Les compositeurs du XXe siècle n’ont pas échappé à la fascination des machines et, si la grande majorité d’entre eux n’utilise pas – directement ou indirectement – le bruit des machines, plusieurs d’entre eux ont cependant tenté, de différentes manières, de faire participer les bruits à leur œuvre. Nous avons observé quelques-unes de ces tentatives dans notre précédente étude.1 Il y eut le grand rêve de Russolo qu’il décrit dans son Art des Bruits. Il y eut aussi ceux qui s’inspirèrent des machines comme Honegger dans Pacific 2.3.1. Il y eut ceux qui osèrent d’audacieux collages dans des musiques que l’on peut qualifier de « mixtes » : nous pensons là à Déserts de Varèse. Il y eut bien sûr Schaeffer et la musique concrète, avec une obsession pour ce dernier : faire perdre à l’objet sonore issu du bruit toute référence explicite avec son origine, lui enlever son identité première.
