No two will be the same. And yet they are all Catholic! And what each pilgrim takes home with them is often the same: They find quiet and silence in chaos. They know God in a new way. PARISH LIFE

WORLD YOUTH DAY (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8)

I also prayed for those two years for God’s richest blessings on all those traveling, hosting and planning and all those I would meet along the way. I was sitting in my little chair and enjoying our “camp” and all the people around us. The sights. The sounds. The talking, the yelling, the fun and fellowship. “I’ve been praying for all these people,” I grinned to myself. “I didn’t know who they would be – but God did.” It was late afternoon, and I’d gone to the porta johns once earlier that morning. I put off going again trying to time liquid intake with the walk ahead. Not too long a walk but jammed with people it could be protracted, and once there I might be met with a long line. The decision to go is mixed with part experience and part blessing in timing. Finally, I’d pushed it off as long as I dared and asked George to accompany me. We wound our way along a single-file-width trail of open earth – the only ground not covered in tarps and plastic and people. We made it through the gate – receiving our ticket to get back in – and walked out on the avenue choked with pilgrims. We stopped at a row of spigots to refill our water bottles. Slowly, we passed through the first portable alumi- num fencing that when closed created a barrier along the road’s length, crossed the road and then prepared to enter through the second such fencing on the other side of the road- where the porta johns were. My days of concerts are long over. I struggle with the crowds, the long lines at the bathrooms, waiting to get in and waiting to get out. Waiting to see the Holy Father arrive days earlier was much like a concert – and the LAST thing I wanted to do, although many in our group did and were successful. I suddenly realized there were a large number of military police receiving animated orders from a superior who was directing them to spread out along the fencing at what looked like equal distances. One officer opened the fence for us to get to the porta johns and we walked through. After taking care of business, it became clear that no one was leaving the area or entering the area. The fences were closed. We were told that the Holy Father was coming! I could not believe it! I had chosen the right time to get up and walk from our “camp” to the porta johns. The push and pull of the crowd which could never have been timed by ME, was timed by God, to get me to the gate just as it closed. I could go to the bathroom which was RIGHT THERE – and because fewer people were on this side of the road – a sliver of land with a long row of porta johns – there were no crowds to fight. I had an empty bladder and a front row seat – right up against the fence – to watch the Holy Father pass by in his Mobile! I could not believe it. He passed by – we got photos – and prepared to head back. But the soldiers were not moving the fence. The Holy Father WAS COMING BACK! He circled the crowd and passed by us a SECOND TIME, driving straight in our direction. He was the leg of the letter “T” and we were right there at the intersection! I started laughing and looked to the sky! Two miracles! God gave me my two miracles! Amazing! And it showed me God’s sense of humor. He took into account all of the things that I said would get in the way of my wanting to see the Holy Father – timing the crowd, waiting behind tall people, pushing, shoving, having to go to the bathroom – and in his mercy made them all insignificant. I had a front row seat in a private suite! And another miracle story to share! And now, I have been thinking about what it is that God wants from me in the way I relate to and how I consider the Pope, the role of the Holy Father, its history and his history and my responsibility to it. That’s what it was all orchestrated for, I’ve no doubt in my mind. If in my stubbornness and arrogance and desire for comfort and control I wouldn’t go to the Pope, God would bring the Pope to me. I have no doubt he will reveal what he wants me to understand in a most timely manner. And I will listen. The next World Youth Day will be in July 2022 – to Portugal! It is open to all young people who will be age 16 at time of travel, through age 35. If you would like to be put on a non-obligatory reminder list to learn about what will be offered, when, costs, etc. call me at (248) 536- 1235. We don’t have those answers right now but when we do we’ll call you! Page 10 Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Farmington
