002-003 224197-1.indd 2 11/1/2016 10:30:18 AM Schools need to be healthy places. Being a boarding and day school, this is even more essential for King's-Edgehill School. We must Headmaster, Joe Seagram be more than a community that offers healthy food and daily exercise though. We must provide a school culture and environment which supports emotional, spiritual, ethical, and social health as well. In our 228 year history, there may have never been a young generation that is unhealthier and more at risk than the one currently residing on our planet. We need to make a conscious effort to help.

When in rural Tanzania this past March Break our students remarked upon the emotional health of the children we met. Miles and dusty miles away from the 'luxuries' of running water and electricity, living traditionally in huts made of mud and sticks, the Maasai families we encountered had, by our standards, next to nothing. And yet the children were happy and friendly and resourceful. During our evening discussions, the King's-Edgehill School students described how back home so many young people have "issues" and seem so unhappy. These observations were confirmed by a recently released study of high school students that reported the astounding statistic: one third of high school students suffer from psychological distress. Furthermore, one in five teenagers in Ontario has visited a mental health professional in the last year. There is no reason to believe Nova Scotians are any different. Are the days of a carefree childhood gone?

The world is full of contradictions. At the same time as child poverty and world hunger is on the rise, so too is childhood obesity and diabetes. In Canada, the prevalence of diabetes is expected to rise 44% in the next 10 years. Canadians, including the younger generation, need to eat better and exercise more. The social costs, let alone the monetary cost of health care for an unhealthy population, are significant.

I am pleased to see that so many King's- Edgehill Alumni are involved in occupations of health and wellness. Caring for others goes right to the heart of our mission statement which speaks to the importance of gentleness, dignity and respect. Great schools offer more than essential lessons in the classroom; they provide an emotionally and physically safe environment which allows students to acquire healthy habits of mind, spirit, and body. Ex Officio Dr. Karen Mann, Chair Mr. Joseph Seagram, Headmaster Mr. Steven Porter, Treasurer Mr. Steven Porter, Director of Finance Mr. Trevor Hughes, Secretary It all seems so normal now to see boys in blue and girls in red roam the KES campus. It is Dr. Alex Jurgens normal now to see boys and girls together in one cadet corps, and it is normal for me to Mr. Joe Seagram hand out diplomas to boys in kilts and girls in white tunics. My graduation year was the Mr. Chris Strickey first when such sights were seen, which is a personally stark reminder of the passing of 40 Mrs. Penny Taylor years, and marked the beginning of what has become our new normal. Mr. Richard Oland Mrs. Heather Strickey In my graduation year, the changes occasioned by the introduction of girls to the campus Mr. Alfred Poon were felt everywhere, in the classrooms, in chapel, on the sports fields and on the cadet Mr. Yun Xu (Vincent) Han grounds. I remember the sense of lift, of excitement tinged with incredulity and added Mr. George Rogers vitality that the changes brought to the School, even as the School struggled to adapt to Ms. Lisa Smith the significance of those changes. When I try to describe in one sentence the effect of those changes on the School as I knew it 40 years ago, I can do no better than quote the Rev'd David Curry in his 2016 Cadet Parade Reflections on the 'Year of Edgehill': "Edgehill, quite simply, brought grace and class, a certain kind of elegance and dignity". Founded in 1891 by the Diocese of Nova Scotia and Fredericton for the purpose of providing a high-class education in all subjects, Edgehill has been bringing grace and class together with a certain kind of elegance and dignity for 125 years, and we celebrate this significant milestone.

Most unfortunately, the old Edgehill building was hit by lightning this summer and destroyed by fire. The building was an iconic Windsor landmark and its loss is felt by the whole Town. It is an ironic twist to lose this icon in a year when we celebrate Edgehill's 125th.

It is now the third straight year when King's-Edgehill School has been full, and School health is driven by successful enrollment. More than twenty countries are represented by this year's enrollment and I understand the number to be the highest the School has yet seen.

I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Karen Mann, and I have the honour of chairing the The Inglis Education Foundation. As many of you will know, the Foundation was formed in 2012, replacing the King's-Edgehill School Alumni Association (KESAA). The Foundation's mission is to: - safeguard the investments of the School and Alumni endowment funds - promote Alumni relations - actively fundraise and support scholarships and academic excellence at King's-Edgehill School On June 17th, 2016, and with the support of the School, the Foundation hosted a dinner for the parents of the graduating class, along with other alumni guests. We had a wonderful evening, where parents were able to meet other parents -- to reconnect with those they knew, and perhaps to meet for the first time, parents of their children's friends. It was truly a memorable evening which enabled all of us present to celebrate the achievements of the graduates -- who were themselves off celebrating at their prom! It was a wonderful way to meet and thank parents who have supported the School, and to introduce them to the Foundation and our mission. Many of our notable Alumni were able to attend the School due to the support of the Inglis Education Foundation and its predecessor, the KESAA. We want to ensure that these opportunities continue to be available to support students to attend KES and to be part of the KES community. If you wish to help us continue this fine tradition of supporting Dr. Mann presenting to Drum Major Carla du Toit. exceptional students, please contact the Advancement Office at [email protected] or call 902-798-2278, ext. 2225.

Drill Sergeant-Major Master Warrant Officer Katrena Thomas assembled the cadets of the 254 and marched them in formation onto Jakeman Field for the final parade of 2016. Earlier that day, the Corps had marched through the streets of Windsor to Christ Church for the Annual Church Parade. Looking sharp in their Highland regalia, our Cadets impressed the people of Windsor with their sharp drill and their immaculate dress and deportment. Once the Corps had formed on Jakeman Field, the School Colour Party was marched on and the Corps paid the final salute to the Queen's and Regimental Colours. The Reviewing Officer, Lady Ann (Creighton) Day, arrived and, accompanied by the Regimental Sergeant-Major Chief Warrant Officer, Emma Dufour, conducted the Inspection. This was carried out with all of the pomp and circumstance due to the Corps and this fine Edgehill Old Girl (1952-55). Twenty-two cadets received awards with the most notable being Pipe Major Warrant Officer Emma Belliveau who was recognized as the Top Piper in Canada and given the Lieutenant-General Quinn Award for Music Excellence. It was another fine year in the annals of the fabled 254!

At this year's Annual Cadet Mess Dinner, a 'Departure with Dignity' ceremony was held to bid farewell to two retiring officers, Captain Henri Medina who was with the Cadet Programme for 27 years and 2nd Lieutenant Debra Medina for 26 years. The Medinas are retired but were dearly loved, long-term teachers at the School. Henri taught French from 1975-2011 and was head coach of the School's Biathlon programme. Debra taught Mathematics from 1977-2010, brought the IB Programme to the School, and she was also a Coach for the School's Biathlon programme.

The cast, crew and pit band for King's-Edgehill School's production of Legally Blonde worked hard on this fun-filled musical complete with toe-tapping music, energetic dances, and larger-than-life characters. This fabulously fun show follows the transformation of sorority girl Elle Woods (played by Carla du Toit) throughout her journey of self-discovery. She meets people who help her grow and learn, and ultimately, she defies expectations as she follows her dreams with the resonating message of "to thine own self be true."

Mazel tov! This year's Junior School musical production, Fiddler on the Roof, was a tremendous success! On Opening Night our stage was alive with singing and dancing as a cast of 33 Junior School students entertained audiences of all ages with this classic and upbeat production. The story highlights the struggle of the poor dairy farmer, Tevye (Max Cole), whose desire to protect his five daughters and uphold his deep-rooted traditions are confronted by changing and challenging times. The drama comes to life on stage with a very talented cast, and with show-stopping hits like "Matchmaker, Matchmaker", "If I Were a Rich Man", and "Sunrise, Sunset", the performances had the polish of a Broadway show! Special thanks are extended to each member of the cast and crew, Ms. Nicole Barrett, our pianist, Ms. Sandy Stewart, Ms. Jazlyn Alchin, and the many hands that made this show such a success. Of course, none of this would be possible without the vision and exceptional talents of our director Ms. Toven MacLean. From the casting to the acting, singing, choreography, set design, and costumes, it truly was first-rate.

