6 | SUMMER 2016 | Manitoba INSURANCE BROKER Index Introducing... IBAM’s NEW President

La Salle Insurance Services Ltd.

Q - Can you describe your previous work history and how those experiences helped you as a broker? A - Due to my interest in business courses in high school, I was selected out of several high school students for a summer term position as a secretary for the Fort Garry School Division. It was then that I learned that I enjoyed an office environment, and helping people when they asked for it or otherwise obviously needed it.

Q - How did you get involved in insurance? Describe La Salle Insurance Services Ltd. What is your current position? A - Twenty-three years ago, through a family friend, I learned about a receptionist type position available at a brokerage, and applied. I successfully obtained the position, and within a few months, I was enrolled in the Fundamentals of Insurance course. La Salle Insurance & Travel Services Ltd. has two locations, one located in the heart of Fort Richmond on Pembina Highway, and a second location on Main Street in La Salle, MB. Between the two sites, we have 14 staff and provide solutions for all P&C products, from Autopac to Commercial and Agricultural operations. My current position as Operations Manager (and soon to be partner), allows me to focus on our business operations, dealing with clients, and managing our staff, who are like family.

Q - What do you enjoy most about the industry? A - What I enjoy most about the business is dealing with people. Being able to provide solutions for customers is very gratifying. On the other side of that is the relationships you build with your insurance company providers and industry vendors. There is no better feeling than building and maintaining positive relationships with people.

Lorne Perry, President, Insurance Brokers Association of Canada

WFII provides a world-view

eople often mention to me that they hear a lot of international bodies they communicate with; the International the acronym WFII, however very few know what Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS), the Organization P it means and why it is important to the Insurance for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Brokers Association of Canada (IBAC) and brokers in the UN, UNESCO, the Financial Stability Board (FSB), the Canada. The letters stand for ‘World Federation of Insurance Global Federation of Insurers Association (GFIA), the Geneva Intermediaries;’ it is the global federation of national insurance Association, as a few examples. These bodies are involved to broker and agent trade groups from more than 80 countries one degree or another in discussing and establishing high-level around the world. Much like IBAC is the national federation principles touching on regulations for the insurance industry. for provincial/regional insurance broker associations, WFII’s Their activities have been especially pro-active and voluminous members are the IBACs of the world. The federation has since the financial crisis of 2008, as major blame was, rightly existed for about 15 years and represents the interests of or wrongly, placed on the insurance industry. Issues related to more than 400,000 intermediaries doing around 95% of all solvency of insurers, capital standards, treatment of customers, insurance placements. WFII represents the interests of agents regulating of intermediaries, and so on. and brokers both on the P&C side as well as the life and A membership in WFII allows intermediaries to speak with wealth management side; this is representative seeing most one voice on issues that affect their businesses around the intermediaries are present in both sectors around the world. world. Insurance regulations, when developed or amended, As a member of WFII, IBAC participates in the lobbying need to be fair and promote the integrity of the entire and advocacy efforts undertaken by WFII to the various market on a country-by-country basis. A domestic Canadian regulatory approach is vital instead of an imported one. WFII advocates for greater global liberalisation of trade in the insurance intermediation market; international trade agreements are continuously monitored to ensure this principle is communicated and considered. Multi-national placements are becoming more and more common for intermediaries where coverages cannot be found in only one country. WFII advocates that consistent rules and treatment be accorded to intermediaries by national governments when such insurance placements take place. Remuneration of intermediaries is another issue that WFII speaks to. Some jurisdictions allow only commissions for insurance placements, while others allow only fees; some allow a mix of both. There is a recognition that every jurisdiction and market is different when it comes to remuneration, and that a one size fits all global approach is not appropriate, nor warranted. Every jurisdiction must carefully examine what is appropriate for their market and not be influenced by activities in another market. WFII also advocates that in order for trust to exist in any insurance relationship/transaction, there must be a certain level of transparency and educational standard of competence that a customer is afforded from their insurance intermediary. International bodies that develop standards and principles impact Canadian brokers. Both our federal regulator and all provincial regulators examine these standards; and in many cases changes are made to provincial regulations in order to conform to these standards. It is for this reason that WFII is a much-needed group allowing for intermediaries to speak with one voice; one voice is a lot more effective than several all saying the same thing. Daniel, a native of La Broquerie, was 4th on the Pistons in scoring with 22 goals and 59 assists for 81 points in 60 games. (He added another 17 points in 16 playoff games.) In the regular season, Daniel only received 2 minutes in penalties over those 60 matches, which led to him receiving the Lorne Lyndon Trophy, given to a player demonstrating tremendous hockey ability and sportsmanship. Daniel played in nearly every game over his five seasons with the Pistons, totalling 298 games played – second all-time in the MJHL. He holds countless Steinbach Pistons team records. Our scholarship winner has spent many hours volunteering and taking university courses while balancing life as a hockey player. His goal is to continue to further his education while playing hockey at the collegiate level. Good luck with that goal, Daniel, and congratulations!

The science of drying is a process that was created to establish guidelines, regulate techniques, and provide validation and documentation on the drying process. Why is it important? When it comes to water damage, there’s nothing more important than making sure the job is done right the first time. Doing so relies on a cleanup company that is on the front line of training, technology and technique. SERVPRO is an industry leader in all three. The DryBook is a proprietary tool that:

x Manages industry drying requirements

x Provides real-time documentation on the drying process

x Validates that services are executed to standard

x Allows real-time updates through DryBook Mobile integration

  INSURANCE INDUSTRY BLOOD DRIVE

This blood donor drive gives Insurance Brokers the opportunity to Adopt a Clinic at the Winnipeg Blood Centre 777 William Ave, Monday to Saturday.

Adopting a Clinic would involve choosing a day that 777 William Ave is open and promoting blood donation on that day among colleagues, family members and clients. In return, promotional opportunities are available, including setting up a display, signage, donor giveaways and the opportunity to interact with donors.

Each month the Winnipeg Blood Centre needs to fill approximately 3900 appointments to meet the needs of patients in our region. Your assistance in bringing in blood donations can treat cancer patients, bring a car crash victim through surgery, even help a transplant patient’s new heart beat for the first time. Now that’s truly powerful.

x In 2016, about 100,000 new blood donors will be needed to meet the needs of Canadian patients who require blood transfusions. Provincially, 6000 new donors are needed to maintain patient demand in Winnipeg. x 1 in 2 Canadians will either need blood or know someone who will at some point in their lives. 1 in 2 people are eligible to donate, yet only 1 in 60 actually does.

“As President of IBAM, I am pleased to announce that the Insurance Brokers Association of Manitoba supports blood donations and the impact it has on the local community. Most people know someone who has needed blood and Adopting a clinic gives individuals an opportunity to give back. The Young Brokers Network and IBAM have been proud supporters and Partners of Canadian Blood Services for the past four years and I am looking forward to growing participation in this upcoming year.”
