Durante el siglo concluy6 tambien la ocupacion del territorio insular. La montana fue conquistada por avidos pobladores que roturaron I la tierra y empresarios que la comercializaron en el fomento de una nueva cuilura agraria: la del cafe. Nuevas identidades --el hacendado criollo, el comerciante peninsular, los jornaleros, los esclavos libertos, los obreros de fin de siglo, los intelectuales- emitieron, desde sus particulares estaciones de vida y visiones de mundo, utopias para sus comunidades y el pais. Alentados por los cambios geopoliticos y econ6micos que propici6 el cicio revolucionario, 1776-1825. los criollos pucrtorriquciios se movilizaron a favor de mayores libertades desde las primeras decadas del siglo. Mientras Espaiia enfrentaba las fuerzas francesas de ocupaci6n y la mayoria de sus colonias en America proclamaban su independencia, Puerto Rico marcaba un derrotero distinto. La Isla no se sum6 a Ia revoluci6n hispanoamericana de independencia que estall6 en 1810, pero personeros criollos como Ram6n Power y Giralt, primer diputado puertorriqueiio a las Cortes espaiiolas, respaldaron demandas de indiscutible corte liberal.

    EL ARTE PUERTORRIQUEÑO DE PRINCIPIOS DEL SIGLO XX J. A. Torres Martinó Los primeros balbuceos culturales de la puertorriqueñidad ocurren aproximadamente a la mitad del siglo pasado. Se trata de obras que, a partir de 1843, se publican en San Juan y Barcelona a cortos intervalos entre sí y que han de ser los más notables ejemplos de un empeño decidido de diferenciación entre peninsulares e isleños. Primero será el Aguinaldo puertorriqueño de 1843 publicado en San Juan, luego el Álbum puertorriqueño de 1844 publicado en Barcelona, que incluye trabajos de Santiago Vidarte, uno de nuestros primeros poetas, y de Manuel Alonso, quien nos dará en 1849 la obra El gíbaro, iniciadora de nuestra literatura. Las obras citadas, junto al segundo Aguinaldo de 1846 y el Cancionero de Borinquen (Barcelona) del mismo año, hacen patente esa voluntad nacionalista, cuyas gestiones se intensificarán a medida que transcurra y finalice el siglo con el brusco y traumático cambio de soberanía. Aunque la irrefutable verdad histórica establezca que la invasión militar norteamericana de julio de 1898 contó con las simpatías generales del pueblo puertorriqueño1, también es cierto que el cuerpo espiritual de Puerto Rico se resintió visiblemente de aquel choque cultural. Junto con un régimen militar opresivo que duró dos años y la inmediata cancelación de la autonomía concedida a la Isla por España, las autoridades de Estados Unidos implantaron reformas educativas dirigidas a americanizar el país en el menor tiempo posible.2 La resistencia a esta agresión cultural en que se veían amenazadas de muerte las prerrogativas espirituales de la clase dominante, la asumieron automáticamente los artistas de las diversas disciplinas: literatos, músicos y pintores.

As a researcher interested in Puerto Ri- can art as history—as opposed to art history—I was introduced to Diógenes, one of the few artists who can navigate the art of the diaspora and in Puerto Rico given his long trajectory as an artist in both Puerto Rico and el Barrio. Diógenes is eager to share his extensive and precise knowledge of the history of art and how it intersects with the socio-political realities of Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans; for Claudia and me, it’s shocking how Diógenes recites dozens of facts--names, places, years, and so on—with near-impeccable precision. His personal story, like his art, is profoundly influenced by the political history of Puerto Rico and the art history of the world. The exhibition coincides with El Museo’s public reopening as well as the launch of El Museo’s 40th Anniversary festivities, which will continue all year. Nexus New York: Latin/American Artists in the Modern Metropolis explores the interactions between Caribbean and Latin American artists and U.S.-born and European artists working in New York in the early twentieth century, who together fomented many of that era’s most important avant-garde art movements. Nexus New York is the first exhibition to explore the profound way these artistic exchanges between Latino and non-Latino artists deeply impacted art and art movements in this city and throughout the world for years to come. The exhibition is also representative of El Museo’s mission to produce programming and new scholarship on the significant yet sometimes overlooked contributions made by Latino, Caribbean, and Latin American artists.