010-011 224197-1.indd 11 11/1/2016 10:24:47 AM Adventure to Central Europe by Jenna Pennington, Senior School Teacher

We embarked on an adventure to Central Europe and spent two weeks exploring the cities of Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria. Every day our breath was taken by the sights, sounds and tastes of this amazing region of the world. From evening lights viewed from a dinner cruise down the Danube, chocolate tasted in the Naschtmarkt of Vienna, warm Trdelnik filled with Nutella enjoyed while walking the Easter markets of Prague or wide eyed looking at the amazing graffiti art of Berlin, our senses were constantly tingling. It is a unanimous statement that this trip was truly one of a lifetime. The friends and memories will last a lifetime, and I know that the travel spark was ignited in each of us.

012-013 224197-1.indd 12 11/1/2016 10:24:08 AM KES Leadership Expedition to Africa by Joe Seagram, Headmaster The fourth KES Leadership Expedition to Africa was characterized by its youth. Varying in ages from twelve to seventeen, with eleven in the Junior School, it was the youngest group of students we have ever had in our care overseas. The itinerary was both exciting and challenging: almost three weeks of living out of a backpack, sleeping in a tent on the ground, no hot showers, electricity, or any kind of electronics (no phones or iPods). While on safari, we camped in magnificent national parks and immersed ourselves in the midday sights and midnight sounds of nature. While sweating through the construction by hand of two classrooms in a Maasai village by Lake Natron, we were exposed to the searing desert heat found in the depths of Tanzania's Rift Valley. For the six days spent climbing to the summit of Kilimanjaro, life was reduced to the simple daily task of putting one foot in front of the other thousands of times an hour for hours on end. Given that our lives were so different and elemental compared to normal (no wifi, no McDonalds, no air conditioning), we all quickly learned what we needed to be comfortable and happy. I was thrilled to see that we were not a "needy" group. A deck of cards, a considerate tent mate, good conversation, socks to keep our hands from blistering on the shovels and pick axe handles (!), an almost cold Coke or Fanta after a hard morning's work, a frisbee: these were all we really needed to be carefree and content. Oh...I forgot one item: Nutella! It seems that Nutella (a chocolate hazelnut spread) has the power to lift spirits, fuel the body, and finally solve World Peace. How important is Nutella? Well, while other groups on Kilimanjaro were struggling through altitude illness, the extremes of cold and heat, blistered feet and sunburned skin, our students were struggling through Nutella deprivation. We ran out on Day Two. Fortunately we survived until Day Five when our scheduled food re-supply brought four more jars - just in time for our midnight meal before our summit bid. It must have made a difference as every student made it to the top!

Meet Brenda MacDonald Lona, (2011-17) boarding student, KES "lifer", Prefect, and 254 Cadet Sergeant from Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. Brenda is an exceptional young woman whose positive attitude, courageous spirit and kind heart have earned her many accolades and have shown the importance of living life to the fullest. Brenda lives with Neurofibromatosis-1, a condition that causes tumours to grow throughout the body and which has resulted in a brain tumour, leaving Brenda legally blind. In spite of this diagnosis, she seizes every opportunity to challenge herself and to make a positive difference for others. Seeing only possibilities and never disabilities, she urges us all "never to judge others by perceptions and preconceived ideas", championing this philosophy through her actions. At 17, Brenda's list of accomplishments is impressive. During her past five years at KES, she has earned many scholarships and awards including: a KES Gold Service Award, a Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, the Benedict Wong Award for her love of learning, the Veronica Connelly Prize for excellence in West Hants historical research, the Yorston Smallwood Trophy as the best Junior cadet, the Meet Brenda MacDonald Brendan Smith Scholarship for thinking beyond herself and the APSEA Sports Award for athletic success as a blind student. In 2012, Brenda by Taya Shields, Junior School Director became a Wish Kid as part of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and, after travelling to Paris, France, to experience her personal Wish, she returned with a focus on helping children with life threatening diseases. In 2014, Brenda raised over $2000 for the Make-A-Wish Rope for Hope campaign by rappelling down a 22-story high rise and raising awareness of the Foundation on a local television station. Her courageous spirit shows no end. In recent years, Brenda's athletic dreams became her focus and, though she had never been on skis before her arrival at KES, her progress in this sport was extraordinary. Within two years, Brenda was named as part of the Nova Scotia Para-Alpine Ski Team and competed at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in , earning 4th and 6th place standings. The following year saw Brenda on the International Para-Alpine Ski circuit. Not surprisingly, her remarkable Gold performances in Giant Slalom at IPCAS competition in New Hampshire, USA, got noticed and Brenda was named the 2016 Nova Scotia RICOH Alpine Ski Athlete of the Year. Indeed, there is nothing impossible for this extraordinary young woman. Globally minded, culturally aware, and interested in social justice, While she continues to conquer impressive personal goals, her greatest satisfaction comes from motivating others and connecting with kindness. Perhaps her outlook can best be expressed in her favourite quote from Helen Keller: "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched they must be felt with the heart".

Meet Yifan "Evan" Xie by Chris Strickey, Admissions Director In David Baldacci's book Memory Man, there is a line that talks about how remarkable it is to be recognized as an International Grand Master of Memory. As the book indicates, in a world with a population of 7 billion people, there are only about 150 people who have earned this recognition. At the World Memory Championships in December 2015, Grade 10 student Yifan "Evan" Xie (2014-18) joined this exclusive group by achieving the Grand Master of Memory title and, in the process, became one the youngest people in the world to achieve this honour. To be recognized as an International Grand Master of Memory, a person must memorize the following three feats at the annual competition: 1) a minimum of 1000 digits in random sequence in one hour, 2) a minimum of 12 decks of randomly shuffled cards in one hour, and 3) one deck of cards in less than 2 minutes. Evan went well beyond the minimum as he successfully memorized 1180 digits in one hour, memorized 12 decks of cards in one hour and memorized a single deck of poker cards in 32.275 seconds, which is not far from the world record. Evan received his award from the Prince and Princess of Poland. Evan graciously accommodated more than 20 media requests for interviews and has been featured locally, provincially, nationally and internationally. He is an inspiration for all of us to work hard and follow our dreams.

Meet Meredith Chambers by Phillip Hadley, Track Coach

We have all seen the gifted athlete who barely tries in practice, yet is able to vanquish all foes on the field. Rare is the athlete, or the academic, who has that beautiful combination of natural ability and a tenacious work ethic. Meet, Meredith Chambers (2012-2018). If you haven't had the pleasure of meeting Meredith, (and I choose that noun with intention), know that she is completely without pretense, ever-so-slightly shy in a charming way, yet straight of spine and eyes and smile clearly focused your way; you know that this is a confident young woman. Through our track and field championship rounds of Districts, Regionals and Provincials, Meredith ran 9 individual races: three each of 800m, 1500m, and 3000m. She earned nine 1st place finishes and demolished 5 records along the way (and placing atop the Wall of Payne, of course). Before and after each of those races you could see Meredith remaining calm, giving out 'hellos' and congratulations; highlighting the best of sportsmanship. Her achievements in the classroom are no less spectacular as her overall average is one of the highest in the School. At our most recent prize day, Meredith earned the John Frederick Simpson Brown Memorial Scholarship (dedication to academics and extracurriculars, hardworking, well rounded, respected and shows interest in the Science field). If you are visiting campus and would like to run with Meredith and the rest of the Track and Field team or our Cross Country team, consider yourself invited. If Meredith is the first to greet you, then I know you will feel welcomed - good luck keeping her pace.

