The Buddhist World of Southeast Asia
PART 1 THE POPULAR TRADITION ll too often a textbook picture of Theravada Buddhism bears little Aresemblance to the actual practice of Buddhism in Southeast Asia. The lived traditions of Myanmar,1 Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Sri Lanka seem to distort and sometimes subvert the cardinal teachings of nibbana, the Four Noble Truths, or the Noble Eightfold Path familiar to the Western student of Buddhism.2 The observer enters a Theravada Buddhist culture to discover that ordination into the monastic order (sangha) may be motivated more by cultural convention or a young man’s sense of social obligation to his parents rather than the pursuit of transforming wisdom; that the peace and quiet sought by a meditating monk may be overwhelmed by the amplified rock music of a temple festival; that somewhat unkempt village temples outnum- ber tidy, well-organized monasteries; and that the Buddha, austerely imaged in the posture of meditation (hVbVY]^) or dispelling Mara’s powerful army (bVgVk^_VnV) is venerated more in the hope of gaining privilege and prestige, material gain, and protection on journeys than in the hope of nibbana. The apparent contradiction between the highest ideals and goals of Theravada Buddhism and the actual lived tradition in Southeast Asia has long perplexed Western scholars. Tai Manuscripts and Early Printed Books at the Library of Congress
Tai Manuscripts and Early Printed Books at the Library of Congress Ryan Wolfson-Ford Arizona State University Abstract—This article provides a comprehensive survey of Tai manuscripts held at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., USA. New items in the collection are highlighted. Some sense of the scope of the collection is also provided. The collection represents an important resource for researchers and the scholarly community. More importantly, it is a vital historical repository of the varied, but interrelated textual traditions and mental worlds of the Tai peoples. Introduction There are over 100 manuscripts in the Tai collection held at the Library of Congress Asia Division including many fine examples of illuminated or “painted” manuscripts. There are also rare early printed books from the 19th century documenting the emergence of printing. The oldest dated manuscript in the collection is an Old Lao manuscript dated 1194 of the lesser era, which corresponds roughly to 1832 in the Gregorian calendar. This collection documents a literate culture which has existed for centuries, but which still remains poorly known in the West. To the degree that this is due to a lack of original sources this collection contributes to making the Tai peoples of mainland Southeast Asia better known, and in their own unmediated words. The Tai manuscripts and early printed books of this collection are written in a variety of languages: Thai, Lao, Kham Mư̄ ang (Northern Thai), Shan, Tai Khoēn and Pāli. Besides Thai and Lao, the texts are written in a number of modern and esoteric scripts including Thai, Lao, Old Lao, Khǭm and various forms of Tham. -

Proposal for Thai Manuscript
Jo-Fan Huang Harvard University A Technical Examination of 7 Thai Manuscripts in the 18th, 19th, and 20th Centuries Abstract The ideology of Buddhism was taught through various art forms such as architecture, sculptures, murals, and manuscripts on both palm leafs and papers. Little has been studied on the materials and techniques of Thai manuscripts on paper (Samut khoi). A total of seven Thai manuscripts were selected from the Philip Hofer Collection in the Asian Department of the Harvard University Art Museums for technical examination and art historical research. The project focuses on an 18th century manuscript, Illustrated Tales from Jataka; six other manuscripts from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries (2 each) were selected for comparison. The scope of the project includes researching historical information on Thai manuscripts and how political movement and commerce effected the artists’ choice for painting materials. The techniques include visual examination, fiber analysis, ultraviolet and infrared light examination, non-destructive micro-x-ray fluorescence (XRF), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The analyses indicate the presence of huntite, lead white, calcite, indigo, red lead, vermilion, gamboge, ultramarine, and red earth in the 18th century manuscripts. In the 19th and 20th century manuscripts, the analyses indicate lead white, calcite, red lead, vermilion, gamboges, chrome yellow, emerald green and Prussian blue, as well as possible barium sulfate, titanium white, and viridian. Lead white, gold leaf, and vermilion were found consistently in all seven manuscripts. The results suggest that different blue pigments were used in different centuries: indigo in the 18th century, ultramarine and Prussian blue in the 19th century and Prussian blue alone in the 20th century. -

Those Strange-Looking Monks in Phra Malai Manuscript Paintings: Voices of the Text

CONNECTIVITY, CONFLICT AND CONUNDRUMS OF THAI STUDIES 15-18 JULY 2017, CHIANG MAI, THAILAND Those Strange-Looking Monks in Phra Malai Manuscript Paintings: Voices of The Text Brereton, Bonnie Pacala Center for Research on Plurality in the Mekong Region Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Khon Kaen University Thailand -------------------------------------------- Abstract One of the most popular texts written and illustrated on accordion-folded paper manuscripts (samut khoi) is Phra Malai Klon Suat (PMKS), the vernacular version of the story of the magical monk who travelled to hell and heaven. The miniature paintings in these manuscripts depict key scenes from the story as well as pairs of seated monks sometimes with legs crossed and a talabat in their hands, and others in very unusual postures with strange facial expressions. Several Western various scholars have offered interpretations of these monk figures based on a number of factors: art historical analysis of the paintings, the opinions of other Western scholars, and their own guesses and assumptions. This paper offers a different interpretation of the monks – one that draws on the writings of Thai scholars, interviews with monks, personal communications with people who have sponsored recitations for their deceased relatives, and my experiences of listening to the text being chanted. In addition, other factors include the historical context of the klon suat genre, specific features of the text, the text’s function and usage, and the role of the monks and lay chanters.
