especializados que desarrollan todo su ciclo de vida en el hospedador. Por esta razón, muchas veces una determinada especie de piojo masticador es específica de una especie de hospedador o de otras filogenéticamente cercanas próximas. Alrededor de 560 especies de piojos parasitan exclusivamente mamíferos. Cebidicola semiarmatus, es una de ellas, caracterizada por parasitar primates del género Aloautta. Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity, Fort Collins, CO 80521 Abstract: We are just now beginning to learn about the ectoparasites and helminth parasites of some owls of Oklahoma. Some recent contributions from our lab have attempted to help fill a previous void in that information. Here, we report, four taxa of ectoparasites and five helminth parasites from three species of owls in Oklahoma. They include two species of chewing lice (Strigiphilus syrnii and Kurodeia magna), two species of hippoboscid flies (Icosta americana and Ornithoica vicina), a trematode (Strigea elegans) and a cestode (Paruterina candelabraria) from barred owls (Strix varia), and three nematodes, Porrocaecum depressum from an eastern screech owl (Megascops asio), Capillaria sp. eggs from S. varia, and Capillaria tenuissima from a great horned owl (Bubo virginianus). BRIEFING PAPER ON INFESTATION OF LICE AMONG WILD CANIDS IN ALASKA Prepared for the Division Management Team by Howard N. Golden Ted H. Spraker Herman J. Griese Randall L. Zarnke Mark A. Masteller Donald E. Spalinger Bruce M. Bartley July 1999 ABSTRACT Several biological and social concerns regarding louse infestations in wild Alaskan canids were identified following the recently discovered infestation of lice on wolves (Canis lupus) and coyotes (C. latrans) in the Mat–Su Valley. The biting dog louse (Trichodectes canis) was first identified on a coyote and then on several wolves harvested on the Kenai Peninsula during the winters of 1981–82 and 1982–83. The department attempted to eliminate the louse infestation among the wild canids by capturing and treating them with injections of the antiparasitic drug ivermectin and with ivermectin-treated baits. This effort was not successful in stopping the spread of the infestation, because of the difficulty in catching and treating all infested animals, and funding was stopped precluding treatment after the second winter. In November and December 1998 trappers reported catching wolves and coyotes with evidence of lice in the Mat– Su Valley. Similar efforts to those on the Kenai resulted in all known infested wolves being treated. The results of trying to eliminate lice in coyotes with treated baits were not known. The operational cost of the effort in the Mat–Su Valley was $60,000. The rapid spread of lice among wolves on the Kenai and the recent outbreak in the Mat–Su Valley raises serious concerns that a similar infestation can happen elsewhere in the state. -

Strossmayer University of Osijek, Osijek, Croatia 2 Slovenian Museum of Natural History, Ljubljana, Slovenia Received: 17.10.2015 Accepted/Published Online: 24.06.2016 Final Version: 04.04.2017 Abstract: The present faunistic study of blood sucking lice (Phthiraptera: Anoplura) has resulted in the recording of the 4 species: Hoplopleura acanthopus (Burmeister, 1839); Ho. affinis (Burmeister, 1839); Polyplax serrata (Burmeister, 1839), and Haematopinus apri Goureau, 1866 newly reported for the fauna of Croatia. Thirteen species and 2 subspecies are currently known from Croatia, belonging to 6 families. Linognathidae and Haematopinidae are the best represented families, with four species each, followed by Hoplopleuridae and Polyplacidae with two species each, Pediculidae with two subspecies, and Pthiridae with one species. Blood sucking lice were collected from 18 different host species. Three taxa, one species, and two subspecies were recorded on the Homo sapiens Linnaeus, 1758. Two species were recorded on Apodemus agrarius (Pallas, 1771); A. sylvaticus (Linnaeus, 1758); Bos taurus Linnaeus, 1758; and Sus scrofa Linnaeus, 1758 per host species. On the remaining 13 host species, one Anoplura species was collected. The recorded species were collected from 17 localities covering 17 fields of 10 × 10 km on the UTM grid of Croatia.