Meet Emma Belliveau by Kathy Bonang, Communications

Emma Belliveau (2009-16) was a student at KES from November of her Grade 6 year until her graduation in June of 2016. During that time, Emma received numerous academic awards and she had the highest academic average in her class every year (see the Prize Day page for the complete prize list for this year). She participated in both the concert and stage bands at KES and was either on stage or in the pit band of every performance during her tenure. She is currently completing the theory requirements to complete her Grade 10 Royal Conservatory of Music in Piano performance. While maintaining a strong commitment to her academics, Emma earned her Silver Duke of Edinburgh award by volunteering in the community and is currently working on her Gold level award. Thanks to Mr. DeCoste and his Robotics Club, Emma received medals at both Robofest and the World Robotics Olympiad in Montreal. It was through the KES Cadet programme that Emma found her greatest passion -- Bagpiping. She began to play in Grade 7, and started attending cadet camp in Gagetown each summer beginning in Grade 8. She received the ANAVETS medal in 2014 for outstanding cadet service, and for the past two summers, she has been a staff cadet at Gagetown, this year as her company's Master Warrant Officer. She extended her bagpiping beyond the School, joining the TriService Cadet band based out of Truro. Through this organization, Emma has piped for the past three years at the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo and even learned a bit of highland dancing this year! At this year's KES Annual Cadet Inspection, Emma was presented with the award for being the Top Army Cadet Piper in Canada. Emma applied to Universities both in the United States and Canada for the fall. She received six-figure scholarship offers from both the University of Southern California and RPI, and made the wait-lists for both Princeton and Harvard. She has chosen to follow a path to Waterloo University for their Nanotechnology Engineering co-op programme. She is also planning to continue to pursue her bagpiping with local competition bands in the Waterloo Region. Emma credits King's-Edgehill with providing her with so many opportunities beyond the classroom that have made and will continue to make such a huge impact in her life.

022-023 224197-1.indd 22 11/2/2016 8:28:00 AM The End of an Era - Darcy Walsh Retires by Taya Shields, Junior School Director (colleague for 33 years)

Things won are done; joy's soul lies in the doing." William Shakespeare Darcy Walsh's impressive thirty-six year career at King's-Edgehill School is over, but his legacy certainly lives on. For Darcy, it was all about the journey, a day-to-day commitment to the core principles that he first learned and valued as a graduate of King's Collegiate in 1976, just months before King's and Edgehill amalgamated. His was a career which influenced over a thousand Political Science and History students, inspired another thousand athletes to train harder than they knew possible, and taught the many called to his office those important and memorable "life lessons". His commitment to King's- Edgehill School went far beyond his roles over the past four decades as houseparent, teacher, coach, Athletic Director, Dean of Residences, and Deputy Headmaster for the past twenty-one years. For Darcy, his influential career was never seen as a job, but rather, a wonderful way of life. It was on this campus that daughters Ashley (2000) and Jackie (2003) were raised and educated, and in Hensley Memorial Chapel that he and his wife Lisa (Myers-staff 2004-07) began their married life together, joyfully welcoming twin sons, Sawyer and Finn (KES 2030), to their Buckle House home in 2012.

It is rare to understand the meaning of commitment as Darcy has and to offer such loyal dedication. During his significant tenure at King's-Edgehill, Darcy's institutional wisdom and belief in the School's founding principles served as a beacon for all. Darcy lived a standard of excellence that permeated every aspect of the School, and which was nourished by a daily commitment to community life. "It is the little things that matter," he told me when he was packing up his belongings just days before he left campus. Darcy lived this philosophy. He was the first at breakfast in Stanfield Hall/McLellan Annex each morning by 7am, ready to listen to and advise the house parents on the matters of the day, and the first to greet students and staff in the Chapel receiving line. His presence was felt at every School function, and at any time, on any weekend, when his sage advice was needed. Darcy knew that the small things were important like being on time, finishing what was started, proper School dress, and remembering to say thank you. He believed that the accumulation of such daily practices had a mighty impact, and never missed an opportunity to point out their importance in the education of young men and women.

Passionate about sport and competition, Darcy valued the lessons of discipline and character that coaching provided for his student- athletes over the past thirty-six years. A versatile athlete, he coached many sports during this time (usually three each year); but, his contributions to boys' and girls' soccer and hockey were paramount. He coached teams to numerous Regional Championships, eight Division-III Provincial Soccer Championships, one Division-III Boys' Hockey Championship and five Division-I Boys' Provincial Hockey Championships. As Athletic Director from 1991-1995, Darcy's vision and leadership encouraged the shift from Division-III to Division-I play, with several of our KES teams stepping up to compete against the largest schools in the province. Darcy served two terms as District Coordinator of the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation as well, and was an influential and respected contributor to this organization.

His best advice in life, as in golf, is never to keep score. And although his hole-in-one at #8 on the Avon Valley Golf Course ranks at the top of his non-existent score card, his contributions to King's-Edgehill School far exceed this impressive feat. Darcy Walsh is a true KES legend. It is with much gratitude and heartfelt best wishes that we congratulate him on his retirement from King's-Edgehill School. No doubt, many new adventures and much happiness await as Darcy and Lisa head west to Lloydminster, , for Lisa's two-year work contract. With Finn and Sawyer eager to explore all the West has to offer, it will not be a typical restful start to retirement life for Darcy. One thing is certain: Darcy's life-long association with King's-Edgehill School will continue; there will be more opportunities to connect personally with Alumni, now from the West to the East.

022-023 224197-1.indd 23 11/1/2016 10:22:42 AM Charles Robert Baird (1951-52), PhD, P Eng A Man For All Seasons by Heather Strickey, Advancement Director Charles Robert (Bob) Baird, has been a fixture around the KES campus for more than 60 years. Bob arrived at KCS in 1951 when his parents told him in very clear terms that he would be going to KCS for his final year of high school. Luckily, Bob wasn't upset by this proclamation. In fact, he revelled in competing against his former Windsor teammates in Hockey, Rugby and Cross Country Running. Although Bob made the most of his time at KCS in the classroom; one of Bob's favourite KCS memories was marching as a drummer with the entire cadet corps in the Apple Blossom Parade enticing admiration from all spectators. Who wouldn't be wowed by that spectacle? Following Grade 11 at KCS, Bob left Windsor in the fall of 1952 for to undertake a diploma in Engineering. Following his diploma, Bob completed a Bachelor of Engineering at the Nova Scotia Technical College. Wanting to put his education to work, Bob took off for Peterborough where he worked first with General Electric and then joined Milltronics Ltd. as Chief Engineer. In this role, Bob traveled extensively to exotic locales like Tanzania, South Africa and Yugoslavia. Eventually, higher learning would lure him away from Peterborough. Bob received his MSc at UBC and then, after teaching at NSTC for three years, continued his graduate studies and teaching at UNB earning a PhD in Electrical Engineering in 1974. Bob continued to teach at "Tech," the US Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California and Dalhousie. He officially retired from Dalhousie in 1994 but continued to teach as an Adjunct Professor until 2014. Having always worked professionally as a consultant, Bob founded Synergetic Engineering Associates Inc with Dr. Charles Miller in 1982 and continues as its President. He has served as the President of Engineers Nova Scotia and represented the Association on the Board of the national organization, the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers, now called Engineers Canada. So, how did KES entice this busy professional back into the fold? Bob is the second longest serving Board Member the School has ever had with 29 years of service. Many moons ago, Bob got a call from the Chairman of the Board, Gordon Cooper (KCS 1923-1925), who asked if Bob could put his engineering skills to work and determine why the light covers in the gym were falling out. He discovered that there was a problem with the light enclosures that could be easily fixed. Shortly after, Bob was asked to consider serving on the KES Board of Governors. So, in 1986, Bob joined the Board. He served on the Board of Governors from 1986-2015 and during his tenure was the Board Chair from 1991-1997, chaired and served on many committees including the Nominating, Executive, Personnel, Development, Energy, Building and Property, and Strategic Planning Committees.

