Scott t Abstract: Japan's Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties has been heralded as one of the most sophisticated and complete statutes of its kind and has been viewed as a model for other countries considering means to protect their ethnographic and cultural treasures. This Article examines the social, cultural, political, and legal influences antecedent to the promulgation of the statute and discusses the complexities inherent in composing legislation of this sort. The specific Japanese legislative and administrative efforts undertaken to protect national treasures prior to promulgation of the statute, and the political environment contemporaneous with its passage, are compiled, analyzed, and provided to the western audience.

  • Vincenzo Ragusa and the Technique of Bronze Casting in Japan at the Turn of the Nineteenth Century
chapter 6 From the Island of the Sun to the Empire of the Rising Sun: Vincenzo Ragusa and the Technique of Bronze Casting in Japan at the Turn of the Nineteenth Century Massimiliano Marafon Pecoraro On January 25, 1922 Antonio Ugo (1870–1950),1 a well-known sculptor from Palermo, reported on: [the] installation in the School of Art Applied to Industry of a section for lost-wax casting, so that we can have in Palermo a group of skilled found- ers of sculpture and the foundry does not need any special machinery but for only four burners and a few crucibles … It is painful that, to cast their works, the artists of the whole of Sicily must resort to the foundries of the continent.2 In Sicily, as in the rest of Europe, the process of lost-wax casting had come back into vogue during the nineteenth century after having been a widespread prac- tice in the Renaissance. Ugo’s words could deceive us into thinking that Sicily was not particularly advanced in the field of iron work, of which bronze cast- ing was a subset, but in order to better understand the situation we must step back even further than the 1800s, and appreciate the quality of the iron works, including bronze works, that enriched Sicilian Baroque architecture between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. With the birth of the Bourbon kingdom in 1734, the aristocracy moved from the countryside to the cities of the island. This urbanization brought about a period of great building activity, particularly in Palermo, where, until the end of the eighteenth century, numerous residential buildings enriched by shelves, 1 For a biography of Antonio Ugo, see Maria Antonietta Spadaro, “Antonio Ugo,” in Dizionario degli Artisti Siciliani, Luigi Sarullo, ed.

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN A combined physical–chemical and microbiological approach to unveil the fabrication, provenance, and state of conservation of the Kinkarakawa‑gami art Elena Piacenza1,2, Alessandro Presentato2*, Francesca Di Salvo3, Rosa Alduina2, Vittorio Ferrara1,2, Valeria Minore2, Antonio Giannusa4, Giuseppe Sancataldo5 & Delia Francesca Chillura Martino1,2* Kinkarakawa‑gami wallpapers are unique works of art produced in Japan between 1870 and 1905 and exported in European countries, although only few examples are nowadays present in Europe. So far, neither the wallpapers nor the composing materials have been characterised, limiting the efective conservation–restoration of these artefacts accounting also for the potential deteriogen efects of microorganisms populating them. In the present study, four Kinkarakawa‑gami wallpapers were analysed combining physical–chemical and microbiological approaches to obtain information regarding the artefacts’ manufacture, composition, dating, and their microbial community. The validity of these methodologies was verifed through a fne in blind statistical analysis, which allowed to identify trends and similarities within these important artefacts. The evidence gathered indicated that these wallpapers were generated between 1885 and 1889, during the so-called industrial production period. A wide range of organic (proteinaceous binders, natural waxes, pigments, and vegetable lacquers) and inorganic (tin foil and pigments) substances were used for the artefacts’ manufacture, contributing to their overall complexity, which also refects on the identifcation of a heterogeneous microbiota, often found in Eastern environmental matrices. Nevertheless, whether microorganisms inhabiting these wallpapers determined a detrimental or protective efect is not fully elucidated yet, thus constituting an aspect worth to be explored to deepen the knowledge needed for the conservation of Kinkarakawa‑gami over time.
