    PRENDAS AND PULPERÍAS: THE FABRIC OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD CREDIT BUSINESS IN MEXICO CITY, 1780S-1830S Marie FRANCOIS At the pulpería (grocery store) at the corner of the Aduana Vieja bridge and calle San Felipe de Jesús in the south of the Mexico City downtown area, regular customers and neighbors sought small loans from owner don Miguel Domínguez.1 Residents in the neighborhood might pawn something like a jacket made of cotton print cloth, as Ygnacia Ruiz did in the summer of 1811 for 6 reales.2 Ygnacia lived a block and a half away from the corner store at the Aduana Vieja bridge, near the Parque del Conde. She was a 50-year-old Spanish widow, living in the house headed by her 30-year-old son, licenciado don Francisco Alvarez, with her other adult children, two daughters and another son, and an In- dian servant. Ygnacias next door neighbor, María Encarnación Rosales, a 19-year-old criolla (of European heritage but born in the Americas) married to a 30-year-old criollo, also frequented Domínguez store to pawn household goods.3 María Rosales had two articles of clothing in pawn with Domínguez in October of 1811, printed petticoats for 4 1/2 reales, and a black rebozo for 6 1/2 reales. Real property owners in the city often turned to the Church for loans.4 But for most residents who rented their living space, the corner stores were their major resource. While secular, these institutions often had patron saints. The Domínguez pulpería held Our Lady of Guadalupe as its patroness, and her antique image was listed first in a description of its interior contents.

    Map of Tlalpan The word TLALPAN comes from two náhuatl-origin words: Tlalli- earth and Pan- on; nevertheless, it has been added the word “Firme” (Firm), and it stayed as “Place of Firm Earth”. There, the first human settlement at the Mexico’s basin was recorded: Cuicuilco, which civilization was finished after volcano Xitle’s erup- tion. Tlalpan is located towards the south of the Federal District and has a 310-km surface. Places of interest at Tlalpan’s Historical Center: Tlalpan’s History Museum (Museo de Historia de Tlalpan) (1) – The History Museum of Tlalpan is found at the building known as “La Casona” in English “The Big House”. That construction dates back to 1874, and is considered a historical monument since 1986 by the National Institution of Anthropology and History. In some occasions, diverse artistic manifestations are offered there. Location: Plaza de la Constitución 10, Col. Centro de Tlalpan. 54859048. House of the Count of Regla (Casa del Conde de Regla) (2) – It Dates back to the 18th century and it belonged to the Count of Regla Mr. Pedro Romero de Terreros, a rich miner that worked the mountain of Hidalgo and gave origin to the Nacional Monte de Piedad (for loans).