Just in case you were thinking Bob is an all work, no fun kind of guy, you need to know that he met the lovely Maxine while working in Peterborough in the 1950s. They married in 1961 and four sons, two daughters, seven grandsons, four granddaughters and many dogs later, they are still happily married and incredibly busy. Maxine and Bob visit their family who are spread around North America and also greatly enjoy spending time with their grandchildren. Bob is a keen woodworker, a dabbler in painting, and, only recently, has been enjoying growing grapes and hops. After meeting with Bob in May, I came away with the distinct notion that Bob doesn't plan to slow down any time soon. Even though Bob has retired from the KES Board of Governors, he still can find time for his alma mater. He is a mentor and regular member of our KES Career Nights where he talks to KES students about careers in engineering. Bob believes in our School. "There is virtually nothing here that hasn't improved significantly over the years." I asked Bob is he had any advice to impart to our current generation of students and young Alumni and he shared, "Your time at KES has prepared you to do well; however, doing well is not enough. It is also important to do good, the world needs more people doing good."

Thank-you, C. Robert Baird. You have made our School better by helping govern it these past 29 years and by acting as a mentor to our young and future Alumni.

024-025 224197-1.indd 24 11/1/2016 10:22:34 AM Dave Andrews - For the Love of Hockey

David Andrews (1961-66) was featured this winter as the 16th most influential person in hockey by The Hockey News. Dave Andrews has had a long hockey career as player, coach and executive. Today, he is the President of the American Hockey League, but his love for hockey dates back to his days at KES (KCS) when, in 1966, he played on a team that won the Nova Scotia High School Hockey Championship. An excellent goalie, Dave attended and played hockey for Dalhousie University and the University of British Columbia after graduating from KCS. His strong play earned him a string of conference All-Star Awards. After university, he went on to play professional hockey for four years in the Netherlands. Dave's career in hockey did not end when he stopped playing. He worked in a variety of coaching and executive positions from 1975 to 1994 for a number of hockey organizations including the NHL's Edmonton Oilers and the WHL's Victoria Cougars. In addition, from 1984 to 1987, he worked with Sport Canada and helped five national teams prepare for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. In 1994, Dave became President of the AHL. Under his guidance, the league became the primary development league for the teams of the National Hockey League. He also led the effort to expand the AHL by nine teams in 2001. With all the players, coaches, executives and broadcasters who get their start in the AHL, it is no wonder that Dave is considered one of the most influential people in hockey today. Dave has been a marketing and publicity mastermind in promoting the league. AHL attendance figures have soared with over 6 million tickets sold each season since 2001. He has also developed significant corporate partnerships to ensure the AHL's continued success in the future. He promotes the games on TV, cable networks, satellite radio and online streaming video. One of his most popular moves was to bring back the AHL All-Star Classic in 1995. He also has arranged for outdoor games and for special matches of AHL teams with prominent European teams. Over his long career in hockey, Dave's excellence has been recognized on a number of occasions. He has been inducted into the British Columbia Hockey Hall of Fame and the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame. He received the James C. Hendy Memorial Award in 1990 as an outstanding executive in the AHL. In 2010, he received the NHL's Lester Patrick Trophy for his outstanding service to hockey.

With his wife Marlene, Dave has three children and four grandchildren. His son Brad (1998-2000) also attended KES and followed in Dave's footsteps by playing hockey. Brad even served as a hockey coach for KES while attending university. Although living in the US, Dave continues to maintain his roots in Nova Scotia by spending his summers in a home near Smith's Cove. He plans to retire there at the end of his career.

024-025 224197-1.indd 25 11/1/2016 10:22:34 AM Marjorie Fountain - A Consummate Philanthropist By Heather Strickey, Director of Advancement

I had the privilege of meeting one of our oldest Alumna of the School in May, Marjorie (Manning) Fountain. She attended Edgehill from 1935-1938 and had just celebrated her 95th birthday in March. I learned so much during my time with Marjorie. Sadly, Marjorie left this mortal plane in July and is mourned by all who knew her. Marjorie came to Edgehill because her best friend, Audrey Hopgood (1935-1938), was coming. Marjorie described her friend Audrey as a bit of a "scamp." Audrey had her fair share of "black marks" from the Edgehill mistresses and Marjorie tried to counsel her friend and Audrey would say, "I am going to get blamed if something happens so I might as well be the one who did it." Marjorie reflected that Audrey might've been right. A highlight for Marjorie was being one of the 100 girls and 100 boys chosen to represent Canada at the crowning of King George VI in 1937. Her Edgehill friend, Ainslie Cole (1935-1939), accompanied Marjorie. The girls spent three weeks at the Roedean School which then solidified the friendship between the two schools which would see Rodean girls attending Edgehill during the WWII.

After Marjorie graduated from Edgehill School for Girls, she attended Dalhousie University and the Shaw Business School in Toronto. During WWII, she was secretary to the District Army Examiner, Halifax, and drove an ambulance for the Red Cross. In later years, Marjorie served on the Senate of Acadia University, Edgehill School Board of Governors, the Board of Eastern King's Memorial Hospital and the Provincial Council of Girl Guides. Marjorie attended the First Baptist Church, Halifax, and was a member of the Women's Inter- Church Council, APSEA School Auxiliary, Local Council of Women, Halifax Ladies' Music Club, Christian Women's Club and the St. Margaret Sailing Club. She was a life member of Alpha Gamma Delta International, NS Heritage Trust, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Joshua Slocum Society, Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust, and the Provincial and Dominion United Baptist Women's Missionary Union. Together with her mother, Marjorie established the Manning Memorial Chapel at Acadia University in memory of her father, Fred C. Manning. She and her husband, Sheldon, established the Gladys M. Manning Memorial Home in Windsor in memory of her mother. Marjorie established the Sheldon L. Fountain Learning Commons at Acadia in memory of her husband, Sheldon L. Fountain. She was a leading supporter of the IWK Health Centre, the QEII Hospital, Acadia and Dalhousie Universities, King's-Edgehill School and Dublin School in New Hampshire. She also made major contributions to the Canadian Red Cross, Pier 21, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Neptune Theatre and Symphony Nova Scotia. Along with her husband Sheldon, she received Honourary Degrees from Acadia (1999) and Dalhousie (2005) Universities.

Three generations of Marjorie's family have attended our School. Marjorie and her daughter Eileen attended Edgehill, Marjorie's son, Fred, attended KCS, and Olivia (Eileen's daughter) and Katharine (Fred's daughter) attended KES. In fact, I had the great pleasure of teaching Katharine Grade 10 Honours History. Marjorie and Sheldon Fountain were amazing philanthropists. In fact, our beautiful theatre is named the Fountain Performing Arts Centre because of the generosity of the Fountain family. Marjorie and Sheldon's children; Fred, Eileen, and David, have followed in their parents' footsteps by becoming some of the most generous philanthropists in the Maritimes. I am disappointed that I didn't get chance to meet with Marjorie again. She was such a gracious and humourous host. I know that there were so many more stories she could have told. Marjorie Fountain will be missed greatly by all of those who had the privilege of knowing her. Marjorie with her son Fred (1962-66) and granddaughter Katharine (2006-09).

The world became a less interesting place when Margaret Vair McLellan passed away. She was a clever yet fun-loving woman. She had a beautiful way with words and if you were lucky enough to receive a letter from this quirky woman, you were guaranteed a few moments of great entertainment! Margaret was predeceased by her beloved husband, Keith. Margaret didn't attend our School; however, the love of her life did, H. Keith McLellan (1937-1940). If you walk around the KES campus, you will be struck by the number of times the McLellan name appears. The McLellan Annex of the Stanfield Dining Hall, McLellan House, Margaret Vair McLellan House, the Margaret Vair McLellan Junior School, the Margaret Vair McLellan Concert Hall are just a few of the buildings that act as reminders of Margaret's generous spirit. Margaret was a philanthropist who shunned publicity like the plague; so we have very few photos of Margaret as she would never agree to having her picture taken. Not only did Margaret donate over three million dollars in memory of her husband Keith to our School, she also served as an Honourary member of the Board of Governors to our School. Margaret's interest in our School was multi-faceted. We are so thankful that Margaret loved our School and we will miss everything that made her so unique.

