July 30, 2001 / April 26, 2002 Lowney Turner Handy, writing teacher of James Jones and others, maintained a writing school in southern Illinois. Her teaching approach included the use of various works from her library which students had to read and copy by hand or by using a typewriter in the process of becoming familiar with accomplished writing styles. Most of the books listed below are fiction and poetry, although an occasional title in a different realm is also included. Many of the books are annotated by Handy with comments, sometimes on the pastedown, sometimes in the body of the work.. A few items, notably his own works, were gifts from James Jones. Also included in the collection are published works of other successful students, e.g., Jere Peacock., Tom Chamales, and Edwin Daly. These books were about to be discarded when Elizabeth Bevington, an antiquarian bookseller and member of the Friends of the Cunningham Memorial Library, retrieved them and donated them to the library as the Lowney Turner Handy Library Collection to be housed within the Rare Books Collection. Blackford Department of History ABSTRACT After World War I, the American film industry achieved international domi- nance and became a principal promoter of American cultural expansion, projecting images of America to the rest of the world. Japan was one of the few countries in which Hollywood lost its market control to the local industry, but its cultural exports were subjected to intense domestic debates over the meaning of Americanization. This dis- sertation examines the interplay of economics, culture, and power in U.S.-Japanese film trade before the Pacific War. Hollywood’s commercial expansion overseas was marked by internal disarray and weak industry-state relationships. Its vision of enlightened cooperation became doomed as American film companies hesitated to share information with one another and the U.S. government, while its trade association and local managers tended to see U.S. officials as potential rivals threatening their positions in foreign fields. The lack of cooperation also was a major trade problem in the Japanese film market. In general, American companies failed to defend or enhance their market position by joining forces with one another and cooperating with U.S. officials until they were forced to withdraw from Japan in December 1941.

Baumann This article first appeared in The Mystery and Adventure Series Review #43, summer 2010 Books As Time Machines It was more than half a century ago that I learned how to type. My parents had a Smith-Corona typewriter—manual, of course—that I used to write letters to my cousins. A few years later I took a “typing class” in junior high. Students were encouraged to practice “touch typing” and to aim for a high number of “words per minute”. There were distinctive sounds associated with typing that I can still hear in my memory. I remember the firm and rapid tap of the keys, much more “solid” than the soft burr of computer “keyboarding”. A tiny bell rang to warn me that the end of the line was coming; I would finish the word or insert a hyphen, and then move the platen from left to right with a quick whirring ratchet of motion. Frequently there was the sound of a sheet of paper being pulled out of the machine, either with a rip of frustration accompanied by an impatient crumple and toss, or a careful tug followed by setting the completed page aside; then another sheet was inserted with the roll of the platen until the paper was deftly positioned. Now and then I had to replace a spool of inked ribbon and clean the keys with an old toothbrush. Musing on these nearly vanished sounds, I put myself in the place of the writers of our series books, nearly all of whom surely wrote with typewriters.

Scholars or policymakers who identify themselves as realists, of course, do not all perfectly match the realism ideal type. We find, however, that the four assumptions identified with this perspective are useful as a general statement of the main lines of realist thought and the basis on which hypotheses and theories are developed. First, states are the principal or most important actors in an anarchical world lack- ing central legitimate governance. States represent the key units of analysis , whether one is dealing with ancient Greek city-states or modern nation-states. The study of international relations is the study of relations among these units, particularly major powers as they shape world politics (witness the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War) and engage in the costliest wars (World Wars I and II). Realists who use the concept of system usually refer to an international system of states. What of non-state actors? International organizations such as the United Nations may aspire to the status of independent actor, but from the realist perspective, this aspiration has not in fact been achieved to any significant degree. Realists tend to see international organizations as doing no more than their member states direct.

Thus begins the first book in a series of titles that has whetted the literary appetites of young readers for well over fifty years. The Secret of the Old Clock by Carolyn Keene was to set the tone of juvenile adventure stories that is still leading young folks into the joys of reading the standard classics of literature. Carolyn Keene has been writing the series books chronicling the adventures of Nancy Drew and the Dana Girls since 1929. With over 175 titles published, the author is still going strong, presently producing over fifteen new books each year. Her titles have been translated into at least twelve different lan­ guages, and sales records state that the volumes sold number in the hundreds of millions. More than the mystery of the endurance of such unlikely literature is the question of who Carolyn Keene is and how one person could possibly be the author of such a record number of "best-sellers." Numerous literary histories offer conflicting information concerning the life of Ms Keene. The one common fact is that there exists no actual person by that name. Carolyn Keene is a pseudonym for the author of the series books. Carolyn Keene was Edward Stratemeyer. Another source says that she was Harriet Adams. Yet others say that she was Edna Squire, Walter Karig, James Duncan Lawrence, Nancy Axelrad, Margaret Scherf, Grace Grote, and a plethora of others.
