Sixty-five animals were inspected and the lice were manually collected, preserved in 70% alcohol and taken to the Animal Parasitology Laboratory, School of Veterinary Medicine, Federal University of Pará, Brazil, for identification. The adult lice were identified Haematopinusas quadripertusus, and all the cattle examined were infested by at least one development stage of this ectoparasite. The specimens collected were located only on the tail in 80% (52/65) of the cattle, while they were around the eyes as well as on the ears and tail in 20% (13/65). -

As a result of this attention, these disciplines have produced 12 a mature body of literature on host-symbiont interactions. In contrast, the discipline of symbiont 13 conservation is still in a foundational stage. Here, we aim to integrate methodologies on symbiont 14 coevolutionary biology with the perspective of conservation. We focus on host-symbiont 15 cophylogenies, because they have been widely used to study symbiont diversification history and 16 contain information on symbiont extinction. However, cophylogenetic information has never been 17 used nor adapted to the perspective of conservation. Here, we propose a new statistic, 18 “cophylogenetic extinction rate” (Ec), based on coevolutionary knowledge, that uses data from 19 event-based cophylogenetic analyses, and which could be informative to assess relative symbiont 20 extinction risks. Finally, we propose potential future research to further develop estimation of 21 symbiont extinction risk from cophylogenetic analyses and continue the integration of this existing 22 knowledge of coevolutionary biology and cophylogenetics into future symbiont conservation 23 studies and practices. 24 25 Keywords: coevolution, coextinction risk, conservation biology, cophylogenies, host-symbiont 26 interactions, parasites. -

Box 467, Wellington, New Zealand Abstract—An extensive survey of chewing lice from rock pigeon, Columba livia Gmelin, and mourning dove, Zenaida macroura (L.), carried out from 1994 to 2000 and from 2003 to 2006 in Manitoba, Canada, produced the following new records: Coloceras tovornikae Tendeiro for North America; Columbicola macrourae (Wilson), Hohorstiella lata (Piaget), H. paladinella Hill and Tuff, and Physconelloides zenaidurae (McGregor) for Canada; and Bonomiella columbae Emerson, Campanulotes compar (Burmeister), Columbicola baculoides (Paine), and C. columbae (L.) for Manitoba. We collected 25 418 lice of four species (C. compar, C. columbae, H. lata, and C. tovornikae) from 322 rock pigeons. The overall prevalence of infestation was 78.9%, 52.5%, and 23.3% for C. compar, C. columbae, and H. lata, respectively. Coloceras tovornikae was not discovered until 2003, after which its prevalence was 39.9% on 114 pigeons. We col- lected 1116 lice of five species (P. zenaidurae, C. baculoides, C. macrourae, H. paladinella, and B. columbae) from 117 mourning doves. Physconelloides zenaidurae was encountered most often (prevalence was 36.7%), while the prevalence of the other four species was 26.3%, 18.4%, 3.5%, and 2.6%, respectively. Thus, a particular species of chewing lice is often restricted either to a single host species or to a phylogenetically related species. About 560 species of these insects parasitize mammals exclusively. Cebidicola semiarmatus is one of these species, known to parasitize several primate species of the genus Aloautta. This paper presents the first record of C. semiarmatus parasitizing A. guariba clamintans. Key words: Ectoparasites, wildlife, insects, mammals. Resumen: Los piojos son parásitos especializados que desarrollan todo su ciclo de vida en el hospedador. Por esta razón, muchas veces una determinada especie de piojo masticador es específica de una especie de hospedador o de otras filogenéticamente cercanas próximas. Alrededor de 560 especies de piojos parasitan exclusivamente mamíferos. Cebidicola semiarmatus, es una de ellas, caracterizada por parasitar primates del género Aloautta. There are two species of this mite that cause disease in humans, including Demodex folliculorum, which is known as hair follicle mite, and Demodex brevis. This disease is more common in women than in men. Case Presentation: The patient is a 36-year-old woman living in one of the villages of Tabriz city who referred to a dermatologist following severe itching and hyperkeratosis (abundant dandruff) of the cheeks. Then, she was introduced to the laboratory for preparing a slide from a sample taken from the patient’s cheeks. A large number of Demodex mites were observed in the microscopic test of the sample. Conclusion: In patients referred to skin clinics with scaling and itching, especially in the head and face, the complication may be due to Demodex infection. Therefore, it is suggested that demodicosis be considered in differential diagnosis in such patients. BRIEFING PAPER ON INFESTATION OF LICE AMONG WILD CANIDS IN ALASKA Prepared for the Division Management Team by Howard N. Golden Ted H. Spraker Herman J. Griese Randall L. Zarnke Mark A. Masteller Donald E. Spalinger Bruce M. Bartley July 1999 ABSTRACT Several biological and social concerns regarding louse infestations in wild Alaskan canids were identified following the recently discovered infestation of lice on wolves (Canis lupus) and coyotes (C. latrans) in the Mat–Su Valley. The biting dog louse (Trichodectes canis) was first identified on a coyote and then on several wolves harvested on the Kenai Peninsula during the winters of 1981–82 and 1982–83. The department attempted to eliminate the louse infestation among the wild canids by capturing and treating them with injections of the antiparasitic drug ivermectin and with ivermectin-treated baits. This effort was not successful in stopping the spread of the infestation, because of the difficulty in catching and treating all infested animals, and funding was stopped precluding treatment after the second winter. In November and December 1998 trappers reported catching wolves and coyotes with evidence of lice in the Mat– Su Valley. Similar efforts to those on the Kenai resulted in all known infested wolves being treated. The results of trying to eliminate lice in coyotes with treated baits were not known. The operational cost of the effort in the Mat–Su Valley was $60,000. The rapid spread of lice among wolves on the Kenai and the recent outbreak in the Mat–Su Valley raises serious concerns that a similar infestation can happen elsewhere in the state. -