Margaret VAIR-McLELLAN of Halifax/Middle Musquodoboit/ died on November 22, 2015 at Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital. Margaret was born on June 8, 1921 and was the daughter of the late J. Douglas and Claire (Strickland) Vair. She was predeceased by her husband Keith and brothers, Stewart Vair and Doctor Donald Vair.

A rare photo of Margaret taken at our 2004 Graduation/Closing Ceremonies. She did not like to have her photo taken.

On Friday, September 18th, we hosted the Annual Grade 12 Students, Grade 12 Parents, Alumni & Staff Dinner. The evening began with a gathering at Alexandria Hall for refreshments and great conversation. From there Emma Belliveau (2009-16) piped the adult guests to the Stanfield Hall/McLellan Annex to join the Grade 12 students for a delectable dinner. A special thanks is due to the students who spoke and performed at the Dinner. Head Girl Abigail Shearer (2010-16) and Head Boy Colin MacQuarrie (2011-16) spoke eloquently to the assembled guests. Abi Shearer boasted about having the most Alumni family members in attendance. Abi's parents Tim (1982-83) and Tina (1980-86) Shearer were in attendance with their two older children, Dylan (2004-05) and Laura (2001-03; 2004-06; staff 2012-14) with her baby daughter Lucy. Elaine (Yu-Hsiu) Cheng (2014-16) and Eric (Jing-Zong) Fang (2014-16) delighted us with traditional Taiwanese music. Kyle Wagner (2013-16), Patrick Walsh (2013-17), and Ella Jollymore (2013-18) engaged the crowd with two very polished pieces from their vast repertoire of songs. The evening continued for the adults with Signal Hill performing in the Ted Canavan Athletic Centre from 9:00 pm until midnight. A great evening!

Career Night by Aynsley Sasaki, School Counselor

The Grade 11 and 12 students had the opportunity to learn about a number of fascinating careers. The event operated on a model similar to "speed dating". Each student was assigned to a group and each group rotated through a circuit of 7 professionals. They had 7 minutes to hear all about that professional's career and the path he or she took to get there. It was fabulous to have such a diverse group of presenters come to meet with our students. Not only did our students find out more about careers they were familiar with, such as Nursing and Pharmacy, but they also had an opportunity to learn about careers that they may not have any experience with such as Event Planning and Actuarial Science. After the 7 circuits were completed, there was a reception that allowed students to mingle and chat more informally with our presenters. It was great to see so many of our students creating connections, networking, and engaging with our Alumni and Parents. We would like to say a huge thank you to the following presenters who volunteered their evening to share their expertise and experiences with our students: Brent Andrews (1992), Dr. Bob Baird (1953), Ken Dufour, Dom Fegan (2007), Dr. Alex Jurgens, Dr. Tannis Jurgens, Ally Kelly, Dawn Lowe, Joanna Rhodenizer, Ryan Sasaki, Dr. Belinda Seagram, Penny Taylor, Melanie Taljaard and Dr. Alex Jagot & Freya Ferguson Adrienne Wood (2002).

On May 27th, we hosted the Grade 12 and Alumni Dinner Anthony Archibald (1990-93) which was followed by the Cadet Ball. It was such a lovely evening. This event had been a casual affair the past few years; however, we decided to make it formal so that our guests could put on one elegant outfit and stay in it for the evening. We started the evening in Convocation Hall with Fede Cisneros (2007-12; Head Boy) acting as our MC for the evening. Fede introduced Anthony Archibald (1990-93) who encouraged our soon-to-be Alumni to make the most of their last days at KES and to keep in contact with the School once they graduate. We moved from Con Hall to the Stanfield Dining Hall/McLellan Annex where we enjoyed an amazing meal created by our Barb (Lynch) Ryan (1951-52) & Carson Lee talented catering crew, Chartwell's. We were entertained, for the last time, by Elaine Cheng (2014-16) and Eric Fang (2014-16), who played a medley of traditional Chinese music. Throughout the evening, the Grade 12 students received their Alumni Pins by some of our very dedicated Alumni. Giant thank-yous to Bob MacFarland (1946-50), Bob Baird (1951-52), Barbara Redden (1965- 67), Barbara Ryan (1951-52), Alexander Hood (1948-51) and John Traves (1977-79). And, thank-you to all of the Alumni who joined us for this event!

2016 marks the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Edgehill School for Girls. Over the Canada Day weekend, the Edgehill 125 Reunion took place with over forty Old Girls checking in to celebrate this historic milestone in the School's history. Women travelled from as far away as California, Arizona, Wisconsin and Cleveland. Others came from British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and . And, of course, Nova Scotia was very well-represented! Over the course of the weekend, our Edgehill Alumnae spent time reconnecting with friends and classmates sharing many memories, laughs and stories of years gone by. The schedule of events for the Reunion included group breakfasts and lunches, a School Information Session, a Celebration Dinner, an English Tea Party, Campus Tours, a Reunion Church Service, Windsor Museum Tours, and even a late night pajama party!

Heather Strickey, Director of Advancement said, "This is a very special year as we are celebrating a significant milestone in Edgehill's history. Along with the Reunion celebration, we have added a very special room, the Edgehill Tea Room, at King's-Edgehill, to commemorate the 125th anniversary and to celebrate the history and traditions of Edgehill."

Thank you to everyone who made the commitment to attend the Reunion. A special thanks also goes to our planning committee who spent countless hours designing events and activities that made for a sensational weekend. Special mention to Ann (Creighton) Day (1952-1955) and Neva (Eisner) Bruce (1950-1951) for their effort in creating the Edgehill Tea Room. The Tea Room is a warm and welcoming meeting place for any Old Girls who would like to stay connected to our School community and to each other. Anytime you find yourself in the Windsor area and are longing for a stroll down memory lane, the Edgehill Tea Room is awaiting your arrival.

"You can't go back!" Well, this Summer I did! I went back to Edgehill Church School for Girls where I revisited other lives lived at earlier times. I'll be forever grateful, particularly on this day when I read the sad note from Joe Seagram telling us all that Edgehill had been struck by lightening and had burned beyond anything anyone could ever repair. How very sad! I'm so glad I took time out of the Edgehill 125th celebration to drive over to the old school. I parked and walked all the way round - back even to where the Kings' boys would call out from behind the back fence and where some Edgehill girls had challenged the rules and escaped briefly out the furnace room door. But let me start at the beginning. I drove up to Windsor from Cleveland, Ohio, to celebrate with other Old Girls, Edgehill's 125th year. We were not Pictures that Maria took during the Reunion weekend. at Edgehill but at King's-Edgehill because what was unheard of in the 40's, the amalgamation of Kings Collegiate School and Edgehill, had successfully taken place in 1976, 40 years ago, 26 years after I graduated! In my years, only unusual circumstances brought the schools together such as VE Day (May 8, 1945) which was celebrated with an enormous bonfire in the fields half way between the two schools. These fields are long gone now replaced by houses, as is the style over which I climbed each day to get to school. Back to the weekend and the "Old Days." Because I had gone back only to the Era of the 40's reunions, it never occurred to me that the culture might have changed ever so slightly between Headmistresses? I gathered from the many stories told during our wonderful meals together and the pajama party that many things relaxed a tad when one of my teachers, Miss O'Neill took up residence in the Headmistress's office from which Miss Briggs retired. The candy cupboard requirements relaxed; lights out hours were extended; boys weren't quite the forbidden fruit they had once been. I am so sorry Jean O'Neill was unable to join us at the Reunion. I missed seeing her. Among the activities planned by an impressive Alumni Relations group, headed by Heather Strickey, were field trips to the Haliburton and the Shand House Museums. I had never done that before and was puzzled as to why. Both were most interesting and so well-guided. The old fashioned tea party in Convocation Hall was extraordinary. How many of us had recently attended a tea party with full silver tea service (polished to perfection), delicate tea cups and saucers, small cakes and a wonderful group of "hatted" old Girls? How often had we done so in a building built in 1861, designated as a National Historic Site which at one time held a collection of books printed before 1501? Are they still on those well maintained shelves? It never occurred to me to look. Going back for me was truly an emotional experience. I mentioned multiple lives which I'll explain. I was an Edgehill day student for 4 1/2 years, when my father, Norval Waddington, was Headmaster of Kings. I became an Edgehill boarder for three years after my father retired as Headmaster. Believe me there is a big difference between the two! I lived in Alexandra Hall, so full of memories, where Joe Seagram and his family now live. How emotional it was to be greeted by Belinda and then taken through the house by Skyla who graciously took me up into my old bedroom which she now calls her own. Imagine that! Missing from the kitchen is the old ice box which continually dripped out onto the floor of the enclosed back porch and gone was the clothesline from which we hung sheets even in the heart of the winter. Surprisingly, the old clothesline reel is still there now deeply embedded in the trunk of the big tree out back.

