Mission in PAPUA NEW GUINEA Sungwook & Hyangmee Lim 1 We are working for the SIL-PNG Aviation and the Ukarumpa International School 2 PAPUA NEW GUINEA Korea 3 PAPUA NEW GUINEA Ukarumpa 4 PAPUA NEW GUINEA NAME: The Independent State of Papua New Guinea Papua means ‘curled hair’ which is from Malesian, New Guinea means it looks like ‘Guinea people’ in Africa Area of land: Mainland and 600s Island Population: 7 million (2015) Language: English, Pidgin, Motu & 850 tribal languages Religion: Christianity 96% (Protestant & Catholic), others (4%) 5 What is SIL ? ❏ SIL (Summer Institute of Linguistics) ⇒ International Bible translation organization ⚫ SIL founded by William Cameron Townsend in 1934 - Began with summer camp for language study and Bible translation th ⚫ 500 translation work done in 2000 ⚫ More than 6000 missionaries from 50 countries 6 ❏ SIL-PNG (Papua New Guinea) Vision God’s Word, in every language, in every life. Mission Statement Knowing that God’s Word transforms lives, we will work together to strengthen the Papua New Guinean Church by supporting sustainable Bible translation, promoting Scripture engagement and fostering language development. 7 ❏ What does SIL do in PNG? ⚫ Bible Translations ⚫ Alphabet and Orthography Designs ⚫ Literacy ⚫ Equip Papua New Guineans to do translations ⚫ Community Support & Technical Trainings 8 My path to PAPUA NEW GUINEA 9 God’s Providence God directs all things toward His good purpose. Pr 16:9 Apr 2014 Visited Papua New Guinea for interview Jan 2015 Joined Wycliffe Korea, for mission training Aug 2015 Attended JAARS Orientation including ICC (Inter-cultural Communication Course) / Aviation Orientation Course Jan 2016 Sent to Papua New Guinea Apr 2016 Began work for SIL-PNG 19 Papua New Guinea New Missionary Pacific Orientation Course 20 Pacific Orientation Course ⚫ Jan – Apr 2016 ⚫ Learn PNG culture & language (Tok Pidgin) ⚫ Adaptation to the tropical environment - Climate, food, life style, village church ⚫ Experience village life First huge impact at the mission field ※ Met our God of Peace - Suffered from bugs, mosquitos and rats - Prayed and had devotional everyday - God protected us from the dangerous surroundings 21 Survival Training Tent Making Cultural and Language Classes Outdoor Cooking22 Village Life Lived one month at the village in the bushes Kitchenware Stayed at this hut Owner’s hut 23 Village Life Inside the hut, mosquito net was not effective. Even rat bit fingers while we were sleeping at night. Starting fire for cooking 24 Village Living Small stream is the only source for laundry, dishwashing and bathing. We shared with other villagers. 25 Village Life It was very difficult to stay at the village. It takes several hours to a couple days of hiking to the remote village from the air strip. 47 ❏ Mission Flights ⚫ Transport missionaries and local translators to/from the villages More than 600 bush airstrips and 10 paved runways in PNG The airstrip in the mountain ridge has steep slope. 48 ❏ Mission Flights ⚫ Medical Evacuation We do medevac flights to Cairns, Australia in emergencies. It is so hectic to prepare for a short notice flight. It normally takes 3-4 hours to do the paperwork to get oversea flight clearance approvals. 49 ❏ Mission Flights ⚫ Medical Evacuation Insufficient Equipment No night medevac flights.
