Martyrdom SCTR 112 Course Description: This course interrogates ancient and contemporary discourses on martyrdom in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Crucial questions to explore include: What is martyrdom and its relationship to ancient notions of a noble death? Why are notions of martyrdom so prevalent among Christian, Jewish, and Muslim fundamentalist groups today? How is the Torah, The Bible, and the Quran used to legitimate violence against the self and others? And, who counts as a Martyr and who does not? These questions intersect with various contemporary religious and political concerns including: religious violence, imperialism, colonialism, apocalyptic groups (e.g. Jonestown Branch Davidians), fundamentalism (Jewish, Christian, and Muslim), suicide bombings, church and school Shootings, and the rise of ISIS. In the last part of the course, students will also reflect on the multiplicity of ways in which martyrdom discourses have shaped their religious formation and spiritualities. Shema As Meditation Torah Reflections on Parashat Va’et-hanan Deuteronomy 3:23 – 7:11 13 Av, 5774 August 9, 2014 Our congregation holds a monthly Service of Comfort and Peace for people who are seeking a quiet, prayerful place during a time of illness, grief or anxiety. The ten or so people who attend sit in a circle; together we sing, meditate, pray and share some thoughts from the Torah. An elderly Russian couple attended our most recent service, accompanied by their grandson, a man in his 30’s who-- unlike his grandparents--spoke English. He explained that his worried grandparents were there to pray for another grandchild who was having a crisis in his life. At one point in the service we go around the circle, each person reading one sentence of a prayer in English. Participants are free to pass if they do not wish to read. The grandfather did not seem to understand much of what was happening, but as we went around the circle and it was his turn to read, he closed his eyes and said, “ Shema Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Ehad .” This man, like so many other Jews throughout the ages, turned to the Shema when all other words failed. We first hear the Shema from Moses as he addresses the Israelites in the Torah portion for this week (Deuteronomy 6:4). Moses realizes that life will not be easy, that the people he leads and their descendants will have many hardships, will experience spiritual and physical exile, will be lost and not know where to turn. -

Is there an Authentic Triennial Cycle of Torah Readings? RABBI LIONEL E. MOSES This paper is an appendix to the paper "Annual and Triennial Systems For Reading The Torah" by Rabbi Elliot Dorff, and was approved together with it on April 29, 1987 by a vote of seven in favor, four opposed, and two abstaining. Members voting in favor: Rabbis Isidoro Aizenberg, Ben Zion Bergman, Elliot N. Dorff, Richard L. Eisenberg, Mayer E. Rabinowitz, Seymour Siegel and Gordon Tucker. Members voting in opposition: Rabbis David H. Lincoln, Lionel E. Moses, Joel Roth and Steven Saltzman. Members abstaining: Rabbis David M. Feldman and George Pollak. Abstract In light of questions addressed to the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards from as early as 1961 and the preliminary answers given to these queries by the committee (Section I), this paper endeavors to review the sources (Section II), both talmudic and post-talmudic (Section Ila) and manuscript lists of sedarim (Section lib) to set the triennial cycle in its historical perspective. Section III of the paper establishes a list of seven halakhic parameters, based on Mishnah and Tosefta,for the reading of the Torah. The parameters are limited to these two authentically Palestinian sources because all data for a triennial cycle is Palestinian in origin and predates even the earliest post-Geonic law codices. It would thus be unfair, to say nothing of impossible, to try to fit a Palestinian triennial reading cycle to halakhic parameters which were both later in origin and developed outside its geographical sphere of influence. Finally in Section IV, six questions are asked regarding the institution of a triennial cycle in our day and in a short postscript, several desiderata are listed in order to put such a cycle into practice today. -