What's that all about? Surely they could have held on as long as many of us have! Miraculous changes have taken place these past 66 years. The campus felt so familiar to me as I walked around but many things felt so different as well. The old dorm buildings I remembered were still there but a new floor was added to two of them. Handsome new administration and residence buildings now nestle among the old buildings, there's an Athletic complex (Ted Canavan Athletic Centre) and the Fountain Performing Arts Centre. More changes are on the way! During one lunch, Joe Seagram clearly spelled out plans for the future of the School. Challenges and some solutions have been identified and are being tackled by his Staff, Board, Inglis Education Foundation, and the Town of Windsor. It's impressive. Still reliably there are Convocation Hall and the Hensley Memorial Chapel where, during the Sunday service, we said familiar prayers together and sang familiar hymns which, needless to say, brought tears. I sat in that back pew more Sunday evenings that I can count seeing, up front, my father on the left and Rev. Rudderham on the right and all the boys spread out in the pews ahead. Still there, thank goodness, are those beautiful fields spreading out in front of the School sloping away toward College Road. I could feel myself back there walking between the buildings, playing field hockey on the King's Field, playing Kick the Can at the Lower School, eating every meal in the dining room, catching salamanders from the College Pond and carrying notes back and forth between the schools until I was caught! You can go back! Just let your mind and body relax and take it all in and stay away from any mirrors. I did and I'm so grateful to Heather Strickey, her Team, and Joe Seagram for planning this even from collecting and displaying the all important familiar photographs to making it such a wonderful experience. Also, thank you to the Old Girls who came back and renewed so many memories.

On a very sad note, Edgehill was struck by lightning on the afternoon of September 1, 2016 during a brief thunderstorm, The older 'middle' section was not saved. The red roofed building to the left was saved as well as the newer brick apartment building known as Edgehill Manor. Fortunately, everyone was evacuated safely.

Last year, we sent out a plea to help furnish our Edgehill Tea Room and so many of you responded with beautiful items and monetary gifts. In light of the tragedy of the Edgehill fire in September, our Edgehill Tea Room has become even more special. Thank-you to those of you who have made it such a special place. If you have something you wish to gift to the Tea Room, please let us know.

Thank you to Brian Taylor ([email protected]) for this photo.

Last year, we decided to have a "theme" for our magazine. Our first theme was the "Food and Drink" issue and this year's theme is "Health and Wellness." We are so fortunate to have a plethora of Alumni in this broad field of "Health and Wellness." Found within the next few pages are stories of Alumni who work in the fitness industry and the health field. I hope you enjoy reading about our motivational Alumni. My wish for you, borrowing the famous words of Mr. Spock, is that you and your family, "Live Long and Prosper." by Heather Strickey

Meet Jill Payne: Spiritual Athlete

It was somewhat surreal sitting down with Jill Payne (1996-2002) this past July. We were two women meeting and having coffee; however, part of me still sees Jill as the teen I taught History and coached in Basketball. Basketball was not the only sport in which Jill excelled. In Jill's Grade 12 year alone, she was awarded the prestigious titles of Scholar/Athlete and Senior Athlete of the Year for her outstanding skills and contribution to Soccer as Captain of the team, to Basketball as Captain of the team, to Track and Field as the Provincial Champion in the Javelin and to Rugby where she scored nearly 100 points herself on her first attempt at this sport. After high school, Jill went to the Canada Games as a paddler and played Rugby at St. FX (where she was named Rookie of the Year). This warrior athlete went on to play Rugby at the National and International levels.

Jill studied at St. FX initially and later was granted her master's degree in Exercise Science at the University of Victoria. Jill also completed a teaching degree and taught for a while. However, it was when she visited Costa Rica and fell in love with the land and the surfing, she decided to change things up. She took a job as the Director of Academics at an independent school on the beach in Costa Rica. The man who owned the School also owned some fitness centres throughout Costa Rica and soon Jill and he were business partners. There was an empty "rancho" (building with no walls) near Jill's school and Jill started using it to teach a fitness class. Her partner located some exercise equipment (very minimal) and soon her one class turned into many group classes and personal training. Jill quickly focused full time on her fitness work.

Jill's plate runneth over. She trains some very well-known celebrities (check out her Under Armour ad with Gisele Bundchen), she travels spreading her fitness message, she runs group fitness classes, she is in negotiations with Under Armour, and she designs programmes for the app, "Energi Coach" used by executives in Fortune 500 companies to add movement into their hectic lives. Some of Jill's most rewarding moments in this field have come from seeing clients experience the shift in how they view themselves and their bodies. Jill's mantra is to be a "Spiritual Athlete". Her website, https://spiritualathlete.life/, focuses on "intentional movement" by improving focus, relieving stress, and increasing energy. The fitness industry thrives on promoting our insecurities. Jill's approach is based on working toward feeling the way you want to feel and not focusing on losing pounds and building 6 packs. The focus is on creating more energy as having more energy will change your life and will allow you to accomplish your other goals. Jill travels throughout North America hosting her spiritual athlete workshops. She was in Victoria, Vancouver, and Calgary this fall!

I asked Jill if she had any piece of advice to share and her immediate reply was, "Find things that increase your energy and then let these things determine your path." What wise words from the woman who epitomizes the phrase, Spiritual Athlete.

038-039 224197-1.indd 38 11/1/2016 10:21:42 AM Alumni - Health & Wellness Alumni - Health & Wellness Elizabeth McMichael: Making our world a better place one seed at a time by Heather Strickey, Director of Advancement My first contact with Elizabeth McMichael (1950-1953) was through email. This lovely "Old Girl" was always one of the first to respond to my Alumni updates. Soon, it felt like I had this amazing friend in Cornwallis Park, NS, but strangely, I had no idea what she looked like! Then, it happened, I finally met the woman behind the messages. We were hosting the Edgehill 125 Reunion this past July and Elizabeth jumped in with both feet. She joined the Planning Committee and was invaluable immediately. Need someone called? Elizabeth would do it. Need piano accompaniment for a song? Elizabeth was on it. (This shouldn't be a surprise. "Betty" won numerous piano competitions while she was at Edgehill.) The more time we spent together, the more I realized what a unique and entertaining "Old Girl" we had in our midst.

Elizabeth has a remarkable way of living life for a 76 year old. She has been involved in the YMCA/YWCA in some capacity since 1967. Currently, she sits on the Advisory Board of the

FUNDY YMCA, attends the swimming programmes, and volunteers with the Walk & Roll programme that was established to encourage walking for those with mobility issues. This wonder woman also works with the YMCA assisting in some of the youth programmes. Elizabeth assists at their day camps when she can and runs the Green Thumbs programme.

As you can see, Elizabeth has a passion for the programmes offered by the YMCA; however, this is not the only volunteer group she assists. One of Elizabeth's greatest contributions to her current community of Cornwallis Park is her establishment of the Cornwallis Community Gardens Association (CCGA). Elizabeth spends countless hours designing the gardens, weeding, watering, planting, harvesting, and enticing volunteers to help her with her mission. The mission is to engage as many youth and seniors in the garden as possible. Currently, there are 32 garden beds for hire and an orchard. Through Elizabeth's leadership, the Cornwallis Community Gardens have flourished. Over the past six years, the Association has received grants from all levels of government.

What led Elizabeth to her mission of bringing community gardening to her small community in Cornwallis? The answer is simple. "My fear was that once this generation is gone, there would be no one to teach kids how to garden. We need to give them hands-on experience in a real garden." Elizabeth's efforts on the behalf of her community have been recognized. In 2013, she was an Annapolis County "Volunteer of the Year" and again in 2016. In 2014, she was presented with one of three annual provincial awards. That Elizabeth has taken such an active role in her community does not surprise me. After all, she has been a "winner" her whole life. Whether it's "tickling the ivories," becoming Nova Scotia's first women's high school gymnastics champion, running Cornwallis' community gardens, or "walking and rolling" with the YMCA, Elizabeth lives life to the fullest.

Meet Dr. Karen (Price) Mann (1948-58): Medical Education Trainer

I was an Edgehill 'lifer'- I attended the School from ages 5- 15, in what would be Grades 2-11. While I was a day girl, I always loved the periods of boarding which happened every year, when my parents travelled or for other reasons. The friends made at Edgehill remain among my closest friends today. Along with several classmates, I left the School after Grade 11 and went to Dalhousie University where I entered a Bachelor of Nursing Science programme. The programme was a 'sandwich' programme: it was six years long, involving two years of Science, followed by three years of nursing training in a hospital, and a sixth year, which was a university Diploma in Teaching in Nursing. Reflecting on that programme, I think its structure, which combined academic and practical education, laid the basis for how my life and work unfolded. The first few years after graduation involved marriage and raising a young family of three, along with working as an instructor at Dalhousie School of Nursing. I had opportunities to teach in classroom, community and hospital settings, combining my love of both nursing and teaching. Increasingly, I felt the desire to learn more, and when my youngest child was 4, I began graduate studies, and over the next 10 years, completed a Master's degree in Health Education and a PhD in Education. The decision to undertake graduate study was perhaps the most important decision ever! Upon completion of my PhD in 1986, I was offered a position in Dalhousie's Faculty of Medicine, working in medical education. That appointment began 30 years of exciting, challenging and rewarding work, teaching, conducting research and working in curriculum development and implementation with medical students, and in postgraduate and continuing medical education. I learned so much, worked with so many wonderful people, nationally and internationally, and enjoyed the work immensely. And in fact, I still enjoy it. Although I've 'retired' I now work a few days a week at the university and on various other projects. Life is full in many wonderful ways. My husband and I have nine delightful grandchildren, and times with our family are much cherished! I had the great fortune of taking piano lessons and choral singing during all my Edgehill years, and for the last 10 years I have returned to both piano lessons and accompanying a choir. It's wonderful to be a student again and music is a very central part of my life. Importantly, I'm very privileged to have been able to stay in touch with the School and have been involved with King's-Edgehill as a Board member for many years. Recently I'm been honoured to serve as the Chair of the Inglis Education Foundation, the mission of which is to support the School in its goal of providing superb education for many young people. I marvel at the wonderful opportunities that the School provides its students. These experiences will provide a wonderful basis from which their life paths and opportunities to contribute will unfold.

Meet Dr. Adrienne Wood (2001-02): Naturopathic Medicine

I started at Carleton University studying Biochemistry and graduated with a Bachelor of Medical Sciences from The University of Western Ontario. From there I worked at a private boarding school in Ontario teaching Outdoor Education, then moved to Germany for a year. After this I began my postgraduate degree at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in Vancouver, BC. I graduated in 2013 with a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine. I was lucky enough to squeeze in a fair amount of traveling between my endeavors and consider this instrumental in shaping my choices and led me where I am today. I always wanted to have a career in medicine and, while living in Germany, I was exposed to herbal medicine and homeopathy; their doctors are trained in both western and natural medicine. It inspired me to pursue this in Canada. I am practicing Naturopathic Medicine in my hometown of Windsor. Naturopathic Doctors are medically trained, naturally focused; we play a role in preventative health and getting to the root cause of disease. I have my own busy practice and feel lucky to help others navigate their paths to health. When I am not seeing patients in my office, I am teaching, hosting healthy cooking classes and retreats. I am also actively involved in the Town of Windsor. Individual wellbeing and a healthy community are inextricably linked; I plan to keep contributing to both in Windsor. In the future I would love to become even more involved in the town and continue growing my practice. For the KES students: I would encourage them to figure out what brings them joy in this world. Ask questions, try new things, think outside the box, and bring awareness to what fills their heart and soul with happiness and passion. Then find a way to do this every day! We really do create our own experience in this life, and the biggest part of this is discovering what you want to create!

Meet Marg (Kimball) LaFave (2000-03): CrossFit Trainer & Gym Owner

After leaving KES, I briefly attended Acadia University where I was enrolled in the Bachelor of Business program. After two years, I decided that I wanted to pursue my desire of working in the Fashion Industry and moved to Toronto where I studied Fashion Marketing at the International Academy of Design. After receiving my diploma, I worked for Gucci America for three years as an Executive Assistant to the President of Gucci Canada and Director of the North East USA. I then moved to the Hudson's Bay Company to work as the Executive Assistant to Bonnie Brooks, President of the company at the time. After years of working in the Fashion Industry, I found myself questioning what I wanted out of my life. My boyfriend, now husband Matthew, had been doing CrossFit, a fitness program that is designed to promote and prolong health and wellness at any age, for many years and was opening a CrossFit gym in Toronto. He asked me to please give it a try, I did and I was hooked. After a life-changing experience with CrossFit, I quickly decided I needed to learn all that I could about it so that I could help share my experience with others. I quit my job, got my CrossFit Level 1 Certificate and began coaching people in the gym. I found that I was passionate about helping people find personal happiness, and I set out to make that my purpose. Today I own my own CrossFit Gym in Mississauga Ontario called CrossFit M3, named after my 2.5-year-old son (Maximus) my husband (Matthew) and myself (Margaret). It is a family-operated gym, which both my brothers Tom (1999-01) and Joe (1999-03) are a part of. I have the pleasure of meeting and interacting with all kinds of different people every day. We help motivate them to use fitness as a tool to find confidence and happiness. I have seen so many people's lives change in the gym because they are surrounded by like-minded people who are using health and wellness as a way to a new life, both mentally and physically. I can't tell you how much satisfaction I derive from the thanks I receive from people whose lives have changed as a result of coming to our gym. It is my fuel to keep going. My focus on the future is to continue to grow my business and to touch as many lives as we can with CrossFit. My advice to KES students would be to listen to your inner self when making decisions about your future. There is definitely a voice inside of you that knows the right path you should take. Sometimes it's not always clear but, if you allow it to, it can help guide you. Don't settle into anything in life and feel like you a stuck there, you can make anything of yourself as long as you are willing to take the risks to change when necessary. Be fearless and life will be exactly what you want it to be.

Meet Jillian Murphy (2007-13): Track & Field Runner & Future Nurse

After graduating from King's-Edgehill School in 2013, the following September I moved to Antigonish to begin studying at Saint Francis Xavier University in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programme. My first year I lived on campus and joined the Track and Field team. I spent the year studying, socializing and running and met lots of new friends. Throughout my degree, I have been unsure of what I wanted to do for a career. It has taken a lot of support and encouragement from my friends and family in order to stick with my degree. However in my third year, I had the opportunity to work in obstetrics nursing which I absolutely loved. I am currently in my fourth and final year of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I am still running on the Track and Field team and living off campus. This coming May I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After graduation I'm planning to move in with a best friend I made at KES, and I am hoping to find a job nursing in the field of obstetrics. My advice for KES students is to enjoy your time at the School, go to every event and get together that you can. I made friends in the Junior School who I continue to keep in touch with all over the world and consider life-long friends. The students of King's-Edgehill are lucky to be a part of such a tight-knit community, and I am very thankful for the relationships I made during my time there.

After leaving KES, I attended STFX where I played on the Varsity Rugby Team and won a National Championship. Sports have been my passion for as long as I can remember, so when I discovered there was a degree I could take in University that would focus on exercise and sport I figured that would lead me to a successful future. After graduating, I followed my parents down to the Sarasota/ Bradenton area of Florida on the Gulf Coast. I learned I am passionate about helping and teaching people so I became a certified personal trainer. I spent almost 9 years at University Park Country Club as the Fitness Manager and Personal Trainer. In addition to overseeing the day to day operations of the Fitness Centre, I also ran the group fitness programme, and designed monthly health challenges for our members. Most of my days were spent helping sedentary individuals become more active, teaching golfers how to activate the proper muscles to gain more yards in their drive, or helping Parkinson's patients improve their strength and balance while delaying their disease progression. I have been blessed to change people's lives by improving their health and building personal relationships that will last a lifetime. The most important thing I would tell people who are trying to figure out what the want to with their lives is to do what makes them happy. Find your passion, if you love what you do, your job will come easy and your life will be better for it. My husband and I recently decided to do just that and moved to Nashville with our two little boys. No, not to pursue a career in music but to be in a city that makes us happy where we can enjoy the outdoors and be more active. I have started working with a personal training company as an independent contractor and am enjoying growing my business in a new city. I believe that exercise can save lives and no matter where I am in the world, health and fitness will be a part of me for the rest of my life.

Meet Rachel Bedingfield (1994-97): Director of Parks and Recreation

Rachel Bedingfield (1994-97), Director of Parks and Recreation for the Town of Kentville, was selected by the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity as one of the 25 most influential women for 2015. Rachel is a co-chair for WomenActive NS (WANS). One of the goals of the organization is to create more opportunities for women and young girls in sports. "We're looking at increasing participation at all levels in girls in physical education and recreational activity," she said. "We want to empower them with the idea of taking on leadership roles across all of those sectors." "We are also working regularly with provincial sports organizations in the field and helping them to make sure there is fair and equitable access on their boards and more women in coaching and refereeing and leadership roles," she said. "We're just trying to create welcoming environments for women and girls."

042-043 224197-1.indd 42 11/1/2016 10:17:04 AM Meet Kathleen Crowell (2009-13): Acupuncturist

I was a student at KES for six years. Following my graduation from KES I applied to and was accepted as a student in the two year Acupuncture programme at the Canadian College of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine located in Bedford, Nova Scotia. To obtain the status of an Acupuncturist requires a minimum of two years of study or 2200 hours. As an acupuncturist, my goal is to help clients restore and maintain good health and prevent future illness. My special interest lies in the area of pain management. I first discovered the field of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine when I was in my late teens. I was injured in an automobile accident that caused constant pain and discomfort. Traditional therapies did not restore my ability to function in the manner previous to my accident. I heard, through various sources, about Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine and decided to investigate their therapies. It worked, and still works to help me manage my pain. Based on the excellent outcomes that I experienced, I wanted to share this wonderful therapy programme with others and decided I wanted a career as a holistic health care provider. Today, as a professional therapist in Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, I develop and provide pain management programmes to others. Seeing the relief on my client's faces when their illness and pain is relieved, gives me great personal satisfaction. As an acupuncturist, I do more than poke people with needles. I do therapies such as fire cupping, ear seeding, acupressure, tuina, health counselling, herbs, nutrition and diagnosing in traditional Chinese Medicine. My job involves developing a professional relationship with the client by listening, palpation and assessing their general constitution. My studies also included traditional Chinese Reflexology. Reflexology is the study of the different pressure points on the feet and hands in relation to other areas of the human body. I am currently enrolled in a Business Administration programme at NSCC and also working in my profession with other like-minded colleagues at Chamomile Wellness Center in West Chezzetcook. My future plans are to open a spa and wellness center in Nova Scotia. My advice to KES students: find a rewarding career; a field of study that you are passionate about. The world is continually changing. Your first career choice may not be what you may end up doing. Follow your path of interest and the world is waiting for you with all of its challenges and rewards. It is up to you to go and get it!!

Meet Dr. Gillian (Rowe) MacLean (1998-2002): Neonatologist Meet Rachel Bedingfield (1994-97): Director of Parks and Recreation I graduated from KES in 2002 and moved to Dublin to attend the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) medical school. I am so grateful to KES for the knowledge and confidence to apply and then attend RCSI, if it wasn't for KES I would not have known about RCSI. I completed a 6-year medical programme in Ireland and had the opportunity to travel around Europe. I graduated in 2008 and was accepted to begin my General Pediatrics residency training at the University of Ottawa in July of the same year. After 3 years in general pediatrics I started a three year fellowship in Neonatal Perinatal medicine also at the University of Ottawa. I am currently in my final year of fellowship. My training has been delayed due to maternity leaves, my husband and I have three amazing kids; Lachlan is 5, Cormac is 3.5 years and Maisie is 16 months. In May of 2017, my training will be finished and I plan on practicing as a Neonatologist, hopefully in the Ottawa area. Whenever I think about my time at KES I am overwhelmed with memories that fill my heart with happiness and laughter. I am so grateful for the experiences I had. My advice for current KES students is to follow your dreams; you are capable of achieving them.

Campbell (1988-91) - Board Our Annual Giving Campaign of 2015- 2016 continued to build on the previous year's Sean & Kelly Cheverie - Parent success. There were several suggested streams you could donate to: Susan Cole - Staff Heather (MacKinnon) Coll (1952-56) Enhancing Our Learning Spaces: $64,315 Susan (Jenkins) Cooper (1964-68) The Edgehill Tea Room: $7,066 Peter A. B. Covert (1963-65) The Scholarship Fund: $225,128 Thomas Cromwell (2001-05) Rev David Curry - Faculty Thank-you to everyone who contributed to our 2015-2016 campaign. The students of Marilyn Curry - Faculty King's-Edgehill School have so much to appreciate! Marshall Davidson - Staff L. Ann (Creighton) Day (1952-55) We are moving forward with our drive to make the KES classrooms and learning spaces Graham Day - Past Staff mindboggling. The focus of this year's Annual Giving Campaign will continue to be, Cindy A. (Swinamer) DeMont (1972-76) "Enhancing our Learning Spaces." Richard DeMont (1980-82) J. Gay (Thompson) Dennis (1949-53) Thank-you to those of you who have supported our campaign with loyalty and generosity. Alan Dick - Faculty For those of you who haven't, please consider making a gift to our School. There are Perry E. Dominey (1969-70) many students who have attended and do attend because of the munificence of others. Heather (Chittick) Dow (1952-55) You don't have to give a large gift to make a difference at King's-Edgehill School. If Mary-Ann Dufour - Faculty every KES parent made a commitment to give $10 a month that would be $36,000 to Ann (Saunderson) Ecclestone (1938-42) enhance our students' learning either through scholarships or classroom enhancements. Jacqueline (Wrixon) Eisner (1951-53) We have been blessed to have so many generous benefactors. The reality is that our most Kelly Evans - Parent generous patrons are aging. For instance, the Ted Canavan Athletic Centre was Rory Finlin (2000-03) generously sponsored by the late Ted Canavan, the late Elliot Spafford, and the vibrant Nancy Flanders - Friend David K. Wilson. And, several buildings on our campus were built because of the Shelly Fleckenstein - Parent largesse of the late Margaret McLellan. Chris Fleming - Parent Mollie (Fisher) Flemming (1971-73) We have an amazing School. We are blessed to have remarkable students, dedicated Angela Folker - Faculty teachers, inspiring coaches, and wonderful benefactors. However, the world we live in is Sandy A. Forsyth - Faculty not static. Educational institutions continue to improve. We must continue to improve. Marjorie (Manning) Fountain (1935-38) Tuition only covers operational expenses. The extras like new buildings and scholarships Robert Fraser (1973-78) Board are funded by generous patrons. Please consider a gift to our School. Every gift makes a Sharon Fraser - Parent difference. Edward Freeman-Attwood (1940-44)
